Pet Friendly cottage, Nr Yelverton, West Devon, England - Quiet Location. Within Walking Distance Of Village Pub And Restauran

Hilly Field Barn is an old barn that has been converted to a very high standard at Berrator Cottage which is just outside Buckland Monachorum. It lies above the River Tavy and there are wonderful views of the valley from the garden. It is set above the owner's house about 40m away. However, shrubs form a natural hedge ensure privacy. The cottage is set out as an open plan living/eating/cooking area. The bedroom has a double bed with wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables and lamps and has an ensuite bathroom with bath and integrated shower, plus toilet and basin. The kitchen is equipped with a gas cooker, microwave oven, fridge, washing machine and it is well equipped with crockery and cutlery. There is a good sized garden for guests' personal use and gravelled area for parking outside the front door. The cottage is disabled friendly to the extent that wheelchair access is good and it is all on the level. There is a small 'boot' room housing the hot water/heating boiler to hang coats etc. Please ask about our short breaks which are available throughout the year. WIFI is now available in the cottage.

Directions to cottage: From A30. Leave at 2nd Okehampton exit on to the A386 signposted Plymouth/Tavistock. Continue on this road to Tavistock (about 30 mins), then to Yelverton. Just after roundabout take right turn to Crapstone. Cross cattle grid to T junc. Turn Right. Cross 2nd cattle grid just B4 Crapstone. Go through the village towards Buckland Monachorum and pass the Garden House. Continue down hill, but DO NOT turn into village. Continue straight on through speed deregulation signs and then take 1st turn to the Right,opposite Wildside Nursery . Go down the hill, along the bottom and up the other side. Do not leave the lane until you see a pair of tan coloured gates on your left marked Berrator Cottage, Hilly Field Barn. And there you are. If coming via the A38, leave that road at exit for Derriford Hospital and Tavistock onto the A 386. Stay on this road until just before the roundabout at Yelverton where you turn Left and follow directions as above.

About Mrs J Greenway

I live in Devon with my husband and 2 sons nearby. We both came from here originally and we have horses,dogs, and a few chickens. We are both retired now. The cottage is a converted barn set near the house but not intrusive. We like dogs that are well behaved and the cottage is self contained with off lane parking.

Why Mrs J Greenway chose Yelverton

We bought Berrator cottage which is a selection of converted farm buildings and Hilly Field Barn was just that, but on its own and even had its own entrance, so converting it to holiday accommodation was very easy.

It is compact without being too small.

What makes this barn unique

The cottage is 10 mins walk from the moor and 15 down to the River Tavy. There are many walks locally, and at least 2 good eating pubs within a couple of miles, one of which is on 3/4 mile away and is walkable, namely the Drake Manor at Buckland Monachorum. Hilly Field Barn's location is such that it is not quite on the moor, but near enough to everything and yet be off the beaten track. It is very close to the River Tamar and Cornwall, making day trips there much more appealing.

A quiet & peaceful place to stay. Everything one could need for get away from the 'rat race'. Cottage warm and welcoming during 'monsoon' season

Notes on accommodation: This is a NON smoking property. We can take very small children or one older child. However, it is ideally suited to 2 people. All the doorways will take a wheelchair. We like dogs but prefer that they are well behaved and preferably not more than 2. The cottage has central heating . Outside: Outside the cottage is the parking area which is gravel and there is also a wooden table and benches for outside eating. A BBQ can be provided on request. There are 2 sun loungers in the 'utility' room in the cottage. Beyond the parking area is a lawned area with some shrubs and plants. It does look down on to the owner's house, but generally, it is quite private. Utility Room: This is where the boiler is for the water and heating. It has a row of hooks for coats etc and outside recliners and vacuum cleaner etc are housed there. Very suitable for drying off wet items of clothing and boots. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen, towels and kitchen towels are included. The property is cleaned on changeover day as is bed linen and towels etc. Should guests request a change of anything, this can be supplied. Example: if people are staying for 2 weeks.

