Old School House, Beautiful Victorian building in the heart of the Pennines

Updated: 10-Oct-2016
Cottage/B&B in Allenheads, near Hexham, Northumberland, England - Stunning Landscape, Ideal For Rural Retreats

For anyone wanting to tour the North Pennines, Lake District, NE Coast or Scottish Borders the Old School House in Allenheads is the perfect location. About one hour's drive from the A1 or M1, and from the nearest cities of Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, Sunderland, Middlesborough and Carlisle. Yet at 1,350 feet, it is England's highest village and situated within a designated area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). It is also located in an area with some of the best Dark Sky Discover Sites in the UK and we are building the North Pennines Observatory at ACA on our premises, due for completion this winter (2016). Star gazing equipment and telescopes are available for use before or after the completion date to give you direct access to these nationally acclaimed skies. Additional charges may apply for tuition and access to the large telescopes. Pre-booking is required.

The Old School house overlooks the village, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the North Pennines, easily accessible to nature lovers for walks. Originally used as a classroom and library, it has recently been refurbished to provide spacious, self-contained, accommodation for visitors. Since the refurbishment in 2012 a number of delighted visitors including groups of friends and families, artists, writers and poetry groups, musicians, film makers, photographers, and cyclists on the coast to coast route, have enjoyed this venue.

The property has been listed in the September 2016 edition of The Guardian’s top places to stay in the UK over Christmas and New Year.

Stunning views from a beautiful accomodation

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful stay at the Old School House in Allenheads. The owners were very welcoming and forthcoming and I felt at home immediately. The place is clean and very well kept and it was a matter of driving for a few minutes to see the most stunning sites. Doing a tour of the Lake District is also perfectly do-able from Allenheads. Would definitely recommend this property to anyone up for a nice walk in nature.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for the lovely review. We're very glad you enjoyed your stay. I would just like to add that as well as the many stunning sites you mention in the area, the view from The Old School House itself is really a sight to behold and doesn't require any travelling at all. Many thanks, Helen

The rooms are clean and comfortable with all the essentials you need. Well stocked kitchen so easy to cook and there is a lovely wood burning stove as well. Looking forward to come back!
