About the property

Cottage in Hinderwell village, Nr. Staithes, Yorkshire. 3 bedrooms. North Sea coast path, N. York Moors. Good food and eating out.

6 The Warren is set back from Hinderwell's high street. You can watch the world go by, but not be disturbed by it.

The colourful garden catches the sun throughout the day, making it an ideal place to unwind, play or chat. The living spaces are flexible enough to allow individuals to find peace and quiet alone and for everyone to sit together to eat, chat and play. We love to eat together, and the kitchen is equipped to cook. The local butcher stocks a range of local produce, with other fresh ingredients sourced from some local farms. The Co-op in Staithes will do all other basics, with bigger supermarkets and other specialist suppliers in Whitby. Equally, there are dozens of excellent pubs and restaurants along the coast and in the moorland villages - you never need to eat the same food twice! In addition to this are Whitby's fish and chip shops, with stiff competition from the local village chippy.

There are plenty of local activities, with surfing, sailing, swimming, sandcastles, fossil hunting and fishing from the beaches: Saltburn, Staithes, Runswick, Sandsend, Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay. The moors provide walking, cycling and mountain biking routes, as well as scenic drives. Pony trekking is available in nearby Borrowby. Many villages have art and craft studios including fine art at Staithes, pottery, glass and much more. Details are in the cottage.

Younger visitors will enjoy looking for CBeebies' Old Jack's house and haunts in Staithes.

Historians can explore Captain Cook's legacy; ancient churches and Northumbrian Saints; fishing and lifeboat stories; industrial heritage and of course fossil hunting at Runswick and Port Mulgrave.

The Cottage.

The attic space has expansive views inland up to the moorland edge. This is an ideal space for contemplation and creativity.

The living room has TV, DVD, board games, books, iPod/MP3 Player dock and Wi-Fi. Stay connected or shut the world out - your choice. Dining table plus additional table, 3 piece suite, side tables...

Gas central heating provides hot water on demand and controllable comfort whatever the weather.

Downstairs shower room with separate WC and wash basin.

Upstairs WC and wash basin.

Bedroom 1: 1 king-sized, 1 single, travel cot available. Views over the garden, original Georgian sash window.

Bedroom 2: super-king/twin - optional configuration. Views up to the moorland edge. A lovely sunny bedroom.

Attic: twin beds, loads of space, table and chairs, fine views up to the moorland edge and Borrowby Dale.

Optional landing bed if preferred to bedroom 1 single.

Reading/writing space on first floor landing with rocking chair and desk.

There is a generous boot shelf above the washing machine for your country walks, and local maps and guides in the hall cupboard.

The cottage also has garden chairs, a few beach bits including a wind break, an iron and ironing board and clothes airer if needed.

The garden has a secluded patio with fixed seating at the far end, with lawn and beautiful borders.

About Catherine and Stuart

Ours is a family cottage that we use ourselves. We have always holidayed on the North Yorkshire coast due to family connections, and because we love being in the countryside and we love walking.

We both work and cannot use the cottage as much as we would like. Friends always enjoy staying with us, so we thought it would be good to share the cottage with others.

It is because of our work that we ask for first contact to be by email or text. We can then get back to you during the evening.

Why Catherine and Stuart chose Yorkshire Moors and Coast

This cottage has plenty of history, and in renovating, we have been able to leave many ancient features which you can look out for.

In the attic, there is wattle and daub on some walls beneath the limewash, complemented by new lime plaster in other places. We have left the outline of ancient doorways, the bannister and the old panelled doors.

The first and ground floors are mid-Victorian, when the kitchen ceiling was raised(!) The staircase still has panelling from this renovation.

Our renovation added modern comforts and hygiene, whilst still showing off the history. You may use the ham and bacon hooks in the hall, but you may choose to use the fridge.

The early 20th Century Yorkist Range was in use until recently. The central heating, modern cooker and leaky chimney make this a visual feature only.