Hilly FIeld barn is an idlic place to stay, where you can unwind and get away from the rat race. The barn is set in beautiful surroundings. The garden is nice and private. It is very well equipped and offers very comfortable accommodation. Jenny, the owner is lovely and very helpful and made us feel very welcome. Highly recommended.

Lovely place for a short break. Very relaxing.

Welcomed by Jenny and Brian and one of their delightful dogs. Well-equipped. Small but exactly as described. Couldn't fault it. Enough room for us and our Labrador.

Narrow road to property - just keep fingers crossed nothing coming in opposite direction!

Walking distance to the moor. Beautiful.

Walking distance to pub. Lovely food and dog-friendly. Essential for us.

All in all, a lovely time was had by all three of us.

Great location, as above , you walk in and feel comfortable straight away, nice people who own cottage and villagers very welcoming, Drake Manor pub just right.

One negative, internet not good, but we can all live without that.

Beautiful Place

It was a wonderful cottage close to Dartmoor. Everything was perfect. The host was very accommodating. As an added bonus, there was a little bird at the window every morning to greet me. I'm not sure how they arranged that. Kidding. I had a great time.

Just simply perfect.

Great location, quiet, and very peaceful.

Everything you need is here, fully equipped kitchen, internet, good quality fixtures. well maintained and very clean.

Perfectly located for the Moors and Sea, but far enough away from the crowds.

Mrs Greenway is an utter delight.

The north coast beaches are about 1 - 2 hours away depending on where you go. There is Widemouth, Watergate Bay, Newquay all within the times above.

On the south coast there is Wembury (50 mins), Kingsand, Cawsand, (1 hr)

The better surfing is on the north Cornish coast.


Airports: Newquay (60), Exeter (50). Train: Plymouth. Car essential for this cottage. Directions: From Yelverton. Take turn to Crapstone. x cattle grid. Turn R at T junc. x cattle grid. Go thru Crapstone to Buckland Monachorum. Don't go into viallage. go thru speed dereg. signs then take 1st R turn opposite Wildside Nursery. Go down hill, along bottom, up other side. Do not turn off at all till you come toset of tan coloured gates, marked Berrator Cottage; Hilly Field Barn. You are there.


The nearest village, Buckland Monachorum is 3/4 mile. Yelverton is 3 miles. Tavistock and Plymouth are both 10 miles. Village shop at Crapstone is 1 1/2 miles.

Further Details:

The nearest local shop is in Crapstone (1 1/2 miles). It is good and quite competitive and cash can be obtained in opening hours. Nearest ATM is in Yelverton (3 miles). Nearest Bank is Tavistock. Yelverton has a supermarket, butcher, chemist, hairdressers, garage and petrol and Real Estate Agents.

There are several National Trust properties in the area and some stunning gardens which are open to the public - The Garden House being the nearest. The Tamar river and valley are quite close and much has been done to encourage people to cycle, tree surf and walk and ride in the Devon Great Consuls Mines which occupied most of the valley. Morwellham Quay near Gunnislake on the Tamar and it the site of the highest navigable port on the river. Much to commend for a visit. Mountain bike trails at Galton nearby too. The whole area is fantastic for walking with dogs.

Booking Notes:
Our booking procedure is that on payment of a 25% deposit the booking is confirmed with the balance due 6 weeks before arrival. The deposit is non returnable. Payment by cheque or direct into bank account is acceptable. Pets are very welcome if well behave and are charged at £15 per week per animal or percentage thereof.
Changeover Day:
Our preferred changeover day is Friday as this give clients a full weekend to take advantage of local events. Time of arrival is any time after 3 pm unless arranged beforehand. Time of departure is 10 am.

Notes on prices:
Short breaks are also available all year round and prices depend on the duration of the stay. For example: 3 nights = 65%, 4 nights=75%, 5 nights = 85%
Dogs are £20 per animal per week.
