Harmony Cottage, a lovely family-friendly Cornish cottage in a great location

Overview

Property

Updated: 13-Nov-2016
Cottage in Lostwithiel, Nr. Fowey, Cornwall, England

Harmony Cottage is a spacious and airy cottage, that dates well back into the considerable history of the charming town of Lostwithiel. The cottage has all the charm of a cottage but the comfort of modern furnishings and décor. It's the ideal base from which to enjoy the best of Cornwall, and the perfect cosy retreat to return home to at the end of a day of enjoying the sights of Britain's most beautiful county. And you can bring your pet along too, because Harmony Cottage is completely pet-friendly (subject to a few necessary terms and conditions). There are a host of walks nearby as well as many pet-friendly attractions you and your four-legged friends can visit. And with a delightful town on your doorstep, including superb restaurants serving fresh local food, a selection of pubs, a fantastic fish and chip shop, a bakery serving traditional Cornish pasties, there couldn't be anywhere better to complete your Cornish experience.

About the Owner

We're Johnathan and Claire Routledge. We bought Harmony Cottage after falling in love with the area on a holiday there ourselves a few years ago, with our dogs Lily, a border terrier, and Olive, a greyhound.

We love staying in Lostwithiel, and find the local community incredibly welcoming, something all our previous guests agree with. We live in Bristol, but have relatives nearby who can help out should you need them in an emergency.

Lovely cottage in nice location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the cottage as a base for walking a section of the coast path. The cottage is homely, nicely decorated with comfortable lounge and bedrooms. Kitchen is spacious and adequately equipped for basic cooking.

After a long journey we were surprised at the narrowness of the road and cars behind meant we couldn't stop to unload. However another circuit back to the cottage left us free to stop and there was plenty of parking available a very short distance away by the river. This seemed to be available whatever time of day we returned. The day we were leaving was the start of Lostwitiel festival and it may not have been as easy.

The cottage is well served with games but there was a notable lack of tourist information and basic Cornwall tourist map. Not a problem for us but something we like to browse generally.

There is no wifi in the cottage but mostly good phone signal from vodafone. Data download was slow and wi fi would be better for our needs but if you don't need Internet its fine.

As a location for touring Lostwithiel is excellent. It's a nice town with shop, cashpoint and eateries a short step away. It's near a main road so getting about is easy and it seems well served by buses and trains.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review and we're glad you enjoyed your stay. Just a note for future guests, there is a lot of tourist information, leaflets, maps and guides, in a drawer in the living room. They're not on show unfortunately due to the number of them. There is also a guest book with lots of tips and suggestions of places to visit. Tessa, sorry you didn't find them on your visit.

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Harmony Cottage with my husband and three small children and we had the most amazing time. The cottage was absolutely beautiful and there was more than enough room for all of us. It was immaculately clean and very well equipped. It is situated in the village of Lostwithiel and everything that we needed was on our doorstep. We were lucky enough to be there for Carnival week and we really enjoyed the street party and all the events that were set up in the village. Lostwithiel is a perfect Cornish village with a fabulous river running through it (which the children loved to swim in) and there's even a castle. It's a great base from which to explore more of Cornwall (I particularly liked Fowey which is just 5 miles away), and there is a train station just a few minutes walk from the cottage so you don't even need a car.

I loved Harmony Cottage and Lostwithiel and would love to go back one day. Highly recommended.

Harmony cottage

  • 5 of 5

Prior to our visit the website for Harmony Cottage was great and provided all the information we needed. When we arrived, the cottage exceeded our expectations, had everything we needed, was clean and tidy and in a great location with parking nearby and a shop just a stones throw away for all your essentials. The owners were very helpful in giving us all the details we needed such as directions, information about the local area and what to expect at the cottage. The location was perfect for exploring all of Cornwall, and is very close to theEden Project which we visited twice during our stay and a lovely river walk for walking the dogs! Would definitely recommend!

We found peace at Harmony Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a wonderful week at Harmony cottage and already can't wait to go back. The cottage was cosy, clean and lovely and had everything we needed and we wanted for nothing. Brilliantly situated in the middle of the village, but in a quiet street we could easily pop out for a walk by the river and to the nearby shops. Lostwithiel was friendly, not too touristy - (which meant cheaper fish and chips and pasties...yum) and most importantly we could get to so many places with ease. We visited lots of local attractions and towns and none took more than 20 minutes in the car, or could easily be cycled too as well. It really is a wonderful and beautiful part of the world. All in all, we were very impressed and happy and were sad to come home.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a fantastic week staying in Harmony Cottage in Lostwithiel. The cottage is very spacious and comfortable and is situated right in the heart of the town, so fantastic for exploring the surrounding area. There are some great places to eat within a couple of minutes walk from the cottage for breakfast, lunch and dinner, though the cottage is fully equipped if you want to eat in. Parking is free in the town, and within a couple of minutes walk from the cottage. The river running through the town is very picturesque and is popular whether you enjoy walking, picnicing or canoeing. We will definately be returning.

Location

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Harmony Cottage is close to a huge number of beaches and coves. The guest information booklet in the cottage provides details of a selection of the best nearby beaches, including several that are dog-friendly, along with details of how to reach them.

Distances:

Harmony Cottage is just 5 miles from the beautiful seaside town of Fowey, 5 miles from the Eden Project and 20 miles from the popular fishing village of Padstow, no name just a few of the must-visit towns and attractions in the area. The guest information booklet provided in the cottage is packed with suggested places to visit and nearby attractions.

Further Details:

Lostwithiel is a fantastic base for a trip to Cornwall. It offers both the quiet seclusion you'd expect in a Cornish town, but with the convenience of being ideally positioned on the London to Penzance train line, and with quick road access to the A30 and A38 - meaning you can spend less time travelling and more time discovering Cornwall.

The town of Lostwithiel offers everything you could need during your stay. As well as beautiful scenery and nearby walks, there are some wonderful pubs and a selection of fantastic local restaurants right on your doorstep, as well as some fabulous independent boutiques for you to explore. There are coffee shops and a friendly, welcoming local community who will make you feel at home during your visit.

Nearby the town of Fowey (pronounced Foy) is a fantastic place to visit. The town boasts an excellent selection of quality shops and galleries, many exhibiting local works. And it's a great place to sample the local cuisines - be it a pint, a cream tea, fish and chips, a family meal or a gourmet dinner for a special occasion, there is something to suit all tastes.

Very near to Harmony Cottage is the Eden Project - a must-visit eco attraction. Just five miles away, energetic visitors can cycle and take advantage of the reduced prices for anyone arriving on foot of by bike. And if cycling is your thing, the Camel Trail is a spectacular cycle route that runs through Lostwithiel, and is a fantastic way to see more of the area.

The National Trust's Lanhydrock is just four miles from the cottage. A magnificent late Victorian country house with gardens and wooded estate, it's a fascinating place to explore. In Lostwithiel, you can also visit the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery, a haven for gardeners that supplies plants across the UK, including to Highgrove and other Royal estates. Its fantastic shop and cafe are both well worth a visit.

Being close to many waterside towns, there are a host of water-based activities nearby too.
