About the property

Apartment in Kinghorn, Nr. Burntisland, Fife, Scotland

Built in the Tudor Gothic style, this impressive castellated stone structure enjoys glimpses out across the Firth of Forth. The Town Hall was constructed in 1826, replacing an earlier medieval building which was hit and seriously damaged by lightning. Part of the original building is thought to date back to the 12th century. Latterly it was used to provide the debating chamber, offices and prison cells for the Burgh Council. The new building was designed by the architect Thomas Hamilton (1784-1858) and was used for Council functions for almost 150 years but fell into disrepair in the 1980s. It was restored in 2009. Accommodation is on the 1st and 2nd floors, with the old ground floor jail housing the office of Fife Historic Buildings Trust. The apartment has been sympathetically restored, retaining many period features. The rooms are furnished in keeping with the history of the building, while providing all the modern amenities you would expect.

Guestbook comments from the owner

''Had the pleasure of staying at Kinghorn Town hall for 3 nights. This is such an amazing experience and if you are in or around the area I highly recommend! We loved character of this place and it's such a nice change to staying in hotels. Everything we needed was supplied for. This will be certainly be our first choice on any returns to the area. Our stay was made all that sweeter knowing that the fees paid were going towards the upkeep of an important historical building known and loved by many in Kinghorn. Not to be missed!''

Excellent.

We really enjoyed our stay in the comfortable, wel-appointed and quirky apartment. There was plenty of space for us all to do our own thing.

Lovely comfortable apartment. Huge and homely at the same time.

  • 5 of 5

The kitchen had everything you needed in the way of crockery and utensils. Beds were very comfortable and the bed linens were good quality. Heating and gas fire were so efficient at heating the huge space quickly, we often had it all turned off even though it was chilly outside.

Easy access to Edinburgh, we went 3 times on the train!

Would definitely book again if going back to that area and thoroughly recommend it, wonderful.

Marvelous location, great hospitality

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in late summer 2016 as a family of five (kids 18, 16 and 4 years old) exploring southern Scotland.

The apartment comprises the belle etage and top floor of historic Kinghorn Town Hall. It is a lovely combination of a grand room with 12ft high stucco ceiling, stone fireplace (operable with a gas oven), historic furniture etc., and modern amenities (three bedrooms, two bathrooms - one ensuite with a shower, the other separate with a tub, a kitchen fully equipped with oven, dishwasher, microwave etc.

It had been lovingly prepared by our host, not just linen and towels, but fresh flowers on the table, too, and even a loaf of bread and a bottle of milk. Speaking of provisions, there is a co-op store only 400 yards away that is open 7am to 10pm 7 days a week and a supermarket 2 miles away in Kirkcaldy open until 8pm on Sundays - so there is no need to carry food from far away even if you are arriving at an awkward time.

Parking a car is actually as easy as announced in the description. Edinburgh can be reached in 40 min, many destinations throughout Scotland are within reach by car (times given by Google routing are a bit optimistic, though, because it may prove challenging for a foreigner to fully exploit maximum permissible speeds on those lovely small country roads). Don't overlook the nearby sights of Fife!

We loved every bit of our stay and recommend this apartment to everyone.

The en-suite bathroom has WC, sink and rain shower. The main bathroom has a WC, sink and bath with shower attachment. Essential toiletries are provided. The bathrooms have heated towel rails. A washing machine/dryer is housed in a cupboard in the hall. Access to the garden is via a gate at the side of the property. There is also a BBQ for guests use. (Charcoal not included.) Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Freshly-laundered towels and Egyptian cotton bed-linen are all provided. The apartment will be cleaned ready for your arrival.
