About the property

Villa near Cognac, Charente, Poitou-Charente - Fully Equipped And Comfortable Family House With Private Heated Pool, In The Heart Of Cognac Country

Maison des Vignes is set on the edge of a village surrounded by vineyards, in the lovely Charente valley. It is an old stone house and dates from the 1800’s but has been well modernised inside while retaining period features. It is equidistant between the beautiful old town of Cognac, 10 minutes away, and the charming riverside town of Jarnac, both with supermarkets and shops. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a downstairs cloakroom, separate sitting and dining rooms, wifi broadband and a heated (May until end September) private pool. The walled garden is south-facing and very sunny, with some trees for shade, and a large terrace on which you can enjoy a leisurely meal. The pool is 7 x 3 m and has wide steps for sitting and is a uniform depth of 1.5 meters, it is ideal for lounging in and floating. For more energetic swimming there are large public pools in Jarnac and Cognac, just 10 minutes away, and the clear, shallow waters of the Charente are also used for swimming.

About Rosemary

We bought the house five years ago with the intention of moving into it permanently when we can retire, which is still a few years away. We have decorated and equipped it as our own home, which is why the kitchen has just about everything you need! We love spending time there, and find it relaxing and peaceful, and particularly enjoy the pool, especially now it is heated. Whenever we go there, with family or friends or on our own, we always find new places to visit and new things to do.

Because of jobs it isn’t possible for us to spend many weeks there each year, though we do visit about every 2 months, and after doing some upgrading such as a new patio we decided to let our house for a few summers. We have been really pleased with our guests’ response to the house and the area.

Rosemary purchased this villa in 2012

Why Rosemary chose Charente

We searched for a long time, starting a bit further north in Vienne, but deciding we really preferred to be surrounded by vines rather than cornfields. Our main criteria were that the house should be in a village and within easy reach of facilities, that it should be old but renovated, south-facing and with a pool. We are just 10 minutes from the lovely old towns of Cognac and Jarnac, and that has been so valuable to us.

There are so many places to explore, whether it is chateaux, brocantes, markets, the Charente, the coastline, Roman sites, La Rochelle and the lovely Ile de Re, and much more.

What makes this villa unique

The house, garden and pool are very private and are bathed in sun all day, but there are some trees to give shade. The pool is heated, and a delight to lounge in and for sole use of the guests of Maison des Vignes. There are shops just over a mile away, and in 10 minutes you can be in one of several supermarkets, and some excellent restaurants.

Secluded, well equipped house in quiet village

  • 4 of 5

Garden well maintained, clean and tidy. House has everything that you need. Good pool - local English contact sorted glitch with its heating. Short trip to lovely nearby towns of Cognac and Jarnac. Pretty walks/cycles/boat trips along the Charente river. Only downsides were very limited shop in village and, as we were out of season (May), we had to travel a bit further for activities.

Fenced pool a good safety feature. Also darts, basketball, boules and other games in the property to entertain all ages.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I’m glad you liked the house, garden and pool and enjoyed visits to nearby Jarnac and Cognac and the Charente river. The village is only 2 km from the next village of Nercillac which has a butcher, baker, general store, pharmacy and restaurant, and 10 minutes by car from several supermarkets. There are many activities only 10 minutes away at the Base de plein-air André Mermet which are open from April to September with free access.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Rosemary and John's home in Reparsac is perfect for a quiet and private holiday. The house is very comfortable and spacious with everything that you need. We especially appreciated the pool - the best we've ever used on holiday! The location is also perfect for visiting Cognac and the surrounding areas - we found some lovely places for lunch.

I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone, and I can that it would be fantastic for families as it is very private and secure.

A quiet retreat for a lovely family holiday.

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely family holiday and all of us enjoyed the very spacious, clean and well equipped house and gardens. The photos do not show how large the property is nor how big the gardens.

The pool was a welcome space to relax and play and was used every day. All was safe and secure which meant we could all relax.

The house must be one of the most well equipped we have stayed in and this made everything easy. We could eat out on the patio everyday, shops were close by to stock up on fresh food.

We would recommend this house. The owners were very helpful and responsive before we went and answered any questions promptly.

Excellent property overall but some minor issues

  • 4 of 5

This really is a fantastic property which looks better than in the photos. It has everything you could need so all you need to buy is food. The gardens are beautiful and large but there is a minor issue with the hole in the lawn where a shrub/bush has been dug out and not filled in which could be quite dangerous if you accidently stepped into it. The lawn area was also very uneven which made it difficult to play on.

The pool area is excellent although it does need some TLC as some of the patio slabs and pool edging are loose.

The deck tiles which made a path from the pool to the patio were uneven and some of the slats were loose which again could be dangerous unless you are extra careful.

Inside the property is excellent although I was very disappointed with the quality of the showers and the fact there were no toilet roll holders. Also, the internet has a fair usage policy so if you have lots of tablets/phones and you download a lot of stuff, be advised. It didn't affect me but it is worth knowing before you go. If you have a dislike for chickens and cockerels, been warned there are a few surrounding the property so you will not get complete peace and quiet.

All of these things are very minor details but it stops me giving a five star rating as that would mean it was perfect.

Rosemary was very helpful and understanding when we had a minor issue on our return home and is very prompt with her communication.

I know it sounds like I am being negative but I am just being honest.

Owner's Response: I’m glad you liked the house, garden and pool and thought it is a fantastic property. I will ask our property managers to address the minor issues with the loose slabs around the pool, and to complete filling in the very small hollow where a shrub has once been. The hole has been there since we bought the house 4 years ago and I must admit I never thought it could be an issue. Similarly, the lawn is not suitable for bowling, but our property managers keep it well mowed and I think is what you would expect to find in a rural French garden. The wooden deck tiles we have used to make a path to the pool gate - we will replace any that have loose slats. I'm pleased you thought the interior was excellent. I will put in some toilet roll holders as you suggest, but you don't explain what you meant about the showers. They are not power showers, but they have been fitted recently, have new shower heads and hoses, and the baths are wide and have ample glass screens. There are chickens and cockerels in nearby gardens, but they are not noisy at night and cannot get into our garden. I think it would be impossible to find a French village without them, and I suggest most people would agree that they contribute to the charm of this type of holiday location.

A beautiful property, with lovely pool and well equipped

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic holiday at this property. Communication from the owners was excellent and the listing was accurate. The house and particularly the kitchen were very well equipped. There were plenty of sun loungers and parasols for shade. The house and garden were clean and tidy and very well maintained. There was a very comprehensive folder of tourist information and guest information about the house.

We enjoyed lots of time in the pool, as we had lovely weather. We enjoyed a day at the beach in Royan which was about an hour and a half drive away. We recommend the tour of the Hennessy Cognac tour, in Cognac including a tasting session! We felt at home with the request to water the flowers in the hot weather and our little boy was quite excited about helping out!

The bottle of wine on arrival was a lovely gesture!

A wonderful family holiday in a house that was a home from home. We would certainly recommend it.

Thank you Rosemary and John.

Well equiped, spacious and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

A great house in a lovely quiet and private location. Very spacious, clean and comfortable with all you will need for a great holiday.

Rosemary was so helpful throughout, especially when a thunderstorm knocked out the phone line/internet access. Nothing was too much trouble and every communication was answered in full promptly.

The weather wasn't great (I don't think Rosemary's influence can quite stretch that far!!) but with the pool heated we still managed to have a dip.

Loads of info in the house on the local area, highly recommend the Remy Martin tour in Cognac (they run at least one a day in English) and the Auchan has amazing choices of meats, cheese, bread, etc.

Overall a great house, location and host. Highly recommended.
