About the Owner

I live only 2 miles away from the cottage in the nearby village of Thornhill with my partner, Andy, and our recent addition, Bonnie - the cockapoo! I retired a couple of years ago from my post as head of faculty in the local FE college and decided to incorporate my love of restoring old properties (our own home started out as a holiday cottage renovation, and we loved it so much we moved in!), with the need to earn some income! We bought Boggle Dyke 3 years ago, from the local Buccleuch Estates, and as you will see from some of the pictures, it was in need of lots of attention! It's a listed building - built in the late 1800s, by the local Duke to house his farm workers. We have completed renovated the cottage, whilst still retaining its character and charm (I hope)

A little gem of a cottage, ideally proportioned for a couple

  • 5 of 5

First impressions of Boggle Dyke, a one-bedroomed end terraced cottage - very spacious, tastefully renovated and decorated; home-from-home in terms of up-keep, facilities, comfort and cleanliness. The log burner, when lit, added to the ambience of the cottage.

We stayed for short break, not really long enough

Lovely cosy cottage

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay here and we enjoyed it all the more for being able to take our dog along too, who settled in right away. It is a great location for walks and is a short drive to some local shops.

The cottage itself was cosy, very clean and well equipped. Yes there is no internet available however we didn't really feel it was necessary for a mini break away. There are also some handy manuals under the TV to look through to help with anything you might need.

We thoroughly enjoyed the cottage and hope to be back soon.

Gorgeous little cottage, comfy bed!

  • 5 of 5

We came as a couple, with our 3 little dogs.

The cottage was lovely, really clean and tidy, and we really liked the fire being lit on an evening!

Excellent to have an enclosed garden, although our dogs were so little they could nearly fit under the gate! (easily sorted with a piece of wood!)

Some really lovely walks right outside the door, and lots of things to do a short drive away.

Being a young couple, the only thing we missed was WiFi!

The bed was amazing!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the lovely review. I appreciate the lack of Wi-Fi and have looked into this. I'm considering this for next season....just need to balance this with additional costs I would have to charge. Would like your comments on that!!

So glad we found this lovely cottage, spotlessly clean and lovely to relax there after a day touring. The bed is wonderful and ensures a really good nights sleep. The location is ideal for touring this part of Scotland.

Comfortable cottage in great location

  • 4 of 5

This is a little gem of a cottage in a small village, about half an hour north of Dumfries. The cottage is well appointed and the bed is exceptionally comfortable and capacious. Although it is small, it is adequate for two people. The renovations have been carried out with some clever space-saving features. There is good parking and a small backyard for sitting out on sunny days (we were lucky to have plenty of those). The surrounding district has some great walks and many historic sites. Alison was exceptionally friendly and helpful, and our months stay went very quickly. Highly recommended for a relaxing break in beautiful countryside.

A gem of a cottage

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the cottage in the late evening and it was wonderful to walk in and find that we had hit on a little gem of a cottage. Everything was fresh and clean and well maintained. The bed was extremely comfortable which ensured we had a truly relaxing holiday.

We soon settled in and the little garden at the back was secure and a godsend for our 3 little dogs.

We found there were plenty of places to see and lots to do. We were particularly taken by the story of Robbie Burns and his family who moved to live in Dumfries.

All in all we had a lovely few days break and would recommend Boggle Dyke Cottage to any couple as it provided everything that we needed and more.

Location

From the Owner

Andy and I bought Boggle Dyke Cottage because we know the area so well, living just 2 miles away in Thornhill. I'd be attracted to it for some time, and having viewed it, we realised it needed so much work to bring it back to life. It's in an ideal location for travelling either north or south, or west through a beautiful National Park to the shores of the West of Scotland, and further, to Ireland. Within minutes you will find yourself off the beaten track and enjoying breathtaking scenery, either in the car or on foot Its very accessible, and a lovely walk from the shops or pubs of Thornhill. Just as accessible, are the world renowned mountain biking trails within minutes of the cottage, or some fine salmon and trout fishing, available in the nearby river.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

There are many beaches to access from the cottage and the nearest would be around 35-40 minutes driving.

Travel:

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are 1 hour away, with Prestwick airport being approximately 45 minutes distance. Car hire is not essential, since the cottage is on a variety of bus routes, but for any sightseeing etc, in this part of Scotland, a car is usually advised

Distances:

The nearest village which has a post office, banks, pubs, shops, supermarkets etc is Thornhill - a little under 2 miles away. 20 minutes away, is Dumfries which is the biggest town providing a 24 hour Tesco and other normal high street stores you would expect.

An hour away by car you have the choice of the contrasting cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow

Further Details:

Locally, this area of Scotland is renowned for its natural habitat - whether for birds, other wild life, salmon and trout fishing in the local rivers, or for the more energetic, mountain biking in the 7Stanes world renowned network of cycle tracks, or equally as attractive, road biking on some of the most scenic roads around. Walking is a very popular pastime, and I would be happy to advise on some local and slightly further afield walks available
