About the property

Apartment in Kinghorn, Nr. Burntisland, Fife, Scotland

Built in the Tudor Gothic style, this impressive castellated stone structure enjoys glimpses out across the Firth of Forth. The Town Hall was constructed in 1826, replacing an earlier medieval building which was hit and seriously damaged by lightning. Part of the original building is thought to date back to the 12th century. Latterly it was used to provide the debating chamber, offices and prison cells for the Burgh Council. The new building was designed by the architect Thomas Hamilton (1784-1858) and was used for Council functions for almost 150 years but fell into disrepair in the 1980s. It was restored in 2009. Accommodation is on the 1st and 2nd floors, with the old ground floor jail housing the office of Fife Historic Buildings Trust. The apartment has been sympathetically restored, retaining many period features. The rooms are furnished in keeping with the history of the building, while providing all the modern amenities you would expect.

Guestbook comments from the owner

''Had the pleasure of staying at Kinghorn Town hall for 3 nights. This is such an amazing experience and if you are in or around the area I highly recommend! We loved character of this place and it's such a nice change to staying in hotels. Everything we needed was supplied for. This will be certainly be our first choice on any returns to the area. Our stay was made all that sweeter knowing that the fees paid were going towards the upkeep of an important historical building known and loved by many in Kinghorn. Not to be missed!''

Notes on accommodation: There's a magnificent living/dining area on the 1st floor with floor-to-ceiling windows and 2 stone fireplaces, one with a gas-fired stove. A perfect space for the whole group to meet and relax. The carved, wooden dining table seats 6, and there are 2 large comfy sofas. Off this huge room is a well-equipped kitchen. The bedrooms are on the top floor. Bedroom 1 is truly unique with its wooden sleigh bed, exposed wooden beams and stonework, ‘port hole’ windows and the original bell housing. Bedroom 2 is a twin room with stone fireplace. Bedroom 3 is a single room for 1 adult. The bed is a ‘continental double’ and could accommodate 2 children if they were willing to share! The en-suite bathroom has WC, sink and rain shower. The main bathroom has a WC, sink and bath with shower attachment. Essential toiletries are provided. The bathrooms have heated towel rails. A washing machine/dryer is housed in a cupboard in the hall. This is a listed building so we can't allow pets or smoking Outside: Guests have exclusive use of a private walled garden with a table and chairs. Access to the garden is via a gate at the side of the property. There is also a BBQ for guests use. (Charcoal not included.) Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Freshly-laundered towels and Egyptian cotton bed-linen are all provided. The apartment will be cleaned ready for your arrival.

We had a wonderful time at Kinghorn Town Hall. We were pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of this property. We kept opening doors and finding one more room.

I would recommend this home to anyone wanting to visit the area.

I would definitely come back to this rental.

Thank you for a great time and your great hospitality.

Unique and Charming Accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five stayed here for a week in June, had a terrific time in Kinghorn, and enjoyed the use of the Town Hall in every way. Large, flexible, and spacious can be hard to find in the UK, but this rental is all three. Everything works, multiple bathrooms, laundry facilities, and even a walled garden for when the sun pops out. The hostess, Beth, was helpful as well. Thanks, we will be back!

Amazing property in lovely village

  • 5 of 5

Will definitely book again on a return trip. This flat had everything we needed, was an easy train ride to Edinburgh and the village of Kinghorn is so charming and friendly. Also being so close to the beach meant amazing sunsets and exploring. Being in a historical property just put it over the top.

Car: recommended

Kinghorn is a great base for exploring the many locations in Fife where the drama series 'Outlander' is filmed. Aberdour Castle, Falkland, Dysart Harbour and Balgonie Castle are only a short car journey away.

There is a quiet, sheltered beach only a few minutes walk from the apartment. At the other end of the village is Pettycur Bay - a long, wide stretch of golden sand which is excellent for walks and outdoor activities.

From here you will be rewarded with stunning views across the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh and The Lothians. If the tide is out, you can walk right along to Burntisland.

Kinghorn is 24 miles from Edinburgh and easily reached by road. Airlines that fly to Edinburgh from other parts of the UK include Flybe, Easyjet, Ryanair and British Airways. There are several car hire companies at Edinburgh airport. There is plenty of space for parking on the street outside Kinghorn Town Hall.

Kinghorn railway station is only a few minutes walk away and provides easy rail access to Edinburgh and to the north.

The nearest town, Kirkcaldy is 4 miles away and can be reached by train, car or bus.

Edinburgh - 24 miles

St. Andrews - 20 miles

Dundee - 35 miles

Further Details:

There are several shops on Kinghorn High Street, just a few minutes walk from the apartment. These include a baker, butcher, a Co-op supermarket, post office and chemist. There are also a number of pubs in Kinghorn. The Ship Inn opposite the Town Hall serves food, and there is also a ‘cupcake café’ on the high street.

A number of high-street shops and supermarkets can be found in Kirkcaldy which is 4 miles away.

The beautiful fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife such as Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem, St Monans and Elie are easily reached by car, as are the historic towns of Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy.

Kinghorn has its own railway station with a regular service that takes you across the famous Forth Bridge, straight into the heart of Edinburgh where you can visit the famous Castle, Edinburgh Zoo, Sir Walter Scott's Monument, the Scottish Parliament Buildings, the newly refurbished National Museum of Scotland or in the summer, take in a show at the famous Edinburgh Festival or military Tattoo. There is high-street and designer shopping on Princes Street and George Street, or you can enjoy the many bars, cafes and restaurants before returning by train to put your feet up in your ‘coastal retreat’!

There are plenty of activities to entertain families, whatever the weather, with play parks, a loch and ecology centre, indoor leisure facilities, and Kirkcaldy museum and art gallery all close by.
