Beautifully restored fishermen’s cottage in Appledore, North Devon

Overview

Property

Updated: 23-Nov-2016
Full of character and equipped with all modern conveniences. 3 or 4 bedroom option available

Nestling in wonderful Irsha Street, this 200-year old fishermen's cottage is recently restored, retaining many period features including exposed beams and historical fireplaces. It is comfortably furnished and fully equipped with all modern equipment. This cottage offers home-from-home retreats for couples and families.

Irsha Street runs along the shore of the estuary, so you can fall asleep to the sound of the sea lapping the slipway. Despite this peaceful location, the cottage is only minutes away from local amenities, including several charming pubs, restaurants and shops. Appledore's delightful alleys and lanes reveal a rich heritage and lively cultural scene and its beach is famed for its crab fishing and watersports. It is also ideally located for exploring North Devon.

The cottage can be booked as a three or four bedroom option. Prices displayed are for the three bedroom option, please enquire about the cost of the additional bedroom.

To the rear of the property are enclosed gardens, which can be used for al fresco dining (the kitchens cater fully for home entertaining) and relaxing in the sun.

The cottage is equipped for younger guests with travel cot and bedding, high-chair, changing mat, step-up stool for bathroom, small cutlery and a selection of games and family DVD's.

SORRY, NO PETS OR SMOKING.

About the Owner

My name is Holly and I work as a teacher, carer and mum of two.

I live in the Warwickshire but try to get down to Devon as often as possible to unwind in our lovely cottage which I re-styled. The peace and tranquility of the cottage, together with all the home comforts that are on hand, never fail to recharge the batteries, whatever the weather!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Beautiful Cottage with lovely views over the estuary and some lovely walking. Maritime Museum very good. Friendly locals!" The Fletcher Family, Leamington Spa.

"What a fortnight! Slipway Cottage served us beautifully. Our first impression surpassed our expectations even though we had seen several photographs. As the days ticked by our appreciation of the meticulous renovation grew. An abundance of natural and reclaimed materials skill-fully assembled. As seasoned self-caterers, this is one of the best we have stayed in. Thanks Holly". The Payne Family, Middlesex

"Lovely Cottage. We really enjoyed our stay here. We had a lovely time, relaxing and enjoying the area - we went to Clovelly and Bude and hired bikes on the Tarka Trail. The kids really loved the cottage and area. Definitely want to return!!! Thanks for a lovely stay." Aylett Family, Leicester.

Catboat Cottage - a hidden Appledore gem

  • 5 of 5

Catboat Cottage is a gem of a house hidden away in Irsha Street, Appledore. It is well appointed and was very clean on our arrival. Tardis-like, it is larger than it would appear from the outside with four bedrooms and two good-sized living rooms- perfect for a family that doesn't want to be on top of one another. Our fortnight stay corresponded with glorious weather which allowed us to have breakfast on the terrace each morning, overlooking the rooftops of Irsha Street, towards the estuary. We gave up dieting and just tucked in each morning!

The location of the cottage is central to Appledore being equi-distant from the quayside and The Beaver pub. Cream teas and good food were never far away. Similarly, Appledore itself is only ten minutes from "The Big Sheep" which is a lovely theme-park for families with younger children. Alternatively, it is only about half an hour from tremendous walks around Hartland Quay on the coastal pathway. Spectacular views abound!

Overall, our stay was brilliant and we'd warmly recommend this property to others.

Location

From the Owner

I first visited Appledore 21 years ago with my parents and immediately fell in love with the place. I vowed that one day I would return with my own children. We first bought Catboat Cottage, which had just been fully renovated, and made it into the holiday home of our dreams - a cosy and beautiful retreat a little off the beaten track. We wanted a seaside retreat that was a home from home. Too often in the past had we experienced self catering accommodation that wasn't comfy or cosy. When my children were small, taking a break away was a little like moving house so we wanted to equip our cottage as fully as possible for our younger guests so that Mums and Dads don't feel like they need a holiday once they've packed and unpacked!

Coast/Beach:

The attractions of the estuary are a stone's throw away from the cottage. The quay hosts competitive crab fishing and a number of water sports, and at the historic lifeboat end of the the village there is a great choice of rock pools with some fascinating marine life waiting to be discovered (as well as some delightful waterside pubs!).

At high tide, the local ferry will take you over to Instow, which is home to an extensive sandy beach.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Bristol or Exeter. The nearest train stations are Taunton Parkway or Barnstaple. Appledore has sufficient amenities so that if you don't want to leave the village you don't have to, and everything is within easy walking distance. There are some wonderful attractions within 15 minutes of the cottages which you would need a car to visit.

Further Details:

Appledore has a post office which offers cash withdrawals and a delicatessen which stocks plenty of local produce and freshly baked goods in the mornings. There is also a Londis that is well-stocked with the essentials.

As well as a lovely tea room, cafe and chocolate shop, there are some great gift shops and art galleries, many in private homes belonging to the artists themselves.

A number of locally owned restaurants are available, including a fish and chip shop so popular that you will almost certainly have to join the queue!

For such a small village, there is a surprising number of pubs! Each has its own character and many host live music.

Strolling through the narrow streets and alleys of Appledore reveals its shipbuilding and fishing heritage, more about which can be learned on walking tours offered by local historians. Although off the beaten tourist track, the village boasts a lively cultural scene, including an annual book festival, and many of the resident artists offer workshops. The historic lifeboat station regularly opens for tours as well.

If you wish to go further afield, as well as the many attractions, the pannier markets of the nearby towns of Bideford and Barnstaple are really interesting; originally based on the idea that you bought to market to sell whatever you could fit into your basket.

For large-scale shopping, the main supermarkets are all within thirty minutes' drive. Bideford is the nearest town for the high street banks and cash points.

Facilities

From the Owner

We stay at the cottage at every opportunity, throughout the year and whatever the weather. There is nothing quite like waking up to seagulls yarping overhead, seeing the swallows swooping through the narrow streets and hearing the sound of the waves lapping up the slipway. Spacious Catboat Cottage (nicknamed the Tardis) is perfect for the whole family, great for a family to spread out and relax or for extended family to join them; the downstairs bedroom is a great retreat for grandparents. The estuary and the beach are magical: no two days are the same. Depending on our mood, we can relax by the fire or in the garden, stroll around the village, or explore the many nearby attractions, knowing that all the comforts of home are with us.
