I retired to France in 2006 with my dog Travis, we love the space and the peace of the countryside. I enjoy gardening and walking and the wildlife. Spring is my favourite time of year with nightingales, cookoo, hoopoe and of course the swallows return, the air is full of the sounds of nature. There are plenty of walks or quiet roads to cycle on and not to far to go for amenities. For my family when they visit plenty to see and do and a good place to relax. I like it here I hope you do too.
Eileen McKew purchased this house in 2006
I moved to this property in 2006 with my border collie Travis and now reside in nearby Saint Romain. The area is reminiscent of the Cotswolds with it mellow limestone buildings. I love the quiet roads and lanes, the abundance of wildlife and the glorious fields of sunflowers during the summer. Although it may seem remote, the nearest town is only 10 minutes by car and the nearest boulangerie, auberge and village shop 10 minutes by bicycle. If you want the sea and beaches, a day trip is possible to La Rochelle and its surrounding coast, taking an hour and a half by car. There are many places to visit around La Garde, Vallee des Singes, La Cormeniers and a fantastic maze formed by maize. Futuroscope, historic Poitier, Angouleme and Cognac are not too far for a days outing.
Hugh and Michelle Blackburn commented that the house was comfortable and well equipped, children loved the climbing wall and plenty of space for games.
The Taylor family found the house well equiped, loved the pool and climbing wall and found the area around very suitable for cycling with the family on the quiet roads around.
Hannah and Richard Marshallsay and their 3 little girls on their second visit made similar comments.
This year was our third annual stay at Eileen's lovely barn. The reason why we keep coming back is that it is perfect for families. The house is well equipped and the children love the pool and new climbing wall. The location is lovely with lots of things to do and places to visit locally. We can't fault it and would highly recommend the barn to anyone.
We have just returned from a wonderfully relaxing 2 week stay in Eileen's Barn. The barn is very comfortable and well appointed, and the summer kitchen is such a relaxing room to relax and eat in....we had all our meals in there!
The garden is very spacious - we had a badminton court set up, swing ball and plenty room to throw the rugby ball about. The new pool is great - the kids loved it, and so did the dog.
It is very rural and peaceful. The pub in Blanzay is very welcoming, and the food is excellent. We cycled there - 2 km. The boulangerie is excellent there also.
Very handy for Monkey Valley, Oradour sur Glane, Futuroscope, and many other local attractions. Go to the pub at the start of the holiday - Gavin and the other Patrons will tell you where to go/what to see and make you welcome.
Eileen is the perfect hostess, and will look after you thoroughly...and if you want a good blether, Terry will oblige.
We highly recommend the Barn, and will return one day!
We were delighted with our stay in Eileen's lovely restored barn. The location is quiet and peaceful surrounded by beautiful countryside but not far from lovely French towns with good restaurants and markets. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the gorgeous barn has lots of space, a nice big pretty garden and the children loved the swing and swimming pool. Eilleen was very welcoming and helpful and made a real effort to ensure we enjoyed ourselves. We would highly recommend the property and also this area of France.
