About the property

Cottage in Spurway, near Oakford, Tiverton, Mid Devon - Idyllic Hideaway In Peaceful Rural Location

The Old Barn at Spurway Mill Cottage is a recently refurbished, spacious one bedroom detached cottage located in a secluded valley with gardens bordered by a stream and adjacent woodland. The cottage is located at the end of a small 'no through road' lane, just beyond our own property. This area of mid Devon, a few miles south of the Exmoor National Park, is quiet and undisturbed with wooded coombs and hills which surround the cottage. The accommodation is on two floors, a large living room with dining area, separate kitchen, and a shower room on the ground floor and upstairs a double bedroom overlooking the gardens and surrounding woodland.

Overall impression of property - excellent.

If you are looking for seclusion, peace and quiet then this cottage is for you, the cottage is beautifully presented, and the lower gardens are beautiful, perfect place to sit with cup of coffee or tea, and listen to the sound of the stream running through. Jane and John, the owners, are a very friendly couple, nothing is too much trouble for them, the bottle of wine and biscuits awaiting us on arrival was the icing on the cake, big thank you, please may we come back again.

Escape and be away from it all .......

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage with everything you'd need to escape the "hubble-bubble" of life. Idyllic isolated location in a gorgeous valley with nothing but bird-song to wake you each morning from your slumber.

Excellent walks across Exmoor, through ancient oak wooded valleys, along the canal towpath and the north Devon section of the SW coast path are all within an hours drive of the property.

Spurway Mill Cottage is an excellent place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is in a beautiful and quiet rural setting, 2 miles from the main road along a single track country lane. Our stay was at the start of December and the cottage was nice and warm on our arrival. We were greeted by the owners and pesented with a lovely welcome pack. Everywhere was really clean and well looked after. Spurway Mill Cottage is a perfect rural retreat.

Lovely converted barn in great rural location

  • 5 of 5

This barn was converted to the highest standard with love and care by the warm and lovely owners Jane and John . My wife and I enjoyed our week stay here, we were welcomed by Jane and John and made to feel at home. Some starting up items were provided including a bottle of wine and milk which was a nice touch. We could not find any negative issues in this cottage, it was just perfect from all aspects , the whole set up was amazing.

A little hidden gem !

  • 5 of 5

This wee cottage is a little gem ! There was a lovely welcome bottle of wine, chocolate nibbles and cheese biscuits on arrival oh and a bottle of milk in the fridge. The cottage was very clean and I have to say probably the best equipped kitchen I have EVER stayed in. There was also tea, coffee, sugar, salt & pepper We ate out most nights but we were able to cook 'proper meals' too. The weather was exceptionally hot while we were there so we travelled to Torquay, Plymouth, Woolacombe beach and Street (Clarks Village) in Somerset. We found that most outings we did required us to drive for about an hour which wasn't a problem - google maps is a great thing!!

The bed was very large and extremely comfortable, there is plenty of wardrobe space and hangers, a dressing table with a sewing kit and if you really wanted to, you could wash your clothes in the modern washing machine and iron them too ! (there was even washing detergent too)

The bathroom houses the shower, sink and toilet along with the washing machine and lovely warm heated towel rail, perfect for warming up your towels or drying your washing out of the machine. Good quality towels are supplied and the shower is powerful.

Everything you could possible want is in this cottage, not only will you get a dvd to use but there is a very good selection of dvds to play and if that's not enough there are a selection of books and a board game in the cupboard.

The lane down to the cottage is very narrow and not for the faint hearted but we only encountered traffic/horses twice on the lane so it isn't a problem. You absolutely must spend some time in the garden, it's beautiful with a stream and sun loungers to lay on if the weather is warm enough. (perhaps a small bbq would be an added bonus)

Nothing is too much trouble for your hosts, they are not intrusive at all. We had a wonderful stay and may well return in years to come :)

Owner's Response: Just to clarify: The lane down to the cottage is a typical Devon country lane with passing places.

The best you can get

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed the privacy and the luxury of this charming cottage, so lovingly renovated. Its secluded garden and the gentle sound of the little stream, -yes, we could see the baby trout-, running alongside completed the picture. If you love to be active, are still going strong, and if you want to explore the beautiful spots Devon has to offer, this place is probably the best you can get. Even by the highest (Continental) standards, the price-quality ratio is excellent.

We came all the way from The Netherlands, survived the congestions on the M4 and M5, stayed for a week and concluded that the kind hospitality of Jane & John and the pleasure of staying at Spurway Cottage have surpassed our expectations.

Spurway is a small hamlet of some 4 properties, about 1½ miles from the village of Oakford. The village pub in Oakford – the recently renovated Red Lion Hotel - is a traditional country pub and restaurant serving real ale and good local food. Nearby Bampton (approx 5 miles) and Dulverton (7 miles) have excellent restaurants and pubs and a range of shops. Additional shops and facilities can be found at Tiverton about 8 miles away.

The Exe Valley offers plenty of options for walking, both directly from the cottage, and also on Exmoor which is easily reached via Dulverton within a 15 min. drive

More active pursuits including sailing and canoeing are available at nearby Wimbleball Lake and the area offers ample opportunities for fishing and cycling

The North Devon Coastal town of Barnstaple is just 40 min. away with the surfing beaches of Saunton Sands & Croyde & Woolacombe Bays beyond.

South Devon seaside resorts and Jurassic Coast are within an hours drive.
