About the Owner

With our youngest child leaving home for university we started looking for our holiday home. We found Casa La Higuera and straight away knew it was the house for us. In a few years time we hope to spend more time in Spain but in the meantime we are quite happy to rent it out to people looking for a quality villa, in a stunning area of Spain where the climate is fantastic.

Superb. Best we have stayed at

  • 5 of 5

I shouldn't be writing anything about this villa really because I want to keep it to myself, but I promised Alison that I would, so her goes. It really is a gem of a villa, in excellent order and better than described. It is ideally positioned within easy walking distance of Canillas and east driving distance of Competa. Peaceful and quiet with a great swimming pool, which is ideal for kids to splash around in. We can't wait to go back next year. Many, many thanks Alison

Six stars next year??

  • 5 of 5

From first to last our stay at La Higuera really was 5 star.

The lucky owner, Alison, was very helpful and made the whole booking process pain free. The property managers in Spain met us at a charming local restaurant/bar, of which more later, and left us at the villa confident that they would respond quickly if we needed them (we didn't!).

You will find the layout of the house and grounds flows nicely and because the garden does not need to be fenced for security the whole valley seems to be yours. We dare you to sit and with a glass of something facing the setting sun and not sigh one of those huge weight off your shoulders sighs.

It really is possible to stroll to the two very adequate minimarkets in Canillas in less than 10 minutes. Perfect for fresh breakfast bread and cakes. Close by is a lovely bar/restaurant called Cerezo. A different walking route takes you to the original meeting place Las Esprillas. A good 3 course menu del dia including a bottle of wine and beer was outstanding value at 30 euros for two inclusive of tip.

La Higuera is paradise if you need somewhere to chill and recharge and we left cursing ourselves for not booking a longer stay.

The great service continued on landing back in the UK as our breakages deposit was refunded within days.

Alison tells us that there are plans to improve the villa even more this winter so be prepared for the first 6 star review in 2017.

Perfect- look no further!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this property for 2 months (December/January) and loved every minute!

Firstly the location and positioning are amazing; a peaceful rural setting but very close (2-5 mins walk) from two beautiful villages with a couple of small but well-stocked supermarkets, several cafes and restaurants, bakery etc. A 15 minute walk the other way takes you into the larger village of Competa with a large choice of shops and eateries. All are lovely places to while away the time.

The views from the house and gardens are spectacular. Sitting out with a coffee in the mornings became our favourite time of day, watching the sunlight come up and turn the mountains to red and orange was breath-taking and we never bored of it.

The house itself is spotless, tastefully decorated and has everything you could possibly need for your stay, from the kitchen to the garden. There are plenty of books, DVDs and games and the English TV channels kept us in touch with the goings-on back home. The log-burner was well-used during our stay as it gets quite nippy once the sun goes down in the winter, but the house soon warmed up and we were very cosy and comfortable. The beds are comfortable and mattresses seem new. We used the annexe for visiting family and it was equally comfortable and well-appointed.

You won’t get better than this property- we can’t recommend it enough for everything from short breaks to longer stays, for young and old, families and singles and everyone in between! Look no further!

Thanks Alison & Nick!

Peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have just returned from an excellent holiday at Casa La Higuera

On arrival we were met by a very friendly couple who showed us around the villa. The villa was well furnished inside and outside. There was good sized covered area for dining and sitting. Although we did not use the cooking facilities there appeared to be everything you would need.

There was a good sized swimming pool with a cover to retain the heat. We were surprised to find that the pool was warm enough for us to swim every day.

The villa is located in a wonderful position with views of the village and the mountains. A ten minute walk takes you to two of the restaurants and a supermarket in Canillas. We ate in both restaurants a number of times for lunch and dinner and had excellent food every time. We also had some excellent food in the bar at the top of the village.

We were able to walk to Competa easily in 25 mins using either the foot path or the road. Archez took us 15 mins but, as it is down hill all the way, it took a bit longer getting back.

We chose this villa for the peace and quiet we hoped it would offer and it's position near to a number of restaurants. The peace and quiet was wonderful and there were many restaurants to choose from in walking distance. It therefore provided us with a excellent relaxing holiday. We hope to return in the near future.

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely five days at Casa Higuera at the end of March despite chilly weather! It was a perfect base for our walking holiday, and close to the village for provisions. The walk over to Competa is lovely, and we typically walked there for the evening and got a taxi back, as Canillas was very quiet at this time of year. The meet and greet service worked perfectly, and we really enjoyed our stay. The villa is spotlessly clean, and extremely comfortable, with everything we needed. The wood burning stove was great for the chilly evenings and the outside seating areas are lovely, with views over the valley and towards to mountains to die for! We will definitely return!

Happy holiday at Casa Higuera

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at Casa Higuera. So relaxing and quiet. A lovely private villa with beautiful views over the valley and the sea in the distance. The house is a nice, comfortable family home although we hardly spent any time indoors - our days were spent sightseeing or lazing on the terrace which got the sun all day. There is plenty of shade as well if you prefer. The pool was lovely and benefited from a cover which kept the heat in. We walked into the village along the path which led from the back of the house through the avocado groves - a nice way to collect your freshly-baked and delicious breakfast bread. My no-carbs diet took a bit of a nosedive! We sampled most of the local restaurants - Antonio's (the nearest) doesn't look very glam but the food was delicious, the bar in the pretty main square of Canillas was very nice for lunch or a drink and the restaurant with the big terrace in the village overlooking the valley was good too. In Competa, anywhere in the square was nice for lunch and dinner at Oliver's rooftop terrace was very good and a bit different from the usual choice of food. Forgotten the name of the place where we had THE most amazing steaks, but it's in the visitors' book - beware, they are huge and very filling (we definitely shouldn't have had a starter) but unbelievably tasty and tender.

The Alhambra at Granada is amazing for a (longish) day out, beautiful scenery on the way and the Nerja caves were spectacular. Lake Vinuela is lovely too. There is lots of very good walking locally if that is your thing.

The meet and greet service worked perfectly. We texted when we left Malaga and the directions to the meeting place were easy to follow. Check it out on Google Street View so you know what you are looking for. The house was spotlessly clean and well-equipped.

If you want peace and quiet, a pool and lovely food within easy reach (either on foot in Canillas or by car to Competa), this is your place. Thoroughly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Sara, for your lovely review and we're glad you enjoyed your stay. The steakhouse is called El Curro. If you can't manage to eat all your steak, they are quite happy for you to take it home and then it's just as delicious eaten cold the next day!

From the Owner

The main benefits of Casa La Higuera is it's position on the edge of Canillas de Albaida. It is just a 5 minute walk to the centre of the village where you can buy all your grocery needs or eat out. Competa is a 25 minute walk away. Yet, the villa is not overlooked and has panoramic views from the terrace. The garden and terraces face south west so sunshine all day.
