About Beverley Condick

We live and work in England but have had our house in France since 2006. We chose this area specifically because of the high hours of sunshine this area enjoys and the proximity to beaches and the wide range of activities it allows - not to mention the food and wine!

We have a 15 year old daughter who has enjoyed many holidays here with us but due to school and exams we find ourselves being unable to enjoy the house as much as we would like at the moment - hence our decision to rent. We felt it such a shame that the house is not enjoyed more. All of our friends and family who have spent time with us at the house agree that it is in such a perfect location.

Beverley Condick purchased this house in 2006

Why Beverley Condick chose Mortagne-sur-Gironde

Mortagne sur Gironde is one the most striking of the few picturesque ports ,dotted down both sides of the Gironde estuary.

It's advantage over most of the others is the added benefit of a small selection of Restaurants and access to a few shops, that mean you don't have to leave the Port if that's your desire.

The tranquil location is a perfect base for exploring this fascinating area of South West France.

What makes this house unique

Oysters, mussels and wine.

Beaches, rivers, countryside

Far enough south to enjoy good weather and not too far if you want to drive.

One hour from both Bordeaux and La Rochelle Bergerac, is under 2 hrs.

Great cottage . . . great location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was spacious, comfortable, and had everything that we required. A really nice place to return to after being out for the day . . . although we did just chill out locally for a few of the days! It was warm and sunny almost every day and so we made good use of the deck with its table and chairs and canopy of grapes!

We really enjoyed the location. Strolling around the port/marina, a regular visit to La Cabane (almost next door) most evenings for a drink, and the several restaurants all within easy walking distance. We also very much enjoyed watching the activities around the slipway which is close to the drive of the cottage.

We visited the lovely beaches at Meschers and also made a visit to Royan . . . to remind us of a stay we made many years ago! A visit to the Citadel at Blaye was a great day out with pleasant walks around the village contained within the 'walls'. Talmont 'old village' was the other visit we enjoyed. On the way back from Blaye we briefly called at Port Maubert . . . another lovely port.

We had a great holiday and hope to return!

Lovely stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in Mortage, which is a fantastic location, close to great beaches on the Gironde (Royan, Meschiers etc). The cottage was perfect for our stay, just the right size, finished to a good specification, and with really nice rooms. It was very clean and I'd guess it's all fairly recently fitted - the remote ceiling fans in the bedrooms were very welcome.

There are some fantastic family bike rides to be enjoyed in the area - flat, segregated from the traffic, and through some really pretty countryside - in addition to more challenging routes for the more experienced road bikers. We were also lucky to see some stunning wildlife, with different birds of prey hunting in the nearby fields (black kites, eagles and, we think, at least one kestrel).

I'd recommend this property to anyone, there's a good chance we'll be rebooking for another visit soon!

Lovely cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in Mortagne, it is a beautiful little town with everything you need for a relaxed holiday and is driving distance from beaches and good day trips (Cognac is particularly recommended). The cottage is well located, only minutes from the bars, restaurants etc but is very quiet. It has a lovely private garden and is nice and cool inside on a hot day. We would definitely recommend this property.

Super house in a great location - very pretty

  • 5 of 5

We had a super week at the house in Montagne and would absolutely recommend. We are a family (children age 1.5 and 7.5 when we were there) and the layout and location was super. We could stroll out and buy fresh croissants in the morning or have a coffee and there are a nice selection of restaurants dotted around the picturesque small harbour. So pretty. The children liked looking at the boats and there were a family of ducks and ducklings. There are a couple of greens where children were playing games and our older child could join in.

We could easily get to our favourite beach in Meschers Sur Gironde (free parking too!), and there is a lovely market most days there. There was a kids club on the beach which was ideal for our 7 year old – we didn’t need to pre-book and could choose if he went for one hour or longer. Otherwise it’s a safe and family friendly beach with lifeguards – as it’s on the estuary you don’t get those massive Atlantic waves that makes it less relaxing if you’ve got children. We went to Talmont which is very picture postcard, a bit of a tourist haven but very nice – gorgeous shops and restaurants with nice views and an interesting church.

There’s lots to do in the local area but equally you’d be happy staying in Montagne as it’s relaxing and has great facilities.

We liked the layout of the house and it has shutters and two big fans in the bedrooms which really cool you down. We liked the fact that the kitchen is integrated with the living room (very big) so that if you are cooking you aren’t isolated from everyone.

Thanks so much for a lovely week and we hope to book again.

Quiet and lively !

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic ...lovely quiet sleeps ,with all the bustle of a lively quayside right outside.

A morning cuppa was much enjoyed over the road on the sunny bench ,with WiFi and the locals to keep us entertained.

Property is as other reviewers have stated ,we would add that it is ideally placed for visits to Cognac and St-Emilion, to name but two lovely day trips .

Great access to numerous bike trails and local rambling.

Best meal enjoyed just up the road at Le Port Bar/Restaurant .

We would not hesitate to recommend to friends .

Further Details:

Mortagne sur Gironde is divided in two by a limestone escarpment. The lower level around the port is referred to as 'La Rive' and the upper as' La Bourg', reached via a road cut through the escarpment. From here there is a viewing platform with spectacular views across to the Medoc.

In the Bourg there is a butcher, 2 boulangeries, a Coop, bank (with cashpoint), a pharmacy and a church.

In the port itself are 'cabins' selling fruit & veg, bread, seafood and more.

3 restaurants with outside seating plus an open 'Cabin' (daily specials, snacks, bar) with seating on the grass overlooking the port (see picture)

Sailing hire and courses are available in Port Maubert (10 min drive),Meschers & Royan. Sand yachting at St George.

Kayaking is available in the port and at Monards (15 min) and Mornac sur Seudre (40 min).

There are 2 'Go Ape' type parks (20 & 35 min-photo)

Horse riding is available a short walk from the port.

Opposite is the Monolithic 'Ermitage' (on the 'Camino de Compostela')

The estuary is popular with Ornithologists (avocets, curlews, plovers, storks, egrets and many others.)

The Chateaux of the Medoc are accessible via two ferries at Blaye and Royan, or routing through Bordeaux.

The local draft Pineau de Charente, an aperitif made from grapes is available everywhere locally.

Talmont is a pretty village on a promontory into the estuary, with a Romanesque church.

Near Talmont is the Moulin du Fa, a recently excavated Roman town and port with an excellent visitor centre.

You can explore the magnificent Roman amphitheatre and other remains in Saintes (nice shops too! 45 mins), or the Medieval tower in Pons. At Blaye you can explore the huge Napoleonic citadel.

West of Bordeaux is the Arcachon Basin and the Dune de Pilat, 90 mins.

The Loire valley, Sarlat, Bergerac, cave paintings at Lascaux etc. approx.2 hrs

The Spanish border is 2.5 hrs (we often return to the UK via Santander)
