Whitehouse Barns are ideal for families and nature lovers (the bird-life here is renowned), and when joined together are perfect for large family get-togethers and other groups. They are well-equipped with underfloor heating, wood-burning stove, dishwasher, washing facilities, free wi-fi etc. Each barn offers: A very spacious open-plan living/dining/kitchen area with French windows to morning and evening terrace. Entrance hall. Bathroom with wc. Separate wcs. Three (Upper Barn) or four (Lower) bedrooms. Plenty for children to do with games, books, large playbarn with tabletennis and table football, swings and two acres to run around in while the adults relax. Babysitting service available.

About Penelope Roskell-Griffiths

The Griffiths family consists of two adults and a son at university and a thirteen-year old daughter. We bought the barns in 2000 when the barns and land were still as they had been when used for dairy farming. Richard is an architect (Richard Griffiths Architects) and had always wanted a property in Suffolk, as he had been coming here regularly for twenty years and loved it. In 2001 we converted the barns and developed the land into a relaxed, wild meadow with sitting and play areas. We still use the barns ourselves for our own holidays and our children have grown up holidaying regularly here. So it really does feel like a "home from home".

Booking Notes:
Please see the booking section on our website www.whitehousebarns.co.uk for booking form, prices and availability etc. Please note that the owners intend to sell Whitehouse Barns in spring 2017, and are currently not taking bookings beyond New Year. (Details re the sale can be obtained from Durrants in Southwold or The Modern House).

Changeover Day:
Upper is normally Friday, Lower Saturday but these are flexible outside high season.

Upper Barn £425 to £835 per week, Lower Barn £500 to £970 per week.
Weekend breaks (Friday to Monday) available for two-thirds weekly price. Mid-week breaks (Monday to Friday) available for half weekly price.

Perfectly situated for a quiet & peaceful holiday with wonderful panoramic views of Bulcamp marshes

My husband, family and I had a wonderful week over Christmas in the barn. We woke up to a beautiful blue sky every morning and magnificent views over the tidal marshes of the Blyth River. My husband and youngest son are keen ornithologists so they were in seventh heaven surrounded by thousands of birds. The highlights were seeing around 400 avocets every day outside our sitting room window, several marsh harriers and a goshawk flying low over the water! The house was situated in the perfect position to enjoy all these sights - and more. The barn was quiet, peaceful and had a warm and cosy atmosphere. The rooms were comfortable and adequately equipped and we particularly enjoyed the open plan living room where we spent our evenings over the Christmas week. The Barn is well situation for visiting interesting local places, close to Southwold and the coast. We also had a number of lovely walks in the local area and further afield along the coast in Dunwich. All in all, a memorable week.

An absolute delight

We had a most comfortable, relaxing and refreshing stay in Upper Barn. The location, with its wonderful views and feeling of space in every direction, is both stunning and peaceful, and we felt the design of the property was beautifully thought out and in harmony with the setting. The accommodation provided everything we needed to enjoy our stay, from comfy furnishings to a cozy wood burner - it was lovely to return 'home' to, after a day out walking and exploring the area. From Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich to Aldeburgh and Orford the property is within easy reach of so many wonderful places and sights, beautiful beaches and yummy places to eat. We'll be back!

Upper Barn

We must pay compliments to this property due to the situation of these barns. We stayed in 'Upper barn' but if anything it appeared that 'Lower barn' would be even better if you had a bigger party of people. We were a party of two with a further two visitors for one day.

Having just survived the remodelling of a new kitchen, some facilities were found to be 'a little tired'.

We enjoyed our stay and felt renewed after the few days spent with the wildlife and the birds.

Walberswick (sand and pebbles) 4 miles (10 mins by car) plus many other beautiful unspoilt Suffolk beaches nearby.

Nearest station is Darsham. The barns are about 2-3 hours drive from London.

Notes:

  • Outside: Both barns have brick terraces with dining tables and chairs to enjoy sunshine all day, usually from March through to October half-term. There are two acres of land, with a playbarn, swings and beautiful views of the estuary and surrounding farmland with sheep, cows and all kinds of wildlife and occasionally seals basking.
