About the property

Cottage in Penmaen, Gower Peninsula, Wales - Peaceful Location In The Heart Of A Working Farm, Boasting Panoramic Views Of The Countryside

The Old Mill Cottage is a converted corn mill finished to a high standard. Sitting approx 1.2miles from the main road this cottage really is in the middle of the countryside. The only engine your likely to here is the farmers tractor, all other noise belongs to birds singing or farm animals calling. The farm has cattle, sheep, geese and chickens so plenty to see and do. The Old Mill has two gardens one of which is private which includes BBQ area, also ample parking for numerous cars. Little Walterstone farm sits in the middle of Cefn Bryn (common land) so is perfect for those who enjoy walking, mounting biking, bird watching, horse riding (Cefn Bryn is on the bridle path, you can bring your horse, no stables available however we can offer grazing in a private field backing onto the Cottage) or just exploring the beauty of the Gower Peninsula. Little Walterstone Farm is only 1.5miles from the nearest beach, 2miles from a choice of two local pubs and 2miles from the local shop.

Here at Little Walterstone Farm we have 98 acres concentrating on sheep and cattle. We converted The Old Corn Mill into this holiday cottage in 2012 to share the beauty of the countyside. The owner of the farm is Newton Woollacott aged 68 and still working hard! However with the trials and tribulations that come with running a working farm he has to have help. Which is where i come in, my name is James Tregoning i'm 33 and married to Jade and we have a two young sons. I've been on the farm since i was 6 and worked the farm for well over 18 years. In that time together Newton and I have promoted the farm no end! 3 large new barns, stone walls that could rival Hadrian and of course we built the Old Mill cottage. Newton has asked me to manage the cottage on his behalf.

Notes on accommodation: Please remember The Old Mill is situated on a working farm, so everyone is expected to behave responsibly around machinery and animals. Please also note that there is no place like the Gower when the sun is shining however we are susceptible to the odd shower, when this occurs the countryside and farm can quickly turn very muddy, so don't forget your Wellys and rain coats. The area around the cottage and parking is gravelled. Outside: Outside The Old Mill we have two lawned gardens, one is large backing up to the cattle yard with a high wooden fence giving you privacy and offering you a BBQ area with Garden table and plenty of chairs. The other elevated garden pokes out onto the farm yard giving you centre stage for the comings and goings of the farm. One day you could see the farm machinery coming through or a gaggle of geese honking there way past. Another day a flock of sheep may be rounded up and brought up for shearing. Everyday there a plenty of chickens to admire and feed if you want. Utility Room: The Old Mill doesn't have a utility room however if you need access to a washing machine and tumble dryer the farm house is at hand. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The Old Mill provides both beds made up and four towels on arrival. We do not replace towels or linen for the remainder of your stay. There is no maid service as the cottage is self catering and the property is cleaned before and after every guest. Other: The Old Mill has Four entrances to the building, the lounge and both bedrooms have private entrances, the main entrance leading into downstairs corridor has area for coats and shoes plus muddy Welly rack.

lovely cottage on the moorside

  • 4 of 5

Lovely cottage. James and Jade were very helpful and friendly. Lots of animals around! Lovely setting on the side of the moor- great place to take the dog for a walk! Very near the beautiful beaches of Three Cliffs Bay and Oxwich. Would definitely like to stay again!

Warm welcome, great location if you are looking for seclusion.

  • 3 of 5

We stayed on the farm for four nights over the half term holiday. On our first evening we climbed the "Bryn" passing through a herd of cows and horses to discover an incredible view of Oxwich and the Three Sisters Bays. Breath taking. The coast and the location were the main reasons why we chose the farm for our stay. A few chickens pecking around (kindly donated us delicious eggs) and a couple of dogs. Views were of working farm mechanics and storage barns as opposed to the beautiful countryside that surrounded the farm.

Cosy cottage.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is warm and comfortable, very clean and well equipped, lovely quiet location, close to beaches with plenty of interesting walks. Absolutely loved staying here, friendly welcome from the owner along with a box of eggs from the free ranging chickens on the farm, would highly recommend it.

Lovely secluded property on working farm.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and myself were looking for a 4 night break on the Gower which was quiet but fairly close to beaches for our old Collie and the Mumbles. We found this detached 2 bedroom barn conversion at Little Walterstone Farm and liked the isolation but with the modern , tasteful conversion of this rental.

