Spacious Holiday Home In Vezelay, Yonne, Burgundy

Overview

Property

Updated: 22-Nov-2016
House in Vezelay, Yonne, Burgundy, France - In The Heart Of The Village, 200 Yards From The Basilica

The house adapts well to individuals, couples, families or large groups. There is a large, well-equipped kitchen and dining area, log fires and central heating. Children are welcome. The terrace overlooks Place Borot and the main street without being overlooked. There is a shared courtyard at the back of the house. Vezelay itself has its own grocery and boulangerie, as well as several specialist shops and art galleries. There are many good restaurants in the village and surrounding area, as well as a number of independent winemakers who welcome visitors. Vezelay has its own appellation, but Chablis, Irancy, St Bris and other well-known wine areas are within easy reach. It is on the edge of the Parc du Morvan, with its lakes, mountains and hiking trails, and there are many marvellous walks around the village itself. Canoeing, kayaking, cycle hire and horse riding are all available locally. The mediaeval town of Avallon is about 15 miles away.

About the Owner

I am a retired clergyman, married with six grandchildren. There are many things we enjoy about Vezelay, in particular the quiet that descends on the village in the evenings, and the local walks and vineyards.

My wife and I both use the house as a retreat when we are writing, and we also bring family and friends together there on special occasions.

Luscious location

A beautiful, atmospheric property in a really amazingly unspoilt tiny village. Vezelay is perched on a hill in the middle of a bowl-shaped valley, and from every lookout one gets a sense of the importance of such a commanding position to the medieval people.

The house itself has huge rooms with flagged floors, and goes on, apparently, forever: it would be great for a get together with a bunch of friends or extended family, as children can be herded onto one of several floors while the adults collapse with a pastis in front of the great baronial fireplace. You'd have to know each other reasonably well, as when the house is filled to capacity there aren't many totally private rooms. The master bedroom is just gorgeous and feels very historical.

The decor is unpretentious, verging on cared-for shabby, but clean, comfortable and entirely suited to the aesthetic of the building. The one place the owners have departed from this aesthetic (rightly so in my opinion) is in the showers, toilets and small but well-equipped kitchen. These are all unashamedly modern and new (they are hose showers, in case, as I do, you care about that kind of thing).

The village has glorious architecture, wisteria, a remarkable quantity of bizarre art shops, also lots of cafes and bistros (everything we had while eating out was delicious, in the way of rural France). There are lots of walks around, but they are all countryside rather than wilderness. Best of all is the basilica at the top of the hill: amazing demons and bible stories carved into the tops of all the pillars. Really stunning.

Half the voices we heard on the street were speaking English: Vezelay is a big tourist destination. I imagine this would be different in the winter, but then you wouldn't get all the wisteria.
