We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Walnut Farm. Thanks to the McLeods for their hospitality. Our young ones have disappeared for long periods of time playing, leaving the older ones to enjoy the peace of the house. We hope to return next summer to this beautifully presented, spacious and well-equipped house. - July 2013

Spacious and quiet house

  • 5 of 5

We had a great long weekend stay at Walnut Farm. Even with a toddler, a baby, 8 adults and one mad spaniel there was enough room for everyone and plenty of stairgates were really useful! Big secure garden was brill for the dog, and it was just so nice to feel relaxed in a properly dog friendly house. The big kitchen was great too. It was a quiet location to have a hol in winter, I'm sure it would be equally peaceful at other times of the year. The house also stayed warm despite extremely stormy weather outside, which we were very grateful for! The sea is a short drive away (unfortunately there isn't a direct footpath across the fields) and miles of dog friendly beaches await.. at least in winter. Sea Palling was a lovely vast stretch of sand worth a visit for the beach and kite flying / kite chasing if you're a dog. In winter, at least, the shops and cafes there were pretty bleak though and it's worth taking a picnic or eating elsewhere, rather than planning to find something to eat there. We also loved seeing hundreds of seals at Horsey (we also found them on beaches nearer the house, with far less people around!). All in all a recommended house for a holiday, with a really welcoming and peaceful feel.

Owner's Response: SO pleased you enjoyed your holiday at Walnut Farm - it's just great for a family (and dog friendly!) holiday. And you found the seals close by too! Most people head for the busier beach further south along the coast but they can often be found much closer to the house - an amazing sight in the winter months and often during the rest of the year too. We very much appreciate you taking the time to do a review and hope to see you here again.

Lovely big house

  • 5 of 5

We stayed as as a party of 4 adults, 4 teens and 2 11 year olds.

The house is lovely and there was plenty of room for us all. Nice kitchen with everything you could need, kids enjoyed baking brownies and cakes.

Lovely beaches in surrounding area. We hired a boat for the day on the broads and had a great day out in Great Yarmouth. Loads to do on local area.

Great holiday had by all.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your 5 star review! Really pleased you enjoyed the house and the area - it really does have a lot of room for all the family to spread out or all get together. The Broads offer a lot of great opportunities for messing about on boats, wildlife watching and just sitting and watching the world go by from a waterside pub! Lots of family orientated things to do in Great Yarmouth and Norwich and then return to the peace and quiet of the house at the end of the day to relax! Hope to see you back here again. Sue

That Special touch

  • 4 of 5

Spent a long weekend at Walnut Farm with my family....7 adults, 2 teenagers and 2 very energetic spaniels. First class customer service from the owners pre and post holiday, and it was the extra special dog friendly touches at the house that stood out for us...I won't spoil it for others with the detail. Clean, spacious accommodation with everything you need. Location superb....close to beautiful beaches and within easy reach of Great Yarmouth and Norwich for any retail therapy. It's a shame to mention this but the wifi failed us, which with teenagers missed terribly but didn't detract from a great time. Would certainly recommend this property to anyone.

Quiet and relaxing home from home

  • 5 of 5

This house is very, very chilled and relaxing - dogs are very welcomed with throws for the sofas so it can be totally home from home. Wonderful sun room for the daytime with large windows and door to garden and then evenings in the lounge with the log burner on - logs are free and the fire lights in seconds - so easy.

Rooms are large with lots of room to spread out. So quiet at night - best nights sleep I have ever had.

Lovely dog walk around the farm just outside the gate - safe and well maintained and all you can hear are the skylarks - walk goes alongside the broads for a short way and past a handy cart for fresh eggs for breakfast when you get back.

Garden is mostly grass/shrubs with a gravel drive and once the gate is shut is dog proof - small dogs might be able to wiggle through the hedge in places though.

Cannot walk straight to the beach from the house (would be about a mile along the road) but a very short drive takes you to it with easy parking (£1.20 an hour) - we have an elderly dog so she cannot go too far.

