About Nicola Patton

We are a young family who have holidayed in the Vendee regularly over the years. We instantly fell head over heels in love with the area and, growing more and more attached with each visit, enjoyed our time there so much that we decided to take on our own project, spending 3 years permanently in France renovating the property and the adjacent barn, set to be our very own slice of Vendée holiday escapism! We have now returned to the UK, recently adding another addition to the family with our 2nd daughter, Amélie, but will continue to be regular visitors in France! :o)

Why Nicola Patton chose La Chapelle-aux-Lys

Setting our sights on renovating a property for families and couples alike to enjoy and experience the beauty of the Vendee and everything it has to offer as we do, we could not believe our luck when we stumbled across the beautifully enchanting cottage and surroundings that is "Le Lys" (translating into English to "The Lily"), which we purchased in December 2012. Although already full of charm as it stood, recent renovations have been carried out to the cottage to add even more sparkle, breathing in more life, but taking great care to maintain the typical French style and authenticity it has and keeping that certain "je ne sais quoi".

What makes this cottage unique

It truly is a stunning cottage which is in keeping with the area and welcomes you with open arms, offering you a private, comfortable & relaxing base so all you have left to do is enjoy your holiday!

It is our complete focus that all our guests have a comfortable stay and take back with them happy memories of their holiday at Le Lys. Whether it is staying at base and lounging whilst enjoying the cottage, stunning views and private gardens; taking local walks or venturing out to explore the ever changing landscapes of the area, attractions, local food and activities, there really is something for everyone and we hope your experience of the Vendee leaves you as captivated as we are!

Beautiful, spacious property in the Vendee

  • 5 of 5

Le Lys is a large property with plenty of room for a big family. We stayed there for 2 weeks with our three teenage children and found it perfect for a relaxing holiday. The house is clean and well-maintained and the facilities matched those in the description. We spent very many happy hours in the large garden and around the splash pool. There are bikes provided and we were able to enjoy a couple of outings to local villages by bicycle. La Chataignerie (local town) is a short drive away and ideal for the supermarkets. We visited La Rochelle and the Ile de Re as well as Venise Verte where you can take a boat out. The neighbouring village of Vouvant is worth a visit and there are beautiful lakes to swim in nearby. Nicola and Scott who own the property were very helpful but not at all intrusive. A great place for a holiday!

Quirky and charming

  • 4 of 5

A lovely house, stylish and spacious, clean and well resourced with a few British plugs, BbcTV, WIFI,kitchen equipment and welcome pack. A lovely sociable kitchen. Wood on floor slopes up and down appropriated apparently from Napoleon's warships! Manor House nearby was used by SAS during 2nd world war. Very quiet area. Owners very helpful and friendly . Vouvant very charming , cafe melucine has unusual restricted menu but this is made up for in fantastic service. Parthenais worth a visit for its market and historic centre. Lovely local walks great if you have a dog.

Idylic escape

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything about this holiday. Directions to Le Lys were easy to follow and all the admin before we got there went smoothly.

The house is beautiful and really well renovated with some great features. Rooms were all unique with real character - watch the sloping floor upstairs :)

The kitchen is nice and big with decent quality fixtures and fittings so cooking in was an option - one downside of the place is the lack of restaurants close by although the ones within striking distance are good value high quality food. Outside in the garden is lovely and perfect for sunbathing and letting the dogs loose, mostly enclosed, with quite a few trees and bushes all well kept. Patio area is perfect for evening cocktails and a BBQ, and theres a pool although we didn't use it. The whole place is well maintained and clean, and the welcome pack of nibbles wine and a few other bits was a class touch.

The local area is really pleasant rolling landscape with woods fields and lakes, great for walking and chilling, plus some nice towns and villages within 30km - it's a secret part of the Vendee with very few tourists so is great for a getaway to chill. Thoroughly recommend the place - big thanks to Nicola and Scott and their lovely daughter Summer fr being so helpful and friendly making it a great stay.

