Welcome to Hidden Valley Holidays....!
Coombe Farm is a property of grand design, combining the charm of historic stone barns, with contemporary internal design and modern facilities. The property has a south facing aspect; a sunny and sheltered courtyard overlooks the small trout stream in the valley below. The property offers spacious accommodation, with high vaulted ceilings and cosy log fires in the living room, dining room and kitchen Teak flooring with beautiful Persian carpets give the place a luxurious feel throughout and the heated indoor pool and 12-seat cinema room are popular with guests of all ages. The living rooms offer great communal space while the layout of the bedrooms provides a high degree of privacy for all guests. Our guests have free access to the Farm, which is home to a small flock of friendly White Faced Dartmoor sheep and a heard of Devon Ruby Red and Galloway cows. Behind the barns, up the hillside, we have planted a 150-tree cider orchard - all traditional West Country varieties - and 5 vineyards comprising over 22 000 vines - Pinot Noir, Bacchus, Pinot Gris, Madeline Angevine, Pinot Noir Precoce, Chardonnay and Ortega. Our winery building is now complete, ready for our first commercial harvest in 2017.
Coombe Farm offers very spacious accommodation for 12 plus 2 babies (in the cots we can put-up wherever you like). Sleeping accommodation comprises 3 very large double bedrooms and 3 twin bedrooms. For another couple, we can offer adjacent Vine Cottage, a luxurious fully equipped one-bed house - please see listing E18568 for full details.
We live close to Coombe Farm, in the original farmhouse, just along the valley and we have busy careers that take us away overseas for much of the time, but we love to return to the tranquillity and beauty of Coombe Farm in South Devon where we can recharge and relax. We really enjoy the rural environment at Coombe Farm - great wildlife, cliff top and moorland walking, sailing and fly fishing...
Lance Whitehead purchased this barn in 2012
Coombe Farm is located in a beautiful hidden valley in the South Hams district of South Devon equidistant between the Coast and Dartmoor - both less than 30 minutes away.
The place offers real peace and tranquillity; the only sounds are the birds and the occasional calling of our Grey Faced Dartmoor sheep and friendly Red Devon cows, and the trickle of a small trout stream running along the valley - no noise from cars or aircraft - it is almost like England 70 years ago.
The House is surrounded by its own 64 acres of arable land - with 22 000 vines and a cider apple orchard together with plums, blackcurrants, damsons, planted extensively across the property
Salcombe, Dartmouth, the River Yealm and Dartmoor are close. Plymouth, Totness and Exeter are also within easy reach, as the A38 only 5 minutes' drive away.
We spend most of our time here enjoying the privacy, peace and beauty of the valley within which the house is situated, looking after our farm.
The property is a perfect blend of old and new - converted about 5 years ago from a group of traditional stone barns Coombe Farm has been transformed into a spacious modern home offering a fully-equipped large Italian designer kitchen, comfortable living and dining rooms, a 12-seater cinema, and a bedroom layout that offers a high degree of privacy, whilst being close to all the shared facilities.
We love the heated indoor swimming pool, that opens into the courtyard. We enjoy the many activities locally - clay pigeon shooting on our land, fishing, riding, canoeing, sailing and surfing - all can be arranged for our guests.
"Ideal for a large three generation family group. We could not fault it and any suggestions for improvement would border on the absurd" September 2012.
"Excellent property there was something for every need from entertainment, comfort and even down to kitchen utensils. The whole family thoroughly enjoyed this property, and our dogs. Thank you very much, we didn't want to leave!" February 2011
"This is a beautifully finished property, very secluded and in a picturesque setting. I would say that this was best suited for adults and families with older children" May 2011
Property is to a high standard, excellent facilities, wonderful location. There was so much space that even with 14 of us, it never felt crowded. We all felt we were able to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Easy reach of great beaches. Lance is a fantastic host, very keen to check all is ok and help with anything you need. Would highly recommend.
A fabulous week at Coombe Farm during the grape harvest ! Lance encouraged us to view the 30 acres on foot, and we duly complied, seeing the vineyards at all their stages of development. Oh - and I almost forgot the accomodation - in our 15 year experience of renting large properties in Devon, we have never met such interesting and welcoming owners, and the house manager amazed us with tips and local knowledge. Perfect for our group (aged 3 months to 90 years) a very warm and comfortable house, especially during the winter months. Coastal visits to Burgh Island and the Pilchard, and a shopping trip to quirky Modbury are a must, and golfers will love the course at Bigbury-on-Sea. Walking from the house - we met Lucy, the owner of Shilston House, where they host Devon Archives talks. Would not hesitate to revisit, except we like to go somewhere new each year. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Judy
We booked this as a last minute get away for the family before the end of the summer holidays and were delighted with the choice! Clean, tidy and well maintained the property was surrounded by breath taking views as far as the eye can see of well manicured farm land and vine yards.
Lance was hugely welcoming and always eager to assist beyond the call of duty - even when surrounded by 5 small children as he got on with his duties!
The kids loved it, the adults loved it, the cinema room was a great bonus, and the heated pool was spot on! This location is ideal for large groups / famillies who just want to get away and relax, the decor and facilities were spot on. I can not recommend this place enough, we will most definatly be putting it on the short list for a return visit in the near future! Superb - thanks Lance. (Nic Leigh and Family)
Previous review should have been 5 star but I submitted it from my phone and it went a bit wrong! (Along with the sausage finger spelling)
Beautiful house, loads of room for us all, set in a stunning setting, off the beaten track. House & cottage nice and clean, Lance and his team were all very friendly & helpful. Upon their recommendation we visited the White Hart in Modbury for a celebration meal and it was fantastic!
We hired the house and the cottage together, we were three generations and it suited all our needs. The pool and cinema room came in handy when the weather was against us and there were lots of lovely places to visit nearby.
Coast/Beach:

The sandy beaches of Bantham, Bigbury-on-Sea and Thurlestone are less than 30 minutes' drive away, and the nearby natural harbours of Salcombe and the River Yealm offer sheltered waters for sailing and other watersports. Surfing at Bantham is excellent and equipment can hired locally.
