Waterside house in Polruan Nr. Fowey, Cornwall - Wonderful Views Across River Right On The Beach. Pubs And Shops Nearby

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR 2015. The house will be closed from 14/9/15 to the end of the year for building / construction works. We will be open again for the 2016 Season.

Right on the water's edge, the house is available throughout the year for holiday lettings. The large balcony is ideal for relaxing on long summer evenings. Private steps gain access to the sandy/shingle beach below at low tide. Public steps at the rear lead down from West Street to the house. All bedrooms have harbour views looking up the Fowey estuary.

Tommy's was built in 1981 and designed around the challenging requirements of a waterside property , with salt water literaly lapping up to the front door (on occassions !) . Our aim was to creat an airy modern feel at the waterside with low maintenace in mind. The house's architect designed building specification included an 18" water impervious seal around its base to withstand the threat of rising high waters and flooding.

Certainly this winter 2013/14 with prolonged gales force winds and South / South Westerley winds creating large swells within the harbour, put these defenses to the test. Fortunately the house fared well, but inevitably with these prevailing conditions at the completion of our busiest season in 50 years of Polruan lettings, there has been some wear and tear.

We closed the house for three months at the start of the year and have employed during this time local trademan to refurbish the down stairs with all new bedroom furniture, completely new showeroom, decoration throughout and all new floor coverings. We hope the new improvements will be well received by our returning clients and appreciated by those coming to Tommy's for the first time this year. Our rental stays this same this year with no increase to charges.

Please note

The months of November , December '14, January , February and March '15, the house will be closed for further refurbishments / improvements.

We will however be open in between for an Xmas and New Year let if requested. The house will re-open on 1st. April 2015 (or 2nd. if you are superstitious! ).

Outside: Outside is patio area adjoining waterside with barbecue and steps that lead the beach. Utility Room: Utility room has washing machine and tumble drier. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen is provided, please bring your own towels. House is cleaned on changeover days (Fridays).

We had a great two weeks here.On entering, 'Oh, look at the view!' the main room having wide patio doors looking over the harbour, from Polruan quay, to farmland, and Fowey. We felt that the owners care about comfort, with good beds, plenty of seating,attractive decor, lots of kitchen equipment,storagefor outdoor stuff/bike, & a helpful caretaker. It's great for access to the sea if you bring or hire a boat, or for children with crabbing lines. There was not a garden as such, the outdoor area being a concrete yard, with a picnic bench & barbecue. It got more sun than the balcony. A gate opened to the steps to the water and at low tide, the seaweedy foreshore. By Polruan quay, a short walk away, is a small sandy beach at low tide. Otherwise, Readymoney Cove is about a 20minute walk from the passenger/cycle ferry disembarkation point in Fowey, or the fabulous Lantic Bay, a wonderful walk for about a couple of miles along the coast path and down steeply to the beach. So if your main aim is a beach holiday, this might not be ideal, but there are many super walks, always something to look at in the harbour & lots of historical interest & beauty. Polruan is a delightful, friendly village, two good pubs serve food, & there is a tea room, well-stocked village shop, & a post office.The absence of lots of trinket shops, and the presence of steep,narrow lanes, seem to stop the village getting over-busy, and it is so relaxing to explore around without lots of traffic. The other side of this, is that it is not possible to park near the house, so be prepared for a steep walk to the car park; travel light! We enjoyed not using the car, there is so much to do without it. A lovely house.

A tranquil break at Tommys

I have visited Tommys in Polruan a number of times and will continue to visit for as long as I can! The house is warm and welcoming, with homely decor and comfortable furnishings. The lounge looks out over the harbour towards Fowey and invites you to sit on the relaxing recliner chairs whilst you look over the peaceful waters. The house is surrounded by wonderful views, whether you are out and about in the Village or just sat on the house balcony. The kitchen is modern and very well equipped, it too has a view of the water. The bedrooms on the lower floor also have views of the harbour and are incredibly comfortable . The shower room is beautifully decorated and the shower is ace, especially after a dip in the sea! Tommys offers a tranquil atmosphere that's calm and serene.

There are a few steep hills and climbs around Tommys, so it's not for the faint hearted but once you have settled inside the house, you will be far too comfortable to leave!

You can park above the village and walk down to Tommys, which can be tough at first but you'll forget as soon as you see the brilliant views! It's a lot easier to leave your car, worry free, and walk or take the passenger ferry to any surrounding areas.

Watersports is obviously a big attraction of the area, but walkers and those just wanting a lazy time would feel at home here. We have modernised the house internally over the past 12 months and have had some favourable feedback. In the future we intend to focus on some updates to outside areas / facilities.

Fabulous house that we visit every year

Tommy's never fails to work its magic on us. The position is un-paralleled being in the much more "real" Polruan but over-looking Fowey. We always do the Hall Walk, and the coastal path in both directions. The kids adore the trip to Lantic Bay - well worth the climb! The house appears to be improved every year - this year it is new beds in all rooms which are super comfortable. The house has everything you need and is clean and well maintained. The place is perfect for kids - there is hardly any traffic in Polruan because of the steep and narrow streets to they are able to run free in a way that is sadly impossible at home. We can't recommend it highly enough.

A great detached house in a beautiful setting. Amazing to wake up every morning with beatiful views of estuary. House would benefit from modernisation and renovation and i wouldnt even mind paying extra for it. House was generally a bit grubby on arrival and majority of furniture was tired and needs to be replaced with new. floor coverings also required. New Bathrooms suites needed. Storage heaters did not provide enough warmth and again need to be replaced by central heating. However, that being said, tommys was functional and Dud provide everything that we needed such as all necessary kitchen appliances and WiFi etc. We did enjoy our week in Cornwall but did not realise the extent of poor vehicular and pedestrian access to property, and did not enjoy carting kids and luggage up steps and walking a mile to the car park everyday. Will bring luggage on wheels next time or a skateboard. Although , one could say that the narrow sreets are a small price to pay for the charm that this brings to polruan.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for your feedback. Tommys is currently undergoing a 3/4 year rolling upgrade, and whilst we accept downstairs needs modernising (phase 1 ) will start this winter, upstairs with the new kitchen and furniture in the lounge is of a high standard. Heating is also being renewed . The streets and access to the house are as you say not ideal, but polruan was never designed with the modern motor car in mind, and as you say part of the charm of the village and magic of the house when you get to it , is all worth it. A great place to get away from it all

Spent a great week at Tommy's. Handy for lots of things to do and plenty of walks for the dog! Visited the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Mevagissey and local beaches. Wonderful views from the lounge - always something to see. Could spend a lot of the holiday not getting in the car at all. Recommended.
