Welcome to Chez Alouette, this beautiful town house is only 3 minutes’ walk from the town centre which has a great atmosphere, quaint cobbled streets, a busy covered market, plus very good restaurants and bars. The house is located in a very quiet side street and virtually next door to Château de Jonzac.
Although in the centre of town, the house backs onto open countryside, with tremendous views from the terrace and private garden, affording complete privacy, peace and tranquillity. All amenities are close by in the town so if you choose to skip cooking and extend the sunbathing, then there is an excellent choice of restaurants merely minutes’ walk away!
Jonzac is unique, a historical spa town and health resort, the season for holidaymakers is 10 months per year, therefore whenever you visit our lovely home, there is always something to do! A beautiful Château, a historic Romanesque Church, an area of outstanding beauty and religious importance, Jonzac is the jewel in the crown of the French west coast.
With the Atlantic resorts and surfing beaches only 45 minutes’ drive, or Bordeaux a similar distance, there are plenty of other popular and famous places to visit such as Cognac, St Emillion, Saintes, Royan, Rochefort and La Rochelle, the location is perfect.
Chez Alouette has all the facilities you will need for a relaxing holiday. The outside is brought into the house by the south facing, elevated terrace, which is on the same level as the reception/kitchen. It is a great outside space, and the private fenced garden below, shaded by a beautiful fig tree to one side and accessed by steps from the terrace, offers seclusion and a great place to relax. Although in the centre of the town, Chez Alouette is a very peaceful retreat in which you can enjoy tranquil days and evenings in complete peace and privacy.
The house generates a welcoming 'home from home' feel the moment you walk in the front door, providing very comfortable accommodation in which to enjoy your holiday. An original centuries old historic property, it has been thoughtfully and tastefully restored and refurbished in February 2013, retaining many of its original features.
The homely house is based on 3 floors, plus a cellar and is large enough for 5, probably best suited to a couple with 3 children (however we have had a good number of 4/5 adults stay in complete comfort!) A cot and high chair and stair gate is available subject to advance notice. Fresh towels and bed linen are provided weekly. Mid stay cleaning and/or a maid service, is by prior agreement and will be subject to a charge.
Good use has been made of the 52-sqm internal space, with a comfortable main bedroom containing a 140-cm double bed and on the same floor, a separate bathroom/shower room and toilet. The second double bedroom/television room/lounge on the top floor, is reached by a separate stairwell with its own privacy door. The bed in this room is a comfortable 140cm sofa bed with a full depth permanent mattress.
The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a fridge/freezer, a microwave oven and grill, espresso coffee machine, kettle, toaster plus numerous other kitchen aids. The small reception lounge adjoins the kitchen with access to the street via the main door. At the other end of the room, the kitchen door leads to the elevated south facing, semi-covered terrace, which overlooks the rear garden. The views are truly magnificent and large enough for al fresco dining, relaxing in the shade, or even sunbathing!
A large cellar/utility area, hewn out of chalkstone (ideal for keeping your wine cool!) houses a washing machine, a full-size freezer and a second toilet, plus plenty of room for storage of cases etc. Also stored in this area is a vacuum cleaner, broom, pan and brush, cleaning equipment and a clothes dryer.
The pretty garden shaded by a fig tree, has all the facilities you could wish for, on the raised terrace an outside gas barbecue, 6 seats, an outside dining table, a large wind-out sun shade/awning, plus a relaxation/sunbathing area. Below, accessed by steps, is the garden and lawn which also has a patio area for seating and table for drinks. The lawn area is large enough for the two sun loungers.
Hi, we are Steve and Sue, thank you for viewing Chez Alouette.
Having spent the last 30 years holidaying all over France, especially the Atlantic coast, we immediately recognised the great location of Jonzac as a superb holiday or short break location. Charente enjoys the second highest sun record in France and Jonzac is perfectly positioned to get the very best of traditional French lifestyle.
Steve and Sue purchased this house in 2013
The positioning of Jonzac town in the middle of the Charente region is absolutely perfect, with a diversity of vineyards, countryside, coastal resorts and idyllic islands and ancient towns close by.
