About the property

Rural charm near lively Bastide towns. Enjoy privacy, your own private pool and large enclosed garden . Pets welcomed .Excellent kitchen and verandah with barbecue

La Maison Pastorale is a converted 18th Century stone farmhouse set in a quiet residential hamlet and is presented with:

Three double bedrooms each with a double bed.(a Z-bed can be provided on request)

Two bathrooms and a shower room and a large garden and private swimming pool. Broadband WIFI is provided for free.

The house has been renovated using traditional local materials with a sympathetic neutral colour palette to create a haven of calm. Quarry tiles cover the entire downstairs walkthrough areas with whitewashed stone walls and exposed old oak timber beams.

For musicians, there is a beautiful grand piano taking pride of place in the living room, together with an acoustic guitar and accordion.

For cooks there is a fantastically appointed farmhouse kitchen with a huge antique French oak refectory table, a Smeg cooker and fridge. We have left you with quality crockery and glassware enabling you to live the dream of a French country home without compromise.

For the more active we provide 3 mountain bikes, a rowing machine, badminton net and racquets, mini trampoline and a heavy boxing bag and some weights.

Upstairs we have painted floorboards and beams and again whitewashed stone walls and beams throughout. High standard cotton bedlinen and designer towels are left for guest use. The thick stone walls keep the house blissfully cool during the long hot summers.

The house holds a narrative of charm with a nod to the owners sense of humour- you will find antique furnishings punctuated with quirky vintage objects trove dotted about in unexpected corners...

Beyond the kitchen there is a large, delightful bamboo covered verandah set up for al fresco dining. At night outdoor lighting illuminates the terrace, pathways, walnut tree and swimming pool. Its a pure delight.

The large enclosed private garden has a full sized swimming pool with loungers and poolside sunshade. Several areas are set up around the garden with tables and chairs so you can take your pick at which to sit and contemplate. Spot the kestrels or listen out for nightingales song. Red squirrels, rabbits, hare, deer and the occasional wild boar can be sighted usually at dawn.

For the more active, there is a rowing machine, weights, badminton net, 3 mountain bikes, mini trampoline and a heavy punch bag. The garden being enclosed is perfect for dogs.

It's only a one minute walk to footpaths through the surrounding sunflower fields . The garden sits high on a hillside owning a perfectly stunning view of the summer sunsets. This is a very special place .

About Andrew

Anna and I share our time between the UK and France with our energetic Cocker Spaniel Margot. We both love gardening, music , cooking and travel a lot . Every year we upgrade the house and garden. In 2016 we installed a new bathroom and acquired a Smeg cooker and fridge for the kitchen . In 2017 we are focussing on the garden and pool area and have opened up the sunset garden view south west to the hills.

Andrew purchased this house in 2007

Why Andrew chose Saint-Eutrope-de-Born

We wanted a rural retreat but also love the mountains and frequently visit the Pyrennees as well as the coast at Archachon and in Provence. We wanted good transport links and the house is just over 5 hours door to door from London via Bergerac airport and a 2 hour drive to Bordeaux Airport. We also love visiting the châteaux and gardens of the Dordogne and Vezere rivers and the Lot and Garonne river valleys as well as occasional trips to Bordeaux and the Mediterranean beaches.

What makes this house unique

How long have you got ? Our favourites include

-a midnight swim in the pool

-Dinner under the verandah and our spectacular sunset view of the nearby hills

- Our daily walk around a nearby lake with the dog

- a bike ride along the canals of the Dordogne

- Dinner in the square either at Monpazier or Monflanquin or lunch at Penne D'Agenais

- Sunday morning visits to local antique markets ( brocantes) or boot sales ( vide ferneries) in small villages nearby

A Truly Delightful experience

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fabulous family holiday. The house is situated in a quiet charming hamlet not far from a couple of busy bastide towns and perfect for a relaxed stay. We loved walking and the children both used the bikes which were helpfully provided to explore some nearby country lanes. The pool was lovely and we all played the piano !!.

The house is charming ..cool in the heat and relaxing with lovely whitewashed walls and beams. The kitchen was brilliant with all sorts of herbs and spices left. A nice touch from the owners.

