About the Owner

Alan is a practical person who loves a challenge, so after many happy years of working and raising a family of three sons in West Dorset, he managed to persuade wife Sue that living in France would be an adventure. Having found a traditional stone barn in the pretty hamlet of Ydes-bourg in the beautiful Cantal four years of hard slog ensued. Alan gradually transformed the barn into two comfortable dwellings while Sue continued to live & work in the UK.

In 2012 everything was finally in place for Sue & Alan to make the big move to their new home in deepest France.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a lovely week at La Grange. The owners, Alan & Sue, were friendly, welcoming and happy to suggest places to visit. The Gite is an old converted barn with a well furnished, spacious, modern interior. There are good views of the surrounding countryside from the first floor living area. It is a convenient location for visiting most areas of the Auvergne. Locally good for walking and cycling."

This Gite has the Potential to be Excellent

  • 3 of 5

Location is superb.

Hosting:- would have appreciated more interaction from the lady of the house.

Ground floor:- Large welcoming entrance porch and excellent utility/ storage room.

Living area:- Kitchen superb, lounge comfortable and dining area pleasant.

Bedrooms:- storage units are budget range and most displeasing to use. Lean to inbuilt wardrobes cheap and disappointing.

Ambience:- regretfully spoilt by sleeping area, toilet seats will drive men to despair and ill fitting disfunctional shower facilities.

Value: - acceptable. Would be excellent if the above mentioned issues were rectified.

Appreciated the anti mosquito screens, walking maps and guidance from Alan.

Owner's Response: Hello Joanne and John Thank you so much for taking the time to submit a review. To address your comments: The published details clearly state that the bathroom has a bath with shower attachment and this is also shown on one of the accompanying photos. The bath and shower attachment are functioning perfectly. The bedside cabinets are the same as those we have ourselves and we consider the wardrobe area to be practical and spacious. The additional units provide extra storage space for larger families/groups. We appreciate that everyone has different perspectives on such things. French toilet seats & fittings are a bit hit and miss but we’ll investigate the problem (presumably that the seat doesn’t stay up?) as soon as our current guests leave. Our approach to interaction with guests is that we welcome them on arrival, provide whatever information is needed/ requested and point out that we are just next door should they require any help. We are very much aware that being in relatively close proximity could be intrusive and so we leave our guests to enjoy their holiday in privacy, while of course chatting when our paths cross during their stay. I (Sue) was out of the country when you arrived, very tired following my time away and aware that Alan had provided you with all the information you asked for, so I didn’t feel the need to further intrude on your time. I very much enjoyed being able to chat when you accepted our invitation to join us for an evening and I was sorry not to have been able to say goodbye on your leaving day, as you had already gone when I returned from the early morning dog walk. We’re glad that you enjoyed your extensive walks in our beautiful area and hope that your remaining travels and return home went smoothly. Sue & Alan

Lovely spacious gite in very peaceful surroundings

  • 4 of 5

We had a fabulous 2 week holiday, spent our days cycling the very hilly but beautiful quiet roads of Cantal. We would thoroughly recommend a holiday in this very unspoilt and peaceful area of France. Our hosts were very helpful giving us good advice on local places to visit, we will definitely return.

Fantastic week cycling and walking

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in this very spacious and comfortable house. The house is very well equipped including bike racks in the large downstairs utility room.

The area is peaceful and we enjoyed the sound of cow bells from adjoining fields. We had bikes with us and cycled everyday on beautiful scenic routes . The area is wonderful in this respect and caters for all levels from flat cycling on the old railway track to more challenging hills. There is also great local walking.

We drove to Puy Mary for the sunset one evening and also to Mont Dore and took the cable car up Puy de Sancy for a spectacular ridge walk.

We got fresh bread and croissants every day from Saignes. We made good use of the barbecue as the weather was hot and sunny all week but also enjoyed an excellent meal out in a rural restaurant recommended by the hosts.

Sue and Alan were very thoughtful and helpful hosts.

We hope to return!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your your very informative review. It was lovely to read this on a cold wet February morning and be taken back to that long hot summer! We very much enjoyed meeting you and would certainly be happy to welcome you again one day.. We hope that all is going well and that the younger members of the family aren't too bogged down in their studies. All the best Sue & Alan

Excellent Gite in perfect spot

  • 4 of 5

Our stay at the Grange was very satisfactory. The accommodation was comfortable, peaceful, immaculate and convenient. Sue and Alan Russell were friendly and welcoming, and provided useful local information. It was in an ideal location for our purpose, giving easy access to the many interesting places we wanted to visit. Nearby Saignes is the archetypal French village with a good range of shops.