We have seen so many birds: 106 species in 10 days! The highlight though has to be whales, yes, whales; a mother and a baby off Boulby. I stood and for about 10 minutes and saw the long long backs come up and dive a couple of times. HH, Swansea

It was like a step back in time, fabulous memories of family cottage holidays; only this time in real comfort with central heating and hot showers.

Notes on accommodation: The accommodation is cool in summer thanks to the thick stone walls, and warm in winter thanks to the gas central heating and loft insulation. Where possible, we have used vintage family furniture and fittings, in keeping with this ancient cottage. The attic had been virtually untouched for over 100 years when we took possession, and we have re-used ancient boards to create the fitted cupboards in the attic. This is in keeping with the wavy lime plaster, the board doors, and the ancient handrail. It is clean, modern, and bright - but with a very old feel. Outside: The back yard is a suntrap. The front garden is down a small flight of steps, with a small patio at each end. There is fixed bench seating at the far end and folding chairs in the cupboard under the stairs. The garden consists of a long central lawn with flower borders down each side giving year round colour and interest. Utility Room: Washing machine, washing line, boot shelves. Iron, ironing board brooms and vacuum in the cupboard under the stairs. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen is included, towels are not usually but can be for an additional laundry charge. Cleaning and linen change weekly and between guests. Other: Stunning attic room, opened on renovation doubles as sitting room as well as bedroom. Exposed timbers, lime plaster and wattle and daub walls with real character. Quiet landings to escape with a book, each with their own character.

Lovely, cosy, clean and welcoming.

This is the second stay we have had at this cottage. We love the fact that the cottage is very spacious for our family of 5. It is warm and cosy and more so now due to the new wood burner. The children love the hatch between the kitchen and the living room! It has a very old fashioned feel but has a modern kitchen with everything you could possibly need and a lovely modern shower room. It is a very quiet area, this year we enjoyed walking to Staithes and Runswick Bay. It is a lovely cottage to enjoy a relaxing break away from it all. We have always had great communication with the owners. I am sure we will be returning again soon. I highly recommend this cottage.

Great place and great location

Great bolt hole and base to go walking along the coats from. Had everything we needed (could have done with one or two more DVDs for the kids but if that's all that's missing then that's no problem!) Lovely warm & clean - just what you need if its been a bit blustery. Nice chippy near by with Whitby fish!

Quaint cottage

This was a quirky cottage which seem to go on for ever. It was in a lovely location, and very quiet. I can not fault the owners at all for the service they provide,even when we booked it at very short notice. Even lack of parking facilities did not affect our stay. Lots of lovely places to visit round about and an abundance of cafes and restaurants scattered around, beautiful walks and beaches. A lovely stay which I could not fault.

Peaceful location

The owners were very helpful in making sure we had everything we needed and made us feel very welcome before we arrived. We had a 3 year old and a baby with us. The 3 year old loved the cottage and elected to sleep up in the attic where there were lots of toys and games to explore. The master bedroom was surprisingly spacious and the bed very comfortable. The cottage was very well equipped for cooking etc. Great location for walks to various beaches. Only downside was the cottage lacked a view and was quite dark due to its style/ age. When by the sea it's nice to be able to see it or at least look out over a garden. The little garden was pretty but with kids more outdoor space would be better. I would recommend this cottage overall.

great holiday cottage

The cottage is exactly as it is described in the listing, clean with a home from home feel. Perfect for families as there is lots of space and it is only a short drive to the beach at Runswick, bit longer to sands end. The owner provided everything I required and I would definetly recommend the cottage to a friend. I hope to return soon!

Home away from Home

The cottage was clean and well maintained, comfortable and very much a Home away from Home.

It is in a very convenient location for getting to the beach at Runswick Bay, and for exploring the moors.

Will be visiting again.

I am glad you have commented about the different age ranges it is suitable for: young families enjoy it , especially with the CBBC Old Jack connection. There is plenty for families with active teenagers to do; and then the house is comfortable for the adult only couples and groups who enjoy walking, and visiting what the National park has to offer.
