About Alison Hurford

With our youngest child leaving home for university we started looking for our holiday home. We found Casa La Higuera and straight away knew it was the house for us. In a few years time we hope to spend more time in Spain but in the meantime we are quite happy to rent it out to people looking for a quality villa, in a stunning area of Spain where the climate is fantastic.

Alison Hurford purchased this villa in 2013

Why Alison Hurford chose Axarquia (Costa del Sol)

After renting many villa's throughout Europe, we finally found a place where we wanted to return again and again. We fell in love with the scenery, climate and laid back way of life. As soon as you arrive you feel relaxed and will certainly never tire of the amazing views from our terrace.

What makes this villa unique

The main benefits of Casa La Higuera is it's position on the edge of Canillas de Albaida. It is just a 5 minute walk to the centre of the village where you can buy all your grocery needs or eat out. Competa is a 25 minute walk away. Yet, the villa is not overlooked and has panoramic views from the terrace. The garden and terraces face south west so sunshine all day.

Well equipped villa with panoramic views

  • 4 of 5

This is a well equipped villa with a good pool and really lovely mountain views from the terrace. It's ideal for two couples travelling together as the twin room and shower in the separate casita give a little more privacy than all being in the main house. For a cold evening the wood burner is very efficient making the place cosy.

Canillas is just a short walk away......we thought it was charming and local people were very friendly.

The perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely 5 nights in Casa La Higuera in April. It is a stunning, modern property with an unforgettable view. It is perfectly situated just outside the town of Canillas de Albaida. The excellent restaurants of Canillas and Competa are within walking distance but the villa is a peaceful oasis of calm. We loved sitting outside the villa, watching the sun set over the mountains with a refreshing G&T with lemons picked from the garden (recommended by Alison!).

Once suitably relaxed, we ventured out on hikes in the mountains and also rented bikes from Competa to cycle to a "lost village". The local towns give you an authentic taste of Spain (not always the case down at the coast) but I still managed to find a sports bar with an English proprietor who very kindly put the rugby on for me!

Alison was helpful and responsive, making the booking process very straightforward. We will be back soon to "borrow" more lemons!

Many thanks Alison & Nick

Wonderfully Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

Spent 2 wonderful weeks here in August this year and we have just booked to return next summer! Casa La Higuera has everything you could need for a truly relaxing holiday. Situated just a couple of minutes walk down from the Competa to Canillas de Albaida road the villa really can boast fabulous panoramic views stretching from the village of Canillas with the mountains behind all the way round and down to the coast in the south. It is so peaceful ...... in the morning you can watch the sun gradually creep up and across the valley and in the evening the setting sun is a perfect backdrop for a chilled glass of wine or two!

The house itself is spotlessly clean and very well equipped but it is the outdoor space which is particularly special for living, dining and relaxing. The comfy sunloungers are ideal both for sun worshippers and those seeking a bit of shade and the pool is perfect for cooling off.

A gentle stroll takes you to Canillas where the local shops will meet many of your needs. The two bar/restaurants at the top of the village, El Rincon de Mateo and Las Esperillas, are very easily reached and well worth a visit.

Competa is larger and has more variety for both shopping and eating out. 5 minutes by car or about 25 minutes leisurely stroll it is certainly worth visiting and exploring. The main square, Plaza Almijara, is a great place to sit and watch the world go by.

Everything about the stay at Casa La Higuera was a lovely, positive experience and so it is a very big thank you to Alison and her team in Spain. Really looking forward to returning in 2017!

Superb. Best we have stayed at

  • 5 of 5

I shouldn't be writing anything about this villa really because I want to keep it to myself, but I promised Alison that I would, so her goes. It really is a gem of a villa, in excellent order and better than described. It is ideally positioned within easy walking distance of Canillas and east driving distance of Competa. Peaceful and quiet with a great swimming pool, which is ideal for kids to splash around in. We can't wait to go back next year. Many, many thanks Alison

Six stars next year??

  • 5 of 5

From first to last our stay at La Higuera really was 5 star.

The lucky owner, Alison, was very helpful and made the whole booking process pain free. The property managers in Spain met us at a charming local restaurant/bar, of which more later, and left us at the villa confident that they would respond quickly if we needed them (we didn't!).

You will find the layout of the house and grounds flows nicely and because the garden does not need to be fenced for security the whole valley seems to be yours. We dare you to sit and with a glass of something facing the setting sun and not sigh one of those huge weight off your shoulders sighs.

It really is possible to stroll to the two very adequate minimarkets in Canillas in less than 10 minutes. Perfect for fresh breakfast bread and cakes. Close by is a lovely bar/restaurant called Cerezo. A different walking route takes you to the original meeting place Las Esprillas. A good 3 course menu del dia including a bottle of wine and beer was outstanding value at 30 euros for two inclusive of tip.

La Higuera is paradise if you need somewhere to chill and recharge and we left cursing ourselves for not booking a longer stay.

The great service continued on landing back in the UK as our breakages deposit was refunded within days.

Alison tells us that there are plans to improve the villa even more this winter so be prepared for the first 6 star review in 2017.

Perfect- look no further!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this property for 2 months (December/January) and loved every minute!

Firstly the location and positioning are amazing; a peaceful rural setting but very close (2-5 mins walk) from two beautiful villages with a couple of small but well-stocked supermarkets, several cafes and restaurants, bakery etc. A 15 minute walk the other way takes you into the larger village of Competa with a large choice of shops and eateries. All are lovely places to while away the time.

The views from the house and gardens are spectacular. Sitting out with a coffee in the mornings became our favourite time of day, watching the sunlight come up and turn the mountains to red and orange was breath-taking and we never bored of it.

The house itself is spotless, tastefully decorated and has everything you could possibly need for your stay, from the kitchen to the garden. There are plenty of books, DVDs and games and the English TV channels kept us in touch with the goings-on back home. The log-burner was well-used during our stay as it gets quite nippy once the sun goes down in the winter, but the house soon warmed up and we were very cosy and comfortable. The beds are comfortable and mattresses seem new. We used the annexe for visiting family and it was equally comfortable and well-appointed.

You won’t get better than this property- we can’t recommend it enough for everything from short breaks to longer stays, for young and old, families and singles and everyone in between! Look no further!

Thanks Alison & Nick!