It was a pleasure to meet you and we hope the rest of your travels went to plan. Apart from a very short, but very cold, snap in mid October the amazing weather has continued here so we're experiencing a beautiful golden autumn. We hope the weather in Scotland is treating you kindly. All the best - Sue & Alan

Exactly what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

The previous reviewer is dead right about this Gite. It's comfortable, clean, well-equipped and remarkably large. The setting is delightfully peaceful, a few minutes walk from the rest of Ydes Bourg which is a hamlet. All you see around you is lovely countryside and a few cows. We went for a week to do some walking and had brought a book of walks with us, but the Gite is well provided with maps, books and information about the area. Saignes is 5 minutes by car (good boulangerie for the morning croissants), and we recommend the ices in the Café de la Paix! We arrived by plane from Stansted to Clermont Ferrand - it's then an easy one-and-a- half hour drive through the countryside.

Alan and Sue are very friendly and helpful and if you want to get in their very good books, bring an English newspaper with you...

This is not a particularly touristy area - we only heard English spoken once in a restaurant, although on visiting Salers (much to be recommended) we found where the tourists go. There is plenty to do, but a car is essential, of course.

Loved this property, had plenty of space and the open plan format of the kitchen/dining/living room produced a light and airy space. There were only two of us but could easily take the maximum 6 people. The gite was also very well equipped with outdoor equipment such as sun beds and BBQ, Sue and Alan were very friendly without being intrusive and we did spend a few hours together over a drink one evening, good company. It was very hot for our week but we could swim in the lake above the dam, walk the old railway line, bike hire at Ydes old station and just enjoy a leisurely evening at the gite followed by an evening stroll to the sound of cow bells. Good supermarket at Ydes and restaurants and bars in Saignes (1km), highly walkable. Loved the Contal area, visited Salers and Puy Mary at 5700 feet but you will be pleased to note this can be done by car. Loved the local cheeses, St Nazaire, Saler, Bleu D'Auvergne. A really good holiday. I drove down over two days and collected my wife from Clermont Ferrand airport via Ryanair to make the most of her holiday from work, I am retired. Fly in to Clermont and hire a car, the gite is well equipped so you don't need much, visit a lovely area.

From the Owner

Any nature lover would be seduced by the beautiful unspoilt countryside of the Cantal; a land of green-cloaked extinct volcanoes, winding rivers, high plateaus and attractive Auvergnat villages with their distinctive architectural style. Spring and Autumn colours are wonderful, summers are hot, winters are cold! A superbly peaceful area where you feel that time moves more slowly and people are in touch with their surroundings.

The beach at Lac du Val is 15kms away

Bort les Orgues (9kms) has a good selection of  shops as well as a Carrefour Hypermarket, the town is dominated by les Orgues, a volcanic rock formation with spectacular panoramic views, as well as the large dam on the Dordogne. Saignes is situated 2kms from Ydes-Bourg & is a small market town with a good range of small shops & eating places as well as a 12th century chapel on a promontory dominating the town. Ydes is 3kms distant with a large SuperU, shops, banks, petrol & eating places.

Further Details:

The barn is situated on an old Roman road that ran from Rodez to Clermont, at the edge of the small hamlet of Ydes-Bourg (that itself has Gallo-Roman origins) surrounded by farmland and rolling hills. The village has an historic 12th century church & Commandery, built by the Knight Templars, & is located next to the slow flowing Sumene river – popular for trout fishing. The village is residential and has no shops although it is visited each day by a bread van, there are however shops, banks, post office, restaurants & a large Super U supermarket in the nearby town of  Ydes (5 mins drive). The historic small town of Saignes is also only 5 mins drive away & has a good range of small independent shops. The location is extremely tranquil, the predominant sound being the bells on the local Cantal cattle, and the surrounding roads see little traffic making them excellent for walking or cycling.

The surrounding area offers excellent cycling facilities, the roads being quiet, fairly level & there is also an extensive cycle track that follows the old railway line for over 18kms. Various watersport facilities & swimming are offered at the large lake to the north of Bort-les-Orgues. Near Riom-ès-Montagnes in the middle of the volcanic park is Scenoparc, a new theme park which traces the relationship between humans and animals in a 35 hectare setting which has barely changed since Neolithic times. Other sites to see include Chateau d’Anjony, a beautiful chateau with 16th century frescoes on the walls, the Garabit viaduct, a superb structure designed by Gustave Eiffel which spans the Truyère valley, and the Musée de la Resistance at Auvers.

From the Owner

A quiet 'away from it all' position with only a 5 min drive to the pretty village of Saignes or small town of Ydes for everyday shopping, and excellent quiet roads to everywhere else. Saignes can also be reached by footpath, a pleasant half hour walk. The gite is roomy, comfortable and well equipped for an enjoyable holiday. We're just next door should you need advice or experience any problems. This is beautiful walking and cycling country, with the added benefit of being within comfortable travelling distance (around 45mins) of the small ski resorts of Mont Dore and SuperBesse in the Winter. The down to earth and welcoming nature of the local people is the icing on the cake.
