Apsley Cottage offers the discerning traveler a truly memorable holiday with an incredibly warm homely atmosphere..

It's historical roots go back to 1906 when it was designed by Lilias, Countess Bathurst, and it has a strong link with the Arts & Crafts movement that held its heart in Sapperton. Ernest Barnsley's daughter lived at the cottage for many years in her retirement.

This beautiful Grade 2 Listed Cotswolds Cottage was personally re-designed by the current Countess Bathurst, and no expense has been spared with the comfort of the traveler in mind.

From the sumptuous furnishings throughout, to the gentle decor, everything has been chosen to offer tranquility & calm - where every visitor will feel totally at home from the moment they step through the door.

Sleeping up to 6, this idyllic little cottage has a whole list of luxurious details, even down to the Eco-friendly ground sourced heating system keeping the house snug, & the water piping hot.

The open plan ground floor has an incredibly well equipped modern kitchen, (microwave - cooker - washer/dryer - excellent utensils and cooking equipment - dog bed - dishwasher etc), a utility room, and an open plan dining room and sitting room, with plush furnishings and a lovely log burner.

Upstairs, there are two incredibly comfortable double bedrooms, and a single bedroom with the possibility of a further pull out bed.

The bathroom is spacious with a P-bath and wall mounted shower (newly installed during Autumn 2017).

The gorgeous enclosed garden offers a safe space to play and relax, with a terraced barbecue area, & ample off road parking space.

About Lady Bathurst

Married to The 9th Earl (Lord) Bathurst, it's an incredibly busy life being at his side, running our Stately Home, Cirencester Park, helping to run the 15,000 acre estate the family has owned in the beautiful Cotswolds since 1695 - as well as the many charitable organisations I'm lucky enough to be involved with. Married since 1996, I've always felt that to manage holiday cottages would not only enhance the area, but add a different perspective to the running of The Bathurst Estate. It's never been done before & is now my pride & joy. Among my many interests, we have 5 very spoiled dogs & we also run an arable farm, as well as a small herd of organic (rare breed) Gloucester cattle.

No two days are the same here, & we love to share the estate with whoever is interested!

Why Lady Bathurst chose Sapperton

Apsley Cottage has been part of The Bathurst Estate since it was designed in about 1906 by Lilias, Countess Bathurst, who was married to The 7th Earl Bathurst.

Sapperton was an important part of The Arts & Crafts movement, most notably the designers Sidney & Ernest Barnsley & Ernest Gimson lived in Sapperton itself. (As an added note, Elizabeth Barnsley, daughter of Ernest, actually lived in Apsley Cottage for nearly 50 years..)

The 7th Earl was impressed by their designs & provided the materials and labour in order that they may build several important properties on the Bathurst Estate, a number of which still remain in the village to this day.

As the first holiday cottage in 320 years on The Bathurst Estate, Apsley Cottage heralds the beginning of a new era for Cirencester Park.

What makes this cottage unique

Staying at Apsley Cottage, named by the present Countess after the 2nd Earl Bathurst who was raised to the peerage in his own right before he became Earl, you are surrounded by history as well as stunning countryside.

While the cottage maintains many of it's original features, it stands apart from other holiday lets because of it's gorgeous furnishings, personally chosen by The Countess, the attention to detail in every comfort, and the warmth & cosiness of this little house's atmosphere.

The visitor can't help but feel immediately at home - not just because of the underfloor heating (sourced by eco-friendly ground sourced heating system) but also because of the carefully selected decoration and furniture. A real home from home, as all our visitors have commented on. So much so, many return year on year to enjoy the warmth and comfort of this unique Cotswold treasure.

The Butlers (Nov 13): What a wonderful cottage! The best we've stayed in. The decor is tastefully done, & to a very high standard. Very cosy! The welcome hamper was a lovely touch. A return trip is definitely on the cards!

The Bishops (May '13): Beyond a doubt, one of the loveliest & most welcoming cottages that we've ever stayed in (& we've stayed in a lot!). From the warm welcome on arrival, the basket of delicious local goodies, the cosiness of the rooms, to the complete attention to detail that cannot do anything but make any family feel at home & relaxed. This is a very special place. Thank you for all you've done to make us feel so welcome. Our children also made some lovely friends on the village green.

Children: All ages are very welcome & the cottage lends itself to a perfect family home. A high chair/cot are available on request. Dogs: Up to 2 beautifully behaved Labrador-sized dogs are very than welcome. (Any more, or larger, please enquire first.) We do ask that they do not go upstairs (the dogs, not the children!) and do not climb on the furniture. (Small surcharge of £25 per dog is applicable). There is an excellent hose outside the back door that will wash off any muddy paws.. Or toes! Plenty of dog towels provided too. There's even a special spot for the family pet, we've included an exclusive dog bed area in the specially built & designed kitchen, so they can spot any 'cooking spillages' at once! (Or enjoy their Welcome Basket chewy bones in peace..) Outside: The garden surrounds the cottage and the large stone south facing 'sunken' terrace, with ample outside lighting, is accessed via double doors from the kitchen/living area - or the kitchen - or the front door! Complete with Cotswold Stone built-in barbecue, there is also a large table with six chairs and an umbrella, as well as a wooden garden bench that overlooks the garden and village countryside. Magical! The Garden: The garden is well fenced, or has a solid Cotswold stone wall to the front - this means that, with the gates closed, Apsley Cottage enjoys a complete boundary. Car Parking: There is ample parking for up to three cars. Utility Room: Washer & dryer, stand alone freezer, iron & ironing board, sink, cleaning essentials & dog towels for muddy paws! Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels & Egyptian cotton bed linen included. All the beds, pillows & duvets are anti-allergy. The property is cleaned once a week. If staying more than one week, there will be a thorough service with fresh linen at a time convenient to the guests. Extra housekeeping can be arranged for a small fee. Other: The dining room is spacious, yet cosy, seating up to 8, sideboard, cabinet & desk in which there are plenty of local guides. Carpeted throughout both dining room & living room. Leads onto the hall & then the kitchen beyond.

Lovely renovated cottage in a beautiful setting.

Beautiful and well-cared for property and grounds. Well thought out reno and update to the building and we loved the beautiful and well-appointed kitchen.

Very comfortable stone patio area which we enjoyed using at every opportunity. Staff very professional and happy to assist during the booking process and when we needed some help during our visit. The only possible negative is that the steps leading to the upper floor are twisty and narrow but we enjoyed them as part of the charm.

We enjoyed the short walk through the village to the local pub, The Bell.

Changeover Day:
Preferred changeover day is Friday. But this can be arranged at other times if the cottage is available. Short breaks are also available from Friday - Monday (or Tuesday). Week short breaks are from Monday (or Tuesday) - Friday (3 night minimum)

Notes on prices:
Please note that at certain times (i.e. Christmas/New Year), the prices may vary due to those periods being 'Peak Season'. At these times we accept bookings for complete weeks only & are unable to split them into short breaks.
Other times of the year are subject to the normal seasonal price changes (Winter - Spring - Summer - Autumn).

  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