The housekeeper Victoria couldn't have been more helpful when we needed some help with our car and the booking and admin side of the holiday was very professional. We are hoping to return in 2018.

Some what disappointed

  • 2 of 5

With high expectations of a wonderful holiday destination we arrived to find a shabby sheak style villa, I'm afraid to say a little to "shabby". The pool was dirty and only cleaned 12hours prior to our departure home and the house was certainly not as clean or well maintained as it should of been.

Of far more concern was the lack of a pool alarm ( again, given we had young children and the pool was open to the garden ) , I contacted the owner and no replacement was provided during our 7 day stay ).

The property is nestled within a small hamlet of villas mostly owned by elderly residents who naturally appreciate the quieter life. Unfortunately, at the time of booking with the owner and notifying him of a young family, no mention of this was given. This annoyed me greatly, as a neighbour asked if the children could be quieter in the pool. Had i known of the surrounding residential status we would never of booked as we would not wish to offend with normal family holiday excitement that's to be expected from twin 7 years olds enjoying a pool ( as dirty as it was).

This left us living on egg shells and along with a generally poorly maintained property (given the price charged) left us rather disappointed to say the least .

We had several friends staying within the immediate area who paid considerably less and enjoyed far better properties maintained to a level to be expected at this price bracket.

Characterful and Charming

  • 5 of 5

The family has just returned from a very restful week at La Maison Pastorale. The property is very charming and packed with character, as well as offering generous accommodation. The beautiful garden is large and ideal for relaxing as well as the pool and shaded outdoor dining area. Overall a superb property and an ideal base for the Lot / Dordogne area

Highly recommended!

  • 5 of 5

Superb. A wonderful autumnal week spent in this fabulous house. Couldn't have wished for a more perfect place to be. Loved the house with all its lovely antiques. and curios. Very comfortable. Very clean. Excellent Internet. The rather excellent grand piano was played by my wife every evening. Great area. Equidistant to two pretty bastide towns with restaurants and supermarkets. Our dog loved it too, the garden is large and is securely fenced so Mungo was free to roam as he pleased. We have recommended this house to all of our friends and we are definitely be coming back next year. Thank you.

A wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of three adults and a dog. This house proved perfect for us. It's a charmingly eclectic and arty home full of intriguing things. Very well put together. We felt as if we were living in a home featured in Elle Decor! It was an extremely hot week so we made full use of the lovely pool and ate beneath the verandah every night. fairy lights everywhere! Very pretty! The kitchen is brilliantly equipped with everything you would need and a very generous herb collection left for our use - nice touch. The house was very clean and very comfortable. The owners were very helpful and their communication with us was very good. We could not find fault this holiday home. We didn't really want to leave! I'm sure we'll be back here.

Pastorale but disappointing

  • 2 of 5

Having rented holiday properties around the world for more than 30 years and enthusiastically reviewed on this platform in the past, we were looking forward to a week at La Maison Pastorale.

Booking arrangements were swift, efficient and reassuringly precise.

Sadly this was not to last. We had to prompt for directions to property and again for key safe number. The welcome pack consisted a carton of milk, a few tea bags (no coffee), a small baguette (no butter) and a bottle of sweet white wine.

The piano was splendid. Not shown in any of the photographs however

the house was stuffed with a plethora of religious brocante, plastic Gollums/ETs and exercise equipment. Various notices requesting that sun creams should be showered off before entering the pool would have carried more persuasion - particularly as regards young children - had a shower to been installed poolside as is the norm. We love the general area, but weren't impressed by this particular venue. A need to prompt for the late return of our security deposit, greeted by the excuse of 'traveling' and thus out of internet connection, merely confirmed our overall disappointment.

Owner's Response: We were shocked to receive such a bitter review out of the blue and disappointed that they would post such an inaccurate set of comments. This client emailed us complimenting us on our directions and holiday guide which they received nearly 4 weeks before arrival. Our house is precisely as shown in the images on the site ( including the grand piano !) so if it was not to their taste why book it ? We always leave our guests tons of herbs , spices and tea and coffee as well as wine, bread milk and biscuits but this seems not to have been enough for them. They left the pool is a disgusting state and we bore the extra costs of cleaning without comment. Hey Ho, I guess there’s always one !
