About the Owner

We love Grasmere and the surrounding area with its abundant wildlife, the birds, deer, red squirrels, badgers, and lately, the otters. it's often like a ringside seat looking out from the house over the lake.

Silver Fell was entirely renovated in 2012 to provide luxury, eg spa bath, underfloor heating, wi-fi, yet with the all-important sustainable approach.

The eco-features include an air-source heat pump which provides central heating and most hot water. Solar thermal panels provide additional hot water. Solar photovoltaic panels produce electricity and feed back to the grid.

The extension was timber-frame with sheep's wool insulation used in walls, ceilings and loft;

Organic, natural paint and varnish; with natural fibre furnishings and wooden/oak floor.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Best view in Grasmere!

Have a lovely holiday. The views from the property are second to none, especially when it snowed!

The property is well maintained with 2 spacious bedrooms, both of which are en-suite with under floor heating.

Thank you Nick & Polly

Exceeded all expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We are a thirty/forty something(!) couple who have been visiting Grasmere for many years, and we have stayed in quite a few cottages dotted around the village and surrounding areas. This is the first time we have booked a cottage outside of the usual lakes holiday cottage companies. And what a revelation!

Booking and communication with the owners, Polly and Nick, was easy. They were responsive, friendly and helpful.

They have designed a lovely, private and well laid out hideaway with THE most superb views towards Heron Pike and Nab Scar, and comfortable outside seating to make the most of those views and soak up the sun (if you get lucky with the weather!) Parking is no problem- there was space for us to park on the drive (a Volvo and a clio) but it is steep so make sure your handbrake is in good order!!

The property is attractively decorated (bathrooms are great - the jet bath is a real treat after a long day on the fells!), well maintained, spotlessly clean with plenty of space to put stuff (&, believe me, we have a lot of walking gear!). We were holidaying as two couples, accompanied by parents, and there was enough space for the four of us to relax, albeit cosily! The kitchen is small but perfect formed and has everything you need - we ate in on three occasions (no restaurant can offer such good views!). I would say that if you were holidaying as two couples you'd want to know each other well - there is sufficient space, but it's cosy.

We were also VERY fortunate with the weather - warm and sunny, rain free days. For the uninitiated, the Lake District is a beautiful part of the country (in my view, the best!) and Grasmere is centrally located. There are a nice mix of great eateries, shops, attractions and of course plenty of fells for walking, but, with short drives out, you are also ideally positioned to reach the main towns of Keswick, Ambleside, Windermere and everything inbetween. It's worth taking a further drive out to Honister Mine, touring the mine and, if you are feeling brave, doing the "via ferrata"!

Silver Fell is adjoined to Nick and Polly's house but they have done a great job in creating a private space for you to call your own for a few days! They have a lovely position in Grasmere and we felt quite privileged that we were able to share in that. We met and chatted with Nick on a few occasions - very friendly, welcoming - as my mum would say "a very nice man"! We will definitely be back - in fact we've booked already!

Wonderful surroundings with the lake of Grasmere and the surrounding hills which make for a very pleasant 10 minute stroll into the village with choice of places to eat. The apartment has an outstanding view of mere and hill. The accommodation is attractive and the owners (next door) were very helpful when we needed them. Buses every half hour for those not wanting to use a car.Best place we have stayed in.

Ideal setting

  • 5 of 5

We chose this apartment mainly for location. It's ideally positioned for a view of Grasmere lake, many local walks, and ten minutes from the village itself. The only real drawback to this, as you'd expect, is that there's no streetlights, so if you want to walk in for dinner or drink, make sure you have a torch or two.

Accommodation is for 4. Sleeping and storage is fine for four people, but we thought there was perhaps not enough storage for food if all four depended on self-catering (we were only two, and only five nights, and that was about right). All facilities were great. Heating ideal. Owners were nearby some of the time, in case of difficulties. (There weren't any). Our only problem was that we had a telescope to watch the stars (we had several beautiful skies) but couldn't use it because of the security light - there seemed no way to turn it off). Obviously, a very minor and specialist requirement! Wifi was unexpectedly good, too. Fine for Warcraft etc, if you've under 30s to appease in the wet. Slope of the drive and a few steps might be a slight problem for anyone with mobility difficulties.

We'd like to return, but it's already pretty much booked up for our slots next year.
