No. 2 Castle Terrace is a small 3 bedroomed cottage which has an attractive enclosed garden with two terraces a summer house and a decking area at the highest level offering views out to sea and across to Wales. There is also space at the rear for private parking.

There are 3 bedrooms, one double, one small with bunk beds and a back single bedroom. The cottage is ideal for family holidays and could just accommodate a family of 6 as an extra bed can be provided in the back bedroom, but it is not large enough for groups of more than 4 adults

We have just had a new kitchen installed and some decorating work carried out, so the property has been closed until end May.

The garden to the rear is tiered so supervision of small children is advisable and unsuitable for ball games but hey, you have the beach nearby!

A short (steep) walk takes you directly to the harbour where you can walk around the sea front amenities, including Damien Hirst's statue Verity. There are plenty of local attractions a short drive away to cater for all tastes, plus of course the beautiful coastline with the exciting Atlantic waves crashing in on the beaches.

Lovely holiday home in good location

What a lovely holiday home. We stayed here in October and it was very clean, well furnished and warm. Great to have parking at the rear as you would struggle to park anywhere near, we have an estate car and managed to fit it into the space. Kitchen seemed very new with everything you could possible need to cook with. Nice terraced garden which I would imagine is lovely in the summer with areas to sit out. Living room had TV with DVD player, wide selection of DVDs. Loved this place and hope to return next year.

Cosy and convenient

My wife and I visited Ilfracombe for a wedding and decided to add a few extra days to turn our trip into a long weekend. We're very glad that we did, as this property immediately made us feel at home. The parking around this area of Ilfracombe is pretty much non-existent, so the fact that this has its own driveway is excellent (although it's very small, so longer cars may struggle to fit!). The house itself has a fairly sizeable garden to the rear, with BBQ and an outdoor seating area which would be great in the summer. The kitchen is fairly modern and comes with the usual basic cutlery, etc. There is no freezer though, so plan accordingly. The bedrooms suited us perfectly, and the master room has a beautiful sea view. The shower is excellent, albeit a bit of a struggle for taller people.

The location is great - just a short 10 minute walk into the town centre (although the house is on a fairly steep hill, which wasn't ideal for my pregnant wife!).

Our only real criticism, as others have also commented on, is the lack of an internet connection - especially since mobile phone reception is absolutely terrible across most of Ilfracombe (seemingly regardless of whatever mobile network you're on!).

The owner, Jim, provided a useful document containing all property details, and he was extremely helpful and friendly. Recommended!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for the review. We are going to install WiFi this winter (haven't been able to get down sooner) and will replace the fridge with one that has a freezer compartment. Afraid we can't do anything about the hill!

Well equipped cosy cottage

Its a nice little property in a good position in the town. Its a fairly steep walk down (and back up!) into town but for that you do get a great view from the rooms at the front of the house.

The kitchen is well equipped with all the basics. The furnishings are on the tired side and a couple of the light bulbs had failed. Also the master bedroom needs a better clean as there were some dusty old cobwebs next to the wardrobe. I would expect a decent inspection should highlight these things before guests arrive.

Beds are on the soft side and so lack a little support.

There is no wifi (as mentioned in the description) but there is a good 4G signal in most of the house.

What is really missing is a house manual. It would be so helpful to know that in the cupboards there is more entertainment equipment and also more pillows/blankets available. We only found them when checking we hadn't left anything behind.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments, we appreciate candid reviews which help us to improve the stay for subsequent guests. As we live some distance away we rarely get the opportunity to inspect the property especially when it is constantly booked, but I can pass on your comments to our cleaner who is very proud and will rectify any issues. I intend to install WiFi for next year as this seems to be a requirement these days, and really appreciate the comment about a manual (which has been mentioned before) so intend to provide this as well for next year. The close of season is when we get down to the cottage to check things over properly so if the furniture is in need of repair or replacement then we will obviously address this.

Lovely Family Cottage - good value for money.

Overall very pleased with our family stay at the property. Lovely sea views. The property was clean and well equipped and represented good value for money. Highly recommend! (As a suggestion a welcome pack with information about local facilities such as emergency no of Dr/Dentist, day of refuse collection etc would have been helpful as the property does not have access to Wifi)

Fantastic accommodation in a wonderful location.

The property was extremely comfortable and to a high standard. Two of the bedrooms look straight out to sea and are the best views we have ever seen. You can watch the passenger boat Sail to Lundy Island whilst sat in bed! The harbour is a steady 10 minute walk away and the high street even closer. The house had everything we needed, for two adults and two young children. Washing machine, tumble dryer, dish washer, DVDs etc. the back garden is laid out over 3 levels allowing optimum time in the sun. The front of the property allows for some fantastic sunsets and views out to sea. Parking at the rear couldn't be more simple and easy to find. Very cosy clean and well kept cottage, so much so we stayed an extra night !! Loved it!!

Immaculate cottage which has recently had a brand new kitchen fitted (stayed June 2016).

Very pleased with how clean,homely and comfortable the cottage was. In a prominent position at the top of a hill overlooking the sea from the front.

The kitchen was brand new as were all the accessories. The bathroom appeared to also have been refitted. All in all a very pleasant place to stay.

Car parking for one vehicle at the rear which was a must as no adequate parking at front. Rear garden terraced upwards away from house which was a delight as it was a well stocked traditional country cottage garden in a very tidy condition. The tv had no signal on arrival but was repaired the very next day after contacting the owners,even though we expressed we were not to concerned but let them know for future tenants. I could only find one drawback being that the ceiling height for the shower was quite low. I am about 5ft 9 tall,so anyone taller may need to crouch down a little.The shower is above the bath,which would not be long enough for adults to bath in.

We bought the cottage in 2008 as we fell in love with Devon especially Ilfracombe and the surrounding area. No matter what time of year, it is always an absolute pleasure to be there, even in the winter months.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The beach is a short walk or drive away and provides plenty of interest for all ages with beach combing, fishing and numerous crabs to be found hiding beneath rocks at Hele bay nearby. You can take boat trips around the bay to investigate the coastline and local wildlife, or out to the beautiful Lundy Island.

Distances:

Barnstaple is approximately 1/2 hour drive away with its famous pannier market. Woolacombe beach is 15 minutes drive, as is Croyde Bay providing plenty of surfing opportunities.

Further Details:

Ilfracombe is the largest local town offering shopping facilities with many varied restaurants and cafes to suit all appetites.

The famous Victorian tunnels and swimming pools are on the front, along with the Aquarium, crazy golf. The Landmark Theatre provides live entertainment throughout the year.

There is plenty to see and do around Ilfracombe, including the Sculpture Gardens and restaurant, and numerous Manors with sweeping Landscaped Gardens. To be found close to the cottage is Chambercombe Manor and Tea rooms with gardens leading down to the picturesque Hele Bay.

Nearby Lynton and Lynmouth with its water powered cliff railway.

Walkers can follow the coastal paths and enjoy the fabulous views and wildlife including basking seals.