La Faute Sur Mer

15 mins drive from Mervent with its fresh water lake, safe swimming, pedalos, bar restaurant and watersports school. 15 minutes to Lac Xanton-Chassenon, with all the above and a man-made beach. 1 hours drive to the beaches of La Faute Sur Mer, La Tranche, Jard and Chatelaillon, the harbour side town of La Rochelle, and the unforgettable Ile de Re with its beaches, small ports, shops and cafes perfect for enjoying the Vendee's 2,400 hours of sunshine per year - equivalent to the French Riviera. Charron is renowned for its mussels and is the place to go if you like seafood!

There are so many quaint and pretty villages to explore within just a stone's throw of the cottage, namely Foussais Payré, Le Bousseau and Vouvant.

Throughout the summer there are various festivals in the nearby villages and towns to enjoy.

The nearest town, La Chataigneraie is a 10 minute drive, offering 2 supermarkets, banks, shops, restaurants, and an open air swimming pool.

Le Lys is en route on the marked and mapped "Randonnée du Lys", which offers two planned walks, varying in distance and highlighting the local attractions. It is also on the "Sentiers Cyclables de la Vendée" and so is a perfect place for the avid walker, hiker or cyclist.

Within a 10 minute drive, or 30 minute bike ride from the cottage, hidden away in La Tardiere is the green nature/leisure park of Etruyère, offering a large lake, restaurant/bar with pool and water slide, horse riding, marked trails, pedalos, boules and table tennis and a small outdoor sanded play area with slide for the little ones. There are picnic benches for those who would prefer to bring their own lunch. Perfectly placed adjecent to the restaurant is the Lilo z'enfants adventure park, aimed at children aged 2 - 12 years, full to the brim with fun and activities to keep your children endlessly entertained, giving you the opportunity to relax and soak up some rays whilst being able to keep an eye on them. Lilo's activities include: inflatable slides and bouncy castles, bungee trampolines, a children's electric quad track, playhouses, sand and ball pits, games and lots more! The perfect place for all the family.

Chantermerle, with it's outdoor go-karting track and adjecent adventure park, is just a 10 minute drive from the cottage. Set within the heart of the forest, the adventure park is packed full of outdoor fun and adventure with treetop courses, zipwires, outdoor games, discovery trails, crazy golf, picnic areas and lots more, it makes for a great, active and fun filled family day out!

Classed as one of the prettiest villages in France, the stunning Vouvant is just 15 minutes drive, girdled by a loop of the river Mère with beautiful medieval buildings, stunning views, superb restaurants, local artists and art galleries, it offers an excellent mix of art, culture and history.

Adjacent to Vouvant and also reachable within 15 minutes is the village of Mervent with its huge forest extending over 5000 hectares and vast fresh water lake with safe swimming and numerous sports activities available suchas hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and many water activities with its' own water sports school, pedalos and canoes to hire. Within the forest is Le Parc de Pierre-Brun adventure park, with something for all ages and packed full of activities and rides, this makes for a fun packed family day out. There are also restaurants over looking the lake and a man made beach where you can relax, sunbathe and swim. Also within Mervent is the Naturezoo.

Reachable within 20 minutes is Le Lac De Chasson, Xanton Chassenon, which has just undergone huge redevelopment, making the lake one of the largest water park attractions in the Vendee! It has a large lake offering safe swimming, a water flume, toddler's pool, pedalos, man made beach with cafe, children's outdoor play area and picnic area too! There is also a nearby restaurant with a view over the lake.

The lush green and very beautiful "Venise Verte", Marais Poitevin is reachable within approximately 30 minutes and is definitely worth a visit. Renowned for its waterways, the best way to see the region and its wildlife is by boat (or bicycle). There are many embarcaderes where the barques can be hired with or without a guide and there are picnic spots at the water's edge; some hirers offer nocturnal trips.

Other attractions to visit in the area are the amazing historical Puy du Fou, which has been voted Europe's no. 1 theme park attraction and has the following Trip Advisor quote when given the 2013 Travellers Choice Award: " for an unforgettable trip with family or friends! Puy du Fou Park is a whirlwind of extraordinary shows and a real breath of fresh air far from everyday hustle and bustle."

Located near to Poitiers and reachable within 1.5 hours is Futuroscope, or Parc du Futuroscop
