Diane and Vaughan offer all our guests a warm welcome to our farm which is set in 12 acres of delightful Derbyshire countryside. Nestled in the quiet valley of the River Dove just south of the pretty market town of Ashbourne and several hundred yards from the inspirational birthplace of Handel’s ‘Water Music’ and Anna Sewell’s ‘Black Beauty’, is Oldfields Farmhouse with its barn conversions of Handel’s Muse and Gorsey Hayes. Formerly part of Snelston vicarage, the farmhouse was built in 1828 and designed by Cottingham (the father of Gothic Revival architecture, teacher of Pugin and designer of Snelston Hall and its ‘chocolate box’ conservation village, just down the lane). Our lovingly restored barn and mews are a mixture of contemporary and antique country furnishings offering a fabulous opportunity to relax in idyllic and secluded surroundings. High quality fittings, furnishings and decoration throughout make Oldfields an ideal destination to relax and enjoy the countryside.

This lovely converted threshing barn maintains its ancient beams used in the original 17th century timber frame. It has a contemporary kitchen featuring cooker, fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster, dishwasher and washer/dryer. There is a four poster bedroom on the ground floor with an en-suite shower/wet room and extra wide doors to facilitate a wheelchair.

The large, cosy lounge houses a 19th century stone fire surround, natural stone flooring, knotted oak beams, coal effect fire and a 36 inch screen TV with DVD. Upstairs there is a super kingsize 7ft bed (which splits into 2 x singles) in one bedroom and a kingsize bed in the other bedroom. Flatscreen TV/DVD players and radio/IPod docks are in all bedrooms.

The second bathroom contains a Jacuzzi bath, matching Jacuzzi suite and free-standing shower.

Outside, with lovely views of our fields up the hill, there is a large private patio and lawn. A gym and table-tennis table are also available for guest's use in the grounds.

Staying in this property, close to where our daughter was getting married, complemented the wonderful weekend. We were warmly welcomed by the owners upon arrival and nothing was too much trouble for them, both this and the adjacent one bedroom cottage were immaculate and as advertised, fully equipped and tastefully decorated. On the morning after the wedding we invited friends and family to join us for brunch, a dozen cars and 30 plus people were comfortably accommodated in the spacious and perfectly maintained grounds. Unfazed, the owners simply asked if we would like more chairs, we gratefully accepted. Everyone who came remarked on how beautiful it was, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be recommending these properties to anyone who wants to visit this delightful part of the world.

My family and I stayed at Gorsey Hayes for a much needed three day break. I cannot recommend this accommodation enough!. It is one of the finest places I have had the pleasure to stay. Diane & Vaughan made us all feel very welcome, the facilities are second to non too. Our 7 year old daughter had an amazing time as did the rest of us. We will definitely return for another dose of Ashbourne hospitality.

Relaxing break away in the Dales

We had a idyliic and restful stay - the cottage was absolutely wonderful and the pictures didn't do the property justice.....very tastefully decorated - all mod cons! Diane was very hospitable - lovely scones awaiting us on our arrival, coffee, tea and milk in abundance - a wonderful restful stay!!! Will definitely return again!

We moved to this property early in 2012 after searching the midlands area for a lovingly restored country property with grounds and accommodation facilities. We fell in love with the place as soon as we first drove up to it and have felt at home ever since.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : East Midlands at 30 Miles Nearest Golf : Ashbourne at 5 Miles Nearest Train : Uttoxeter at 10 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Ashbourne at 4 Miles Car: necessary


Due to the rural location and lack of local bus services a car is really essential (unless you're avid walkers or cyclists!). The nearest train station is Uttoxeter (20 minutes drive away) but for mainline services you will need to go to Derby (30 minutes drive away). The nearest airport is East Midlands, approximately 30 miles, or 45 minutes away by car.


The picturesque village of Snelston is a short 10 minute walk away. The market town of Ashbourne is 3 miles away and this is considered to be the doorway to the Peak District with many places of interest. The popular attraction of Alton Towers is only 3 miles away.

For high street shopping and all major outlets and services Derby is 20 minutes drive away.

Further Details:

Ashbourne is the nearest town, with a Marks and Spencers, Waitrose and Sainsbury's for provisions, and a Barclays, RBS and Nat West for banking. There's plenty of good pubs and restaurants in the surrounding villages.

Some of the more popular local attractions include:

Dovedale’s stepping stones appear on thousands of post cards and the area attracts a million visitors a year. Keep away on sunny weekend afternoons.

Ashbourne (founded by the Saxons) is one of Derbyshire’s finest old market towns, combining a medieval street pattern and historic buildings with a wealth of high quality shops. Lying in a lovely green valley on the southern edge of the Peak District, the town attracts many visitors who come to enjoy a scene which has changed little in appearance since the 18th century. The cobbled market place, hidden alleys and yards are a delight to explore, and the wide and elegant Church Street is considered to be the finest street of Georgian buildings in Derbyshire.

The Tissington Trail runs along a 13 mile route from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay. Surrounded by beautiful countryside the traffic-free trail is ideal of horse riders, cyclists, naturalists and walkers. It is suitable for wheel chairs and pushchairs along the flat sections.

Tucked away in the Peak District’s wild rolling hills lies the Tissington Estate which presides over a quintessentially English village, complete with duck pond and village green. There are a number of interesting shops here, as well.

Escape to the fabulous world of the Alton Towers Resort – there’s so much going on, the fun never stops! As good for the big ones as well as the little ones. Great swimming open all year in a palm tree oasis.

Chatsworth House has a stunning backdrop, adventure playground, lovely gardens, great walks and farmyard fun – certainly a 2 day visit when linked with beautiful Baslow (and its village trail) only next door. Enjoy afternoon tea in the Devonshire Arms, or Lupo’s Italian Restaurant.

Booking Notes:
Reservations will only be secured on receipt of a Booking Deposit of 25% of the total holiday cost. Deposits can be made by direct payment into our bank account or by cheque. A Good Housekeeping Deposit of £100 for Handel’s Muse or £150 for Gorsey Hayes will also need to be paid, in addition to the balance of the total cost of the holiday, 6 weeks prior to the date of arrival.

Changeover Day:
Our preferred change-over day is Friday, but we are happy to consider any other arrangements that may better suit our guests. Accommodation will be available from 4.00 pm on the day of arrival and we request that guests leave by 10.00 am on departure day.

Notes on prices:
Prices quoted are for full weeks, however we are happy to consider a minimum stay of 3 nights in some circumstances.

  • Notes on accommodation: For those wishing to explore the area we have an extensive selection of guide books for your perusal. If you have forgotten the wellies, we have a modest ‘welly bank’ which you are free to use. Cycles are also available (nominal £5 per day, fully serviced) and can be secured with a refundable damage deposit. Please note that we do not supply adult safety helmets and recommend you bring your own. The less energetic of our guests may simply wish for a pleasant picnic at Monsal Head, or a romantic glass of bubbly by the bridge at Chatsworth House; in which case, Oldfields can provide a picnic set for such a venture. Please let us know. For couples with a young family we have a travel cot and high chair available for use. Outside: With over 12 acres of land there is plenty of grounds to explore. We have a small orchard where there are two brick built BBQs, patio, grass lawn, swings and additional furniture. Boules, rounder’s bats, footballs and other play items are available on request. Visitors are welcome to ramble across our fields, although there are lots of great walks in the immediate vicinity either down by the river, along quiet lanes or a stroll around Snelston conservation village.
