About Charlie Heckstall-Smith

I am an English Francophile, fluent in French having studied it at University and having lived and worked in France, albeit a long time ago. Meanwhile, I currently live in USA with my husband, 2 children and a golden retriever, but plan eventually - after over 20 years as an expat living in the Far East and now the US - to retire back in Europe.

Charlie Heckstall-Smith purchased this villa in 2010

Why Charlie Heckstall-Smith chose Draguignan region

My husband and I bought the property in Lorgues in 2010 with a longer-term view of spending much of the year there when we retire. Meanwhile, for the next few years, we have decided to let it out to holiday makers so that other people can also enjoy the house. We love our several visits each year, and look forward to spending more time at the house in the future.

As I used to spend many summer holidays down on the Côte D'Azur with French friends, I know the area well. We chose to buy in the rural setting of Lorgues, however, as it is away from the madding crowds, but within easy reach of the coast. We love the temperate climate, the local food and the region's rosé wine. It is the one place where we feel we can really relax.

What makes this villa unique

While sitting on the terrace of the villa, in a rural setting with total privacy, you will find it hard to believe how well-located it is! Just 6 km from the market town of Lorgues, the villa is only 15 minutes from the A8 motorway, 45 minutes from the TGV station in Aix-en-Provence, and also conveniently located within 1-1.5 hours from the airports at Nice, Marseille and Toulon/Hyères.

The villa is very well-equipped for rentals, so you don't feel that you are trespassing in someone else's home. You'll be able to make it your own home-away-from-home in no time at all for the length of your stay. Nestled in a little valley, out of sight from other houses, a feature of the villa is its magnificent private pool.

A little piece of heaven in the South of France

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this villas a group of 8 - 4 adults (parents) with 4 grown up children. VIlla Mauniers is a beautiful villa, well equipped for at least 8 (depending on the ages - we didn't use the top bunk but did use the sofa bed) in a pretty and quiet part of the countryside. Fabulous pool which we barely left, although the Gorge Du Verdun is well worth a day trip - can especially recommend the east end of the lake which was quiet even though it was peak season - with pedalos, paddle boards to hire and not much more - a small café for drinks and sandwiches but wonderfully peaceful. Lourges market is a must (although some of us missed it and bitterly regret it) and there are lovely walks around as well (a daily hour long walk ensured we felt less guilty drinking the beautiful local rose wine!) All in all I can't recommend this place enough.

Villa Mauniers

  • 5 of 5

This was probably the best Villa that we have ever stayed in. The quiet private setting with excellent facilities were superb.

There certainly was plenty of room to relax and chill either within the lovely interior or to sit around the pool and enjoy the garden and grounds.

The Pool was clean and well maintained.

The Villa truly felt like a tasteful home rather than another rental.

The location was ideal for the markets towns and a exploration.

The team the run and manage the Villa also just made it all so easy with no hassle.

As Good as it Gets

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I joined my son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren for a week combining fun activities and relaxation at and around Villa Mauniers, a lovely house near the river Argens in the beautiful and peaceful provencale countryside between Lorgues and Le Thoronet. The villa certainly lives up to, and even surpasses, its description on the comprehensive website.

This is an ideal place to relax and unwind, with its comfortable rooms, excellent facilities, sun terrace, barbecue area and large and beautiful swimming pool. It is also a great base for exploring the delights of the region - we particularly enjoyed our visits to the street market in Lorgues, the steep and winding streets and ancient buildings of Les Arcs, the magnificent views at the Gorges du Verdon and the Cascade and translucent green rock pools near Cotignac.

We could happily have eaten round the barbecue every evening, but there is certainly no shortage of excellent restaurants in the surrounding towns and villages.

We have no hesitation in recommending Villa Mauniers to anyone looking for the kind of location and experience described above, and we hope to return there ourselves at the first opportunity.
