Overview

About the property

3 bed Cottage in Ilfracombe, N Devon with sea views

No. 2 Castle Terrace is a small 3 bedroomed cottage which has an attractive enclosed garden with two terraces a summer house and a decking area at the highest level offering views out to sea and across to Wales. There is also space at the rear for private parking.

There are 3 bedrooms, one double, one small with bunk beds and a back single bedroom. The cottage is ideal for family holidays and could just accommodate a family of 6 as an extra bed can be provided in the back bedroom, but it is not large enough for groups of more than 4 adults

We have just had a new kitchen installed and some decorating work carried out, so the property has been closed until end May.

The garden to the rear is tiered so supervision of small children is advisable and unsuitable for ball games but hey, you have the beach nearby!

A short (steep) walk takes you directly to the harbour where you can walk around the sea front amenities, including Damien Hirst's statue Verity. There are plenty of local attractions a short drive away to cater for all tastes, plus of course the beautiful coastline with the exciting Atlantic waves crashing in on the beaches.

Why Jim/Alice St. John chose Ilfracombe

We bought the cottage in 2008 as we fell in love with Devon especially Ilfracombe and the surrounding area. No matter what time of year, it is always an absolute pleasure to be there, even in the winter months.

Location

Coast/Beach:

The beach is a short walk or drive away and provides plenty of interest for all ages with beach combing, fishing and numerous crabs to be found hiding beneath rocks at Hele bay nearby. You can take boat trips around the bay to investigate the coastline and local wildlife, or out to the beautiful Lundy Island.

Distances:

Barnstaple is approximately 1/2 hour drive away with its famous pannier market. Woolacombe beach is 15 minutes drive, as is Croyde Bay providing plenty of surfing opportunities.

Further Details:

Ilfracombe is the largest local town offering shopping facilities with many varied restaurants and cafes to suit all appetites.

The famous Victorian tunnels and swimming pools are on the front, along with the Aquarium, crazy golf. The Landmark Theatre provides live entertainment throughout the year.

There is plenty to see and do around Ilfracombe, including the Sculpture Gardens and restaurant, and numerous Manors with sweeping Landscaped Gardens. To be found close to the cottage is Chambercombe Manor and Tea rooms with gardens leading down to the picturesque Hele Bay.

Nearby Lynton and Lynmouth with its water powered cliff railway.

Walkers can follow the coastal paths and enjoy the fabulous views and wildlife including basking seals.

Great cottage and great location.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week this September. The cottage was ideal for us - it was very clean with lovely décor giving a cosy feel. Very comfortable beds with bedding and towels supplied. You can see the sea from the sofa in the lounge and the views from the deck at the top of the garden are beautiful. The view of the sea from the front bedrooms are absolutely lovely as well. It was so quiet both in the house and the garden which added to a relaxing peaceful holiday. The cottage had everything we needed. The parking slot at the back of the property was a real bonus as parking is at a premium. It is a short walk to the harbour and town so the location is ideal - there is a bit of slope back up to the property but it's not too bad at all. We took our dog and he enjoyed the cottage and location! Overall, we would definitely recommend this cottage and we would happily go again.

Well appointed with a lovely view

  • 4 of 5

The cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The parking space was very convenient although compact! As our weather was very wet we appreciated the sea view and the Playstation. There was also a great range of DVD's and games to keep us entertained.

The cottage is in walking distance of the town and harbour but due to the steepness of the hill, not recommend for the elderly.

Fantastic location, lovely little property.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property, the photos of the sea view do not do it justice, it really is stunning. Perfectly based in Ilfracombe, can walk down into town easily. Steep walk back but invigorating! House has everything you need and was very comfortable. I will miss it, had a great week. Thank you!

Lovely little cottage in an ideal location

  • 5 of 5

10 - 15 minute walk from the harbour and beach and with a parking spot which is handy in Ilfracombe. I would recommend this as an ideal base to explore North Devon as there is plenty to do. It is a steep walk back to the property but this is Ilfracombe which is mostly hilly and we soon got used to it.

A lovely family holiday

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was clean and well presented - and it felt more like a home than a holiday cottage due to the nice decorative touches. It was well stocked with everything we could need. Jim and Alice were very helpful and easy to communicate with. We had four days of gorgeous weather so were able to eat out on the patio in the back garden (the sunniest bit is half way up, so we moved the furniture to make the most of the evening sun). The walk to the Harbour front going down only takes 5 minutes, but it's a rather more strenuous walk coming back up. Great to be on a hill, though, to make the most of the lovely sea views. The only downside was the damp smell in the bathroom, so we had to keep the window open constantly. A very enjoyable stay, though, and would recommend to others.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the lovely review, this is exactly how we like guests to feel about the cottage. Also thanks for the comments on the bathroom which I assume has arisen from recent guests who had a flood in there. I will address that damp odour as soon as I can.
