More than a house...a magical experience!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful stay in Vico. If you are looking to immerse yourself in true Italian life, this is the village and house for you! We are a family of four with children aged 7 and 9. They absolutely loved the pool outside, and the jacuzzi was lots of fun in the evenings after a day sightseeing.

The house and views are breathtaking. In fact, the photos cannot do the views justice. I will challenge you to find a better view when you are washing up in the mornings! We spent a lot of time lazing around on the patio, having barbecues under the grapevine and enjoying every corner of the house. My favourite spots were in the swing chair, on the sunny patio area overlooking the majestic landscape and in the hallway curled up on one of the armchairs. You will have everything you need in the house, and while there isn't WiFi, it's a great reminder that life doesn't stop just because the internet isn't available. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

We explored Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Bologna and Bagni di Lucca. All are within an hour or so's drive away and are well worth visiting if you want to break up your time at the house with a spot of sightseeing. There is also a great outdoor swimming pool in Bagni di Lucca and if you are looking for the best river swim you will find it at Canyon Park just a few minutes down the road. Here you can swim in the most refreshing and clear lagoon or take a paddleboard down the river. It's free to swim, but if you want a paddleboard they are 20 euros each. Well worth it!

The village itself is one of the most unique places we have ever visited. The people are so friendly and the artwork around the village is just wonderful to see. The kids had great fun trying to find the next piece of artwork or sculpture as we explored. By day the village is beautiful to walk around with its winding pathways and beautiful views all around. There is one restaurant in the village which we visited many times. Here you will find a warm welcome, wonderful food and great prices! A meal with starters, main course, dessert and wine came to 60 euros for all of us. You'll have some of the best pasta you have ever tasted. We were also able to sample some wonderful meats, including wild boar and rabbit hunted locally. It is advised to book each night as it does get busy at times. We also took part in the local activities including bingo and a Norwegian waffle party!

Please do not hesitate to book your stay here. It was amazing!

Great property in an even better location.

  • 5 of 5

The property is great - two spacious bedrooms and bathroom on the top floor; kitchen and living room on the ground/middle floor; living room and another kitchen/utility room in the bottom floor. The bottom floor gives access to the terraced garden and small pool. The village of Vico Pancellorum is beautiful - most does have car access, but we thought that this was an advantage. The restaurant/bar in the village was top notch - great food and service and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend.

Idyllic retreat

  • 5 of 5

This proved to be the perfect home for 4 nights after our long flight from San Francisco. We were greeted by Gabriele's father (speaking Italian only) who showed us around and presented us with a lovely array of meats, cheeses, wines and bread. The house offered a peaceful retreat for the 2 of us. The views are superb, but the feeling of authenticity was even better. The home feels like a well loved gathering spot for generations, with no hint of commercialized tourism. There were so many areas in the home to enjoy, but sitting under the grape arbor was our favorite spot during the warm days and evenings of early September. We enjoyed the pool on several afternoons as well. Internet at the house may work with a laptop with a USB port or a device that will accept a SIM card (we had neither). However there is WIFI at the local restaurant. Buca di Baldabo is an experience like no other with wonderful food, ambiance, great views and service...all for a very reasonable price and just a brief walk away. The village is charming with art installed everywhere, but be prepared for a vertical hike. The sights and views are worth the climb! Yes, the drive up is a little challenging but through a beautiful forest. Do plan to visit Barga and the Garfagnana region while there. I would recommend this for moderately fit people who long for peaceful immersion in a real Italian village, appreciate natural beauty and don't mind a bit of adventurous driving.

Lovely house in interesting remote village

  • 4 of 5

Gabriele was very helpful in the run up to our stay. The turn off to the Vico is about 10km past the nearest town with shops - Bagni di Lucca and 2.1km up a narrow winding road, so quite remote, which we wanted. The house is a short walk from the parking areas at the bottom of the village. It is an imposing house on three levels and was very clean on our arrival (and our departure!). Gabriele's parents met us at the house and provided a welcome gift of ham, cheese and wine. The rooms all have high ceilings and windows with shutters which offer good options for air and shade (temperatures pushed 40c when we were there). Two bedrooms were large and well furnished and the large single bathroom has a very good shower. We didn't use the living room (with satellite tv) but the kitchen was large and well equipped. The house contained useful things like oil, herbs, teas, coffee, washing up liquid and toilet paper, so no need to buy those before arrival. The lower ground floor opens out onto a vine covered terrace which was a cool place to eat, even in the hot sun. Below that was an exposed patio - great for drying off in the sun after a dip in the pool. The pool is about 5m diameter and great for cooling off. The village is car free so good for exploring on foot. The views from the house and village are spectacular. Our choice was influenced by the fact that Vico had a restaurant which was open every night. It provides a fixed price (euro 24) 3 course meal with wine - you choose from what they've cooked that day and the quality was great. There are no shops in the village however, so it is necessary to stock up in Bagni di Lucca (Conad supermarket has everything you might need) and be prepared for a big expedition if you want daily fresh bread or pastries!

Although Vico is somewhat remote we were able to drive to Pisa and Florence in about 2 hours and to Lucca in just over 1. All three are well worth the effort and the (nightly) Puccini concert in Lucca's San Giovanni church was wonderful.

In the interests of a balanced review I should say that there was occasional noise from the property across the path from ours (dog and children's tv) and a chain saw operated somewhere down in the valley on some days - but this is a rural economy so only to be expected.

I would recommend this property for those wanting to get away from the crowds whilst being close enough to the major cities of Northern Tuscany for day trips.

Peaceful Tuscan mountainside retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week and loved exploring Vico and the surrounding towns and villages. The house and the setting are great with access via a winding road off the main highway and then a walk of around 100m to the house. The pool was ideal to cool off in at the end of a hot day and the house provided a comfortable and well equipped base for us to explore the area. My son couldn't get the WiFi to work (plus point in my opinion!). Gabriele and his family were very helpful and the payments worked smoothly. The local restaurant served good local food and was great value! I thoroughly recommend this property for anyone looking to find peace in a busy world!

Peak to Piazza...perfect!

  • 5 of 5

A great spacious house, ideally located for accessing the mountains and the villages with equal ease. Great for families with a pet dog...ours loved morning walks/runs to the top of the mountain (Balzo Nero 1315m) at the foot of which the village of Vico Pancellorum is perched. We found that you could run up and down inside 2 hours or walk it as a whole morning endeavour; well worth the views on a clear day. Better still - the Italian Alps are accessible for a full day of walking or a determined runner; Alpe Tre Potenze (1940m) is a 17.2 mile round trip from the neighbouring village of Limano, with a couple of mountain huts along the route and a number of water-replen points.

The house is roomy and cool, with most of the appliances, utensils and services found in any modern house; it is excellent value for money. The shower is hot, the washing machine is in good order, the beds are fine and there are even two kitchens; one adjacent to the outside dining space. The private pool was great for cooling down and enjoying the spectacular views with a glass of wine. The outdoor dining space - under a mature canopy of grapevines - is a real selling point.

There is no dedicated parking but there are several parking areas, all within a maximum of 150m from the house. We could easily have 'hogged' a spot within 50m of the house - which we used for loading and unloading - but we decided to park further away when we weren't using the car.
