An old farmhouse with 4 bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large sitting room, and a large kitchen. Set within 11 acres of private farmland, including outbuildings, an orchard, three ponds, a holy well with healing powers, and a stream running along the edge. A dozen miles from the sandy beaches of the eastern Cherbourg peninsula. An ideal place for a family holiday with endless outdoor activities available (including go-carting nearby) as well as historical sites ranging from the D-Day landing beaches to the city of Bayeux nearby.

My husband is a former war correspondent and a best-selling historian who has written several books about the Second World War. Many of our guests have enjoyed a personalised tour of the landings beaches at his hands. I am an aid worker, and I find the tranquility of Normandy a useful respite from my travels to Asia and Africa. We have one six year old daughter who is at school in London, where we live.

Home from home!

As I walked into front door I was impressed by the space,light and airiness - massive kitchen and sitting room, matched by the main bedroom with its ensuite bathroom. Everywhere smelt fresh and clean. Comfortable sofa for lounging in sitting room, wonderful beds with thankfully one set of non allergenic bedding! Constant hot water! Heating if we wanted it.Large safe garden with trampoline which grandchildren really appreciated. Contact numbers provided for any problems but absolutely not needed.

Good access to shops. Short drives to beaches and tourist attractions - we visited Jurques zoo (50mins) Really splendid.

I hope we return soon!

A tranquil retreat, perfect location, beautiful.

Stunning house - so much space for everyone - the master bedroom is huge and gorgeous. We had a lovely week with 2 children (11 and 13) and dog! Plenty of fabulous old movies on DVD and the house has so many interesting books. Kitchen was lovely - a real home from home, sitting room very comfortable and again bigger than it looks in the photos. The house was very clean, fresh cotton bedding, plenty of towels (for the plenty of bathrooms!). The gardens are very pretty - lovely to sit under the willow trees by one of the ponds. The location is fabulous - near enough to town, close to the most beautiful, quiet beaches. The owners were really helpful. We will be booking again next year ... a relaxing, easy holiday.

Lovely rural gite

Wonderful relaxing atmosphere greeted us as we arrived and continued for the whole week. The property is very spacious and ideal for family holidays as well as for friends with plenty of sitting areas both inside and outside. Exactly as described on the website. Wonderful and I'm sure we'll be back.

Beautiful house in lovely relaxing location!

We spent a fabulous week in this lovely house which was everything we had expected and hoped for from the listing description. The property was clean and well maintained. We had two of our daughters with us and the layout of the house was ideal for a family group. The downstairs rooms are large with plenty of space for everyone to eat, relax and chat together in the evenings, while the arrangements of the bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs allow plenty of privacy. The wood burning stove was fabulous on chillier evenings! The gardens and patio areas are very private, great for dogs and well thought out to enjoy the sun, and we barbecued most evenings. The owners were easily contactable, responding very promptly to any queries. This is a lovely region of France, and we were within easy reach of lots of great beaches, including the DDay landing beaches and many lovely towns and villages, with numerous shops, restaurants and tourist attractions, including Bayeux with its famous cathedral and tapestry. We would highly recommend this property and hope to return again soon.

We spent a very enjoyable week. The house is very well-equipped and spacious.

Lots of good bathrooms and all the rooms are very good.

Very peaceful as it is at the end of a long drive.

The owners are very pleasant and helpful.

I would recommend this and it is good value.

Gorgeous Rural Idyll

We loved every minute at Le Clos Fontaine. The farmhouse is a beautiful "home from home" and the quiet countryside was exactly the setting for which we hoped. We stayed with our three children (6 year old and 4 year old twins) who loved the freedom to run around and spy Amy, the Duck. The kitchen was large and had everything we needed. The bedrooms were very comfortable. We had plenty of space. There is a very helpful information booklet that told us exactly where the supermarkets were and gave very useful restaurant recommendations, which we happily followed. The location of Le Clos Fontaine was perfect for exploring the surrounding countryside and beaches. A thoroughly superb property that we would enthusiastically recommend. Hoping to return next year!

From the Owner

Although work and school commits us to London, we are both francophiles and used to holiday regularly in Northern France before we bought our farmhouse. Eventually we decided to establish roots in the area. The silence and the peace of the surroundings are a welcome antidote to our noisy, busy London life.

Nearest Ferry : Cherbourg at 58 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Golf Centre Manche at 19 Kilometres Nearest Train : Carentan at 7 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Carentan at 9 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Utah, at 16 Kilometres Car: necessary


A dozen miles (about 10 to 15 minutes drive) from the sandy beaches of the eastern Cherbourg Peninsula, including the famous D-Day landings beaches.


Approximately an hour from the 2 ferry ports of Cherbourg and Caen, both linked by Brittany Ferries to the UK ports of Portsmouth and Poole. Owners can secure tenants a 10% discount on Brittany Ferriees. Use of a car is essential.


The nearest village, Montmartin, is a five minute drive. The nearest town is Carentan, a 10 minute drive. The property is about 20 minutes drive from St. Mere Eglise and 40 minutes drive from the famous town of Bayeux. All along the coast you can visit the famous D-Day landings beaches and places of historical interest relating to the allied landings.

Further Details:

The nearest town, Carentan, has 3 large supermarkets, as well as banks, bakers, butchers, fish shops and greengrocers in the town centre and a Monday market in the town square.
