Maison de Ville in V les B on Canal-du-Midi & close to beach.

Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Oct-2016
Three bed house in Villeneuve les Beziers, Canal-du-Midi, Herault, Languedoc-Roussillon, 10 Min To Beac

The house provides comfortable accommodation for six people, there is one en-suite shower room and another bath room. The modern kitchen is fully-equipped with range cooker, dishwasher, etc. and has patio doors onto the cool enclosed courtyard which contains table, chairs and BBQ for al fresco dining. The kitchen is open plan with a lounge area and there is also a separate dining area. On the first floor along with two bedrooms there is a utility area with large washing machine. The second floor has a third bedroom and a roof terrace which provides a private sun bathing area and a pleasant place to enjoy an early evening glass of wine. The sunny, sandy Mediterranean beaches of Valras Plage, Serignan Plage and Portiragnes Plage lie just 10 minutes to the south, where beach bars, cafés, seafood restaurants, shops and all the glamour and glitz of summer in the south of France can be found.

The photographs do not do this property justice, the high standard of the renovation and the size of the property are amazing. It is ideally placed for the village centre and to explore the region. We loved it so much we didn't want to leave (What are the squatters rights in France?) We will definately go back next year.

Perfection

  • 5 of 5

Just a five-minute stroll from the pretty town centre, the three-storey house is a perfect base for this part of southern France. Its three roomy bedrooms are nicely furnished with two overlooking the courtyard and one (which has an en suite bathroom) overlooking the very narrow street to the front. The third floor sun terrace has the sun all day while the courtyard garden is cool and where we ate every single one of our breakfasts, lunches and suppers over two weeks. There is a large dining room but we never used it. There is also a second bathroom.

The living room - which has two large sofas - and the very well-equipped and spacious kitchen open out on to the courtyard. This is where we spent most of our time at the house, aside from sleeping.

There are enough books to fill a library and practicalities like endless hot water, fridge/freezer, dish-washer, washing machine etc. all worked perfectly.

There's a boulangerie about two minutes' walk away and two others little more than five minutes' walk away. There's a Spar shop, a couple of tabacs, a wine shop, pharmacy and a market for fresh food which comes two or three times a week. Several restaurants including two good pizza places, one on the canal, and the excellent Les Enfants Terribles on the town square, are delightful evening retreats and reasonably priced.

There's a huge Carrefour, including fuel, about five minutes' drive away.

The Canal du Midi, which flows through the town, is a real focus and its towpath makes for a fabulous cycle ride to the coast (around 10km) and of course it's all on the level. This takes you to Portiragnes Plage and, at the west beach, Les Voiles restaurant is superb. In the other direction and equally easy to cycle to is the big town of Beziers. A little beyond is the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Fonseranes with its famous nine canal locks. Further afield are easy drives to Narbonne and Montpellier. There are also other much larger (than Portiragnes) seaside resorts like Valras Plage and Serignan Plage. These have all sorts of different holiday amenities like funfairs, zip wires, go-karts etc.

One other great place to visit is the very pretty mountain village of Roquebrun for canoeing down the River Orb, always a highlight of a stay in Villeneuve les Beziers.

The house is great for couples or families and makes a fantastic base. I (and I speak for the others in our party) can't recommend it highly enough.

Location

From the Owner

We love the interesting history around the area and the fact that Villeneuve les Beziers is so close to the beach. We enjoy cycling along the Canal du Midi, and quite often cycle the canal path to the market and beach at Portiragnes Plage. Languedoc wine is very tasty, the sun shines and the seafood is superb! Its busy enough to feel like you're part of a crowd, but easy to find peace and quiet - either at the house or an extra 5 minute walk to a quiet part of the beach. Perfect!

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The beach runs for miles and miles along that length of coastline.

Portiranges Plage – lovely beach. You can cycle here along the Canal Du Midi, it also has a market twice a week. ( 10 minutes drive approx 10kms)

Serignan Plage - has good beach bars (as do they all!)

Valras Plage – very busy sandy beach, no rocks. Plenty of places to eat, kids play areas.

Grau D’Agde Plage – very nice again, although a further drive, (can be busy in the main summer months).

Travel:

Airports: Beziers Cap D'Agde: 15 mins; Montpellier: 1hr; Perpignan: 1hr 15mins; Carcassonne: 1hr 45 mins.

Car necessary if you want to tour the surrounding area, but it is perfectly possible to holiday there without a car, as Villeneuve has a small supermarket and you can cycle to the beach!

Facilities

From the Owner

The house is within a 5 minute stroll of the centre of town, which in the summer months has a permanent stage set up for weekend concerts .. so much fun! The cafes are friendly, the restaurants good and the mussels sold in the square on Sunday mornings are the freshest you will find! The house is deceptively big once you've opened the front door, and benefits from a wonderfully private courtyard overflowing with luscious green plants, and a roof terrace for bronzing away from any public gaze!
