About Michelle

We divide our time between Melbourne, Australia, Bali and Italy. We are chefs who run a busy hospitality business. We come to Italy as often as possible to immerse ourselves in the local food and culture. As Australians, we love the outdoors and outdoor entertaining, and this is reflected in the outdoor spaces of the house. As chefs (and food lovers) cooking and eating are pretty central to our lives, so you will find a perfectly equipped kitchen, fantastic restaurant recommendations, and some great in house dining options that will give you a truly unique experience.

Michelle purchased this farmhouse in 2012

Why Michelle chose Fermo

We have traveled to every region in Italy, but fell in love with Le Marche when we rented a house there 4 years ago. The countryside is stunning, it is coastal and mountainous, and it is full of beautiful little hilltop towns. Of course, this is true for many parts of Italy, but what sets Le Marche apart is the people. They are warm, friendly, down to earth, hard working and hospitable. You will be embraced by our local community, as we were, and it is this interaction with locals and their way of life that offers the most rewarding holiday experiences.

What makes this farmhouse unique

People often ask us about our favourite dining experiences in Italy, expecting us to reel off Michelin starred restaurants, but our best eating is always in the kitchens of our neighbours' houses. We want to share these experiences with our guests. In conjunction with a local cook we can provide you with a range of truly unique culinary options from cooking classes, fantastic convenient prepared meals to fully catered alfresco family meals Italian style. Full details are available on request.

Fantastic Property - The Perfect Holiday Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from an absolutely wonderful 2-week break at Casa Dell'Orto!

From the start of the process the owners could not have been more friendly, helpful and informative.

We were a group of 10 (family & friends) looking to enjoy great food & wine in a beautiful setting and we were in no way disappointed. There were 3 children in total (all under the age of 12) and I’m happy to say the well-maintained pool kept them entertained for hours! The view from the house of undulating hills and picturesque hilltop villages will stay with me for a long time! The interior is modern and spacious with an extremely well equipped kitchen.

The surrounding area has a raft of charming towns (car essential) to explore such as Fermo, Grottammare and San Benedetto del Tronto. One of the highlights of our trip was a wine tasting tour; taking in 3 vineyards plus lunch. This was kindly arranged through a contact of the owners. We also took advantage of Romina’s home cooking one evening, which was a real treat. Venturing further a field, we made a trip to both Rome & Bologna (definitely recommended for food lovers).

I cannot thank the owners enough for making this a truly perfect place to stay.

Montottone Marvel

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa dell'orto during the last week of July 2014 and had a fantastic time. The villa has every creature comfort including a fabulous kitchen (the owners are Australian Chefs), fabulous bedrooms and facilities - the ground floor master bedroom and bathroom is also good for disabled use or those less firm.

We had 1 x day of rain but hunkered down and watched the film 'Gravity' on the massive state of the art TV and sound system. We slept and ate extremely well and from the villa you have excellent views of the beautiful local countryside and villages. We also enjoyed playing cards and drinking local wine on the 1st floor outside patio.

We spent our time relaxing by the pool and exploring the beautiful local villages. Montottone is a 5 minute drive from the villa and has all your basic needs and a fantastic pizza restaurant on the corner of the square - incredibly good value too. We also went to Macerata to the open air opera which was fantastic, there is a season of outdoor opera at the Macerata Sferisterio - about 45 mins drive.

Casa dell'orto is a true gem and highly recommend it to anyone interested. We also took up the offer of Romina 'housekeeper & farmer's wife' who live a few hundred yards just up the road from the villa - to come in and cook a 4 course family meal - the carne de maiale con rosmarino (from the farm) was succulent and fabulous! We also bought 2 Litres of Romina's extra virgin olive oil before we left - but sadly this has just run out!

We basically stayed put, except for an evening trip to the opera and visiting the local medieval villages including Svegliano which is very pretty. The peace and tranquility was what we loved and the local people were all so incredibly friendly.

Have a great stay - we did:).

The owners have also left some good instructions and local information and if you have any concerns or problems Romina and her son Alessio who speaks good English are just up the road.