It is in the middle of a real working cattle and sheep farm and some of the action happens right outside the lounge window.

The farm collies are incredible to watch when working.

There are also chickens wandering around outside and we were given some fresh eggs by James as well as some of his home grown vegetables.

The route to the farm is up a half mile stone track which is a bit bumpy in places but OK if you take it carefully . The walks start right outside the farm gate and you get a fantastic panoramic view of the beaches from 3 Cliffs bay to Oxwich from the top of the hill which is about 10 minutes gentle climb. Oxwich and Port Eynon are about 15 minutes drive away and the Mumbles about 20 minutes drive.

Warm rooms , well equiped nice compact kitchen, good sized lounge, Internet wi-fi worked well, safe farmyard parking .

Lovely cottage conversion inside and out and you can do as much or as little as you want.

Absolute silence and completely dark at night.

Brilliant getaway from it all break.

Pretty little conversion in a quiet location

  • 4 of 5

Down a mile long drive (you need a 4x4 honestly), you find this pretty little conversation quietly tucked away to the side of the farm house. This isn't Llangennith, it Penmaen. Miles away, but this is a better location . Great Base for walking with views of 3 of the golden sand bays of Gower ( 3 cliffs, Oxwich and Rhossili,) all from the hill top opposite this property. Ideal for a picnic with views on a sunny day. Beach is walkable within 2-3 miles. Endless tracks where you rarely see another person. Beautiful walk from half way along drive onto the Gower way, through woodlands which comes out in Parc woods and the Gower heritage centre, where you can refresh with coffee and baked goods from heritage bakery. Gorgeous. Crossing Road and picking up signage back to Penmaen. About 4-5 miles in total . But back to cottage. Enclosed back garden which would benefit from access direct from holiday let rather than having to go outside front and round the rear of property to access garden. I appreciate planning restrictions stop doorways being made, but would benefit. Has one bedroom upstairs and one on ground floor. Bathroom by each with shower, not bath.. Small kitchen to side of dining/ lounge room. Vinyl floor throughout. pleasant and practical. Friendly owners. Saw little of "working farm" evident. Being from farming background, we had expected to see more farming action. Few chickens and sheep dog within farm yard, plus free range sheep, horses and cows beyond farm gate, but you're not in middle of full milking set up here - which most would probably find overwhelming, anyway. So maybe this is enough for most. House is very warm. In all this was a great little holiday, possibly more so due to weather. Would recommend a trip to perriswood archery and shooting down the road 3 miles. Cost £24 for 2 hrs archery and shooting for our 12 yr old. She was well pleased. Then we stumbled on The Valley in Bishopston. Excellent pub with floor boards and atmosphere, packed at 6.30 on Friday night. Takes dogs inside. Beautiful food. Well worth trip. Found on returning from mumbles, where we discovered verdis, twice, and the horsebox seafood outlet on seafront. All excellent. Superb quality at all. What an excellent and memorable holiday all round. We'll be back next year.....still loads more walks to do and pubs to fall into after a days trekking. For food, of course.

Special interest holidays:

For those people who are looking for a holiday with bird watching, walking, horse riding, cycling, surfing, painting and fishing then The Old Mill on Little Walterstone Cottage is the perfect place for you. Everything listed can be obtained right on the cottage doorstep ( fishing and surfing would require a 25 minute walk or 10 minute drive ).

The Gower Peninsula has numerous amounts of award winning beaches dotted around, since it was awarded the first area of outstanding natural beauty in Britain it has become a Mecca for those who love sand, sea and surf. The nearest beach to The Old Mill is 1.5mile walk to Nicholston beach or 2mile walk to 3 cliffs bay ( recently picked Britains favourite view by Cathrine Jenkins ). If you drive you have the option to go to any of Gowers beaches as Penmaen is very central.

We recommend you hire a car or bring your own as we are 1.2 miles from the road. Swansea has an airport but our nearest commercial airport is in Cardiff approx 55 miles away

The coast is a 1.5 mile walk over countryside and the nearest pubs are a 2.5mile walk in either direction or 15 minute drive. Our nearest amenities shop is also about a 15 minute drive.

Further Details:

We advise doing your food shop before you arrive as the nearest supermarket is a 30 minute drive, however remember not to buy eggs as your on a working farm! Plus play your cards right and the very generous farmer may make his vegetables available from his extensive vegetable plot. The nearest bank is again a 30 minute drive and there are plenty of restaurants in and about the Gower.