If you want to chill out and take things easy then this is ideal - feels like home from home. Some holiday lets have so many rules you feel nervous especially with dogs - so nice to stay somewhere where dogs are truly welcomed not just tolerated and to be trusted that you will look after the house and respect it - lovely.

Sue is a wonderful person to deal with - we are looking forward to our next stay with East Ruston Cottages.

A fantastic week

  • 5 of 5

Two families stayed at Walnut Farmhouse for a week. The house is magnificent, very homely and so spacious with everything you could need. Wood burner was fantastic! The treats left by the owners were really appreciated. Very quiet area but we found plenty to do, a visit to see the seals highly recommended. Sea Palling was lovely even in the rain. We are looking forward to visiting again next year.

Location

Sea Palling
"Sea Palling is a small, coastal village in the Norfolk countryside. Amazingly for such a sm..."

From the Owner

We knew the house would be popular with famillies and dogs as it has an unbeatable location in a quiet, rural part of Norfolk, down a private track and minutes away from the beach. All the beaches along this coastline are sandy and dog friendly and easily accessible. We particularly love the seal colonies which breed along the coast and have spent many happy hours during the winter months watching the seal mothers with their pups. Like me, they are 'incomers' to this part of Norfolk and, like me, would never live anywhere else! A high proportion of our guests come here, fall in love with the area and move up. Think that says it all!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Norwich Airport at 33 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Sea Palling at 1.2 Kilometres Nearest Train : Worstead at 18 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Ingham Swan at 4.9 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Waxham at 1 Kilometres Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

No special interest holiday provided but the area is rich in wildlife and bird spotting opportunities, fantastic for photography and painting and the close proximity to both the sea and the Broads means that there plenty of locally available courses for sailing plus kayaking, fishing, boat hire and jet ski hire.

Coast/Beach:

The 2 nearest beaches to Walnut Farmhouse are located within a 5 minute car drive. Sea Palling is a blue flag beach with cafés, shop, toilets and amusements and lifeguards in attendance during peak season. In the other direction is Horsey Gap where there is a car park behind the sand dunes. Both are sandy, easy walking, very quiet and dog friendly. A short walk along the beach and you might well meet the local seals and during the winter months their pups. This beach is a top breeding colony and people come from miles around to view the seal pups in the winter.

Travel:

A car is pretty much essential for getting around in this part of rural Norfolk. There is a bus service to Sea Palling from Norwich. The nearest train stations are at Great Yarmouth and North Walsham. Local taxis operate.

Distances:

Local amenities are 5 minutes drive to Sea Palling where you will find village shop and post office, cafes and fish and chip shop and 2 pubs that both serve food. Nearest supermarket is 6 miles away in Stalham. Seaside resort of Great Yarmouth is 14 miles and Cromer is 23 miles away. Norwich City Centre is 23 miles away with all of its museums, shops and famous Castle. The Broads National Parks starts just a few miles from the house at Hickling and the small towns of Stalham is 5 miles away.

Further Details:

Walnut Farmhouse has an excellent location for exploring the best of the Norfolk Coast and Broads or a trip into the centre of Norwich. There are many local National Trust properties that you can visit. Great Yarmouth has something for everyone. The location is very peaceful but not isolated. Within a couple of miles there are cafes, pubs, a farm shop, very good butcher and just a little further afield you will find an excellent fishmonger at Happisburgh, a local food shops - Truly Local - which counts Prince Charles as a customer, more dog friendly pubs, bicycle hire, banks, takeaways, chemists, pet shops and more. Please do feel free to email Sue if there is anything you want to know about the area and what it has to offer.

The location is ideal for everything that you could want from a family holiday or a get together with friends. The choice is yours of how active or relaxing your holiday is.

There are facilities for fishing on the Waxham Cut (License required) or sea fishing trips can be booked locally.

Anyone interested in wildlife (watching or photography) will be spoilt for choice here. The coastline is used by colonies of seals for breeding and in the winter months 100s can be seen together with their pups. The flat marsh land and waterways provide a habitat for a huge amount of wildlife including Marsh Harriers and there are deer - Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer - in the area too.