Jonzac itself is a great town, with so much to do, offering an extended holiday season, supporting the spa and hot springs facilities which are open from February to December.
Whereas many French towns shut the shutters after the summer season, Jonzac is still busy and open for business!
The beauty of staying at Chez Alouette is that if you want a quiet time in the country, then just shut the doors and enjoy the views and tranquillity of the terrace and back garden. Although you are in the centre of town it really is like being in the middle of the countryside!
However if you do want to enjoy some lovely restaurants, a Jazz Bar or similar, then you are merely a 2-3 minute walk! Mid summer is very busy with free concerts, theatre productions and many other events organised by the town and surrounding areas.
Location, location, location... an often over utilised cliché in this case it is absolutely true!
June/July 2014. We have just spent a week at Chez Alouette, the weather was fantastic, the house was a delight, with a super terrace outside the kitchen, a beautiful back garden and lower patio. The garden backs onto open fields and farmland, remarkable really as the house is also very close to the town centre and restaurants. Brasserie Janzacais was very good value and a great atmosphere. The Hotel Coq D'or served some great food and drinks, just across the square from the Chateau. Royan and Cognac are close by. We will be booking next year! Thank you Sue and Steve for providing such a lovely holiday home!
June 2014. Great location, very comfortable house with all that you need, good value for money. Why bother with the countryside when you can get a location like this! Will definitely book again when in Europe.
Ideal home and location for parents visiting family in Jonzac. Clean, compact, all facilities, suntrap balcony, peace and tranquillity and helpful owners. Plus the surprise of Boules and Boggle (new to me) for our three grandchildren to play with in the garden - thank you for that Steve and Sue.
The balcony provided wonderful views, a table and enough seating for this family of seven to enjoy long, lazy, sunny lunches.
Jonzac itself is a beautiful small town with a fascinating history. No exciting nights out, just, walks along the river, going to market, visiting the parks, watching Boules and dining out, all without using the car! Couldn't have been better. We look forward to many return visits.
Barrie and Margaret.
Lovely location and terrace in the sun.
Perfect retreat for me and my husband... The balcony with beautiful views out to the countryside (covered section too for shade or shelter). The cosy but modern kitchen / lounge. We decided to do mostly our own cooking rather than eat out as we enjoyed fitting in to the day to day life here ..,popping out to the market, boulagerie and patisserie, talking with the friendly people of Jonzac. Found the kitchen to cater for all our culinary needs.
The main bedroom and bathroom are just lovely... a powerful shower and a large comfy bed.
It is so quiet too so perfect for burying your head in a book or just quiet contemplation.
Nice walks around the town and parks and countryside. Plenty of unique boutiques. Lots of hidden gems if you take the time to look.
We shall definitely be returning. It was just right! Thank you Steve and Sue!
We really enjoyed our stay at Chez Alouette. The location of the property is fantastic with everything within walking distance. The house is very well equipped and comfortable with a lovely garden which was perfect for our dog who had a very happy stay. Despite being dog friendly, the house is very clean and there was no trace of previous canine guests! Jonzac is a pretty town, and the view of the chateau from the terrace was a great feature. The town itself is quiet and not particularly touristy - it didn't have a wide range of bars and restaurants but we enjoyed dinner at Hotel de L'Ecu and Hostellerie du Coq d'Or. The kids enjoyed a day at Les Antilles water park and we canoed in nearby Pons. All in all, a very relaxing and happy holiday
Chez Alouette is compact but had all the amenities we required and was spotlessly clean. Jonzac is a great base for exploring the region. The house is in easy walking distance to a number of really good restaurants, patisseries, shops and the indoor market three days a week. Steve was extremely helpful and I would have no hesitation in recommending this property.
Stayed here 1 week in June and have to say steve and sue have created a great place to relax and enjoy the local area .
Furnished to a high standard it has everything required to make it a comfortable stay.
The rear sunny balcony is a fantastic place and really sets it apart from other town houses. Great place to relax and look over the countryside .
Great position for strolling into lovely Jonzac ,makes the stay really easy
I would recommend for sure
