About the property

Cottage in Whitby, North Yorkshire Moors, England - Situated On Arguments Yard, The Cottage Is A Few Steps Away From The Harbour Beach

Cor Cottage is within easy walking distance of all the amenities of Whitby. It is a two minute walk to the famous 199 steps leading to Whitby Abbey, and also has immediate access to the many restaurants and shops serving the area. The cottage is decorated to a high standard. It also has the added advantage of its own private outside space, a feature not common with this type of property in Whitby. There is a patio area to the rear of the house, providing a pleasant opportunity for outdoor dining. This is an area suitable for barbecuing. It is also completely secure, so children have an outside space for play. An additional feature of the property is that we have a private parking space available free to guests at the cottage. This is very useful in Whitby where parking is often difficult to find. The parking is approximately 10 - 15 minutes walk away from the cottage. You can though park temporarily immediately outside the cottage for the purpose of loading/unloading of cars.

About Christine Russell

We have holidayed in Whitby for well over 30 years and have owned Cor Cottage for 22 years. All our 3 children loved Whitby and the cottage, being on the old cobbled part of Church Street, is perfect for a family holiday. The harbour side is 20 metres away and a good beach (Tate Hill Sands is 150 metres away). With good pubs and restaurants within a couple of minutes walk the adults also enjoy the location.

Christine Russell purchased this cottage in 1991

Why Christine Russell chose Whitby

We had wished to buy a cottage in the Whitby area for family holidays.

By choosing Whitby you can have a sea-side town, beach or walking/county side holiday.

Whitby is on the edge of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors with endless possibilities for country walks at any time of year.

Whitby itself boasts good beaches, plenty of attractions for children as well as a good selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is situated on the old cobbled part of Church Street in the old town (East side of the river).

The cottage is on the level so there is no walking up hills to get to it.

Cars cannot be left outside the cottage but they can be brought along for unloading prior to taking any cars (it can be more than one with prior arrangement) to the reserved parking.

Unusually for old cottages in Whitby Cor cottage has its own enclosed patio. This is a safe environment for outside dining and sunbathing!

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Homely cottage in the centre of Whitby. Everything you need for a week away. Washing machine and dishwasher very useful. Little courtyard garden where we had lunch most days. Everything is within walking distance with Coop supermarket over the bridge.

Parking is an uphill 15 minute walk but we choose to spend most of our time in Whitby so it didn't bother us. We did big supermarket shop in car when we arrived which worked well. You can park outside the cottage to unload and overnight.

Can highly recommend Mr Chips and the Humble Pie and Mash - both at the end of the street. Go Ape was Great for teenagers in Dalby Forest. They also do Segways.

Cosy and comfortable cottage.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely character cottage in the heart of Whitby, all mod cons, clean and comfortable, really loved it. Down side is the parking issue, but I knew it was a treck from the property, and parking is a big problem in Whitby. Otherwise I would have no problem recommending this cottage and am thinking of booking again myself next year.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice review of our cottage. I'm pleased you liked it and found it so comfortable. The parking is a 10 to 15 minute walk away, but I think you'd agree that the advantage of the cottage is that it is right in the centre of Whitby, where there is virtually no parking. It is possible to park temporarily right outside the house in order to load/unload your car, without any having to treck up alleyways as in many parts of the town. And of course, the parking is free, which again is a bonus in Whitby. Once more, thanks for your comments. I appreciate you taking the time to write them.

This is a lovely cottage, full of character, tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and well equipped. It's also very cosy, having a combi boiler and a temperature dial on the wall which you can adjust to your needs. Ideal for a nippy week in March! There's also a good supply of DVDs and books to keep you occupied when the weather outside is not so inviting. The location is perfect, being on one of Whitby's most charming streets, loaded with little shops, tea rooms and pubs. (I recommend the fish and chips, and the pub quiz on Wednesday night at the Board Inn, which is a very short stumble up the road!) The local Co-op is a 5 min walk across the bridge. The nearest beach at the harbour is only a 2 minute walk, so I would imagine in summer this will be ideal for families with children.

A couple of things to be aware of - as noted on the site, the allocated parking space is a good 15 mins walk away up a big hill, although parking outside the cottage to load/unload was no problem. Also, the only shower in the property is in the en-suite, so whoever bags that room needs to be prepared to share! The water pressure in the taps is ferocious though, so you can run a bath in the main bathroom in in a couple of minutes. Part of it's charm is that the cottage is on several different levels, there are steps down to the kitchen and a step between the living and dining area, which caught us all out during the week (fortunately not when carrying a glass a red wine!), so it's possibly not suitable for families with crawling babies or toddlers. Other than that, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. A great find!
