About the property

Marrick, Swaledale, North Yorkshire, England - South Facing, Quiet Village Location

Rose Cottage has a south facing terraced front garden with fantastic views across the dale. Entry to the cottage is via a useful porch, designed to accommodate muddy boots and/or for drying off the beloved pet! The kitchen diner is homely and furnished in farmhouse style with a traditional Yorkshire flagged stone floor and an Esse range cooker (same as an Aga). A cosy beamed sitting room provides a relaxing place to "get away from it all" and relax. There is a utility room which provides space for storing outdoor equipment such as climbing or cycling gear. The stairs lead to a newly refurbished shower room and then upwards on to a separate cloakroom with WC and wash basin. The two double bedrooms are at the front of the house and both provide beautiful views across the dale to the opposing hills. Situated in a lovely quiet and friendly village Rose Cottage is ideally placed for those wishing to walk the many footpaths, cycle the quiet lane or simply relax and watch the world go by.

Rose Cottage was my much loved family home and has belonged to my family since 1946. I now live in Suffolk but have maintained Rose Cottage after I inherited it for our personal family and friends holidays. I have chosen now to offer Rose Cottage as a holiday home so that others can enjoy and share the experience of this stunning and beautiful area of outstanding natural beauty.

Notes on accommodation: Due to the age and design, in particular the stairs, of the property it is not suitable for children under 5 or for people with severe mobility problems. Outside: The front garden is terraced and a real sun trap as it is facing south. Garden chairs and a barbecue is available for use. Utility Room: Washing machine Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included. The property is cleaned weekly and prior to any booking. Towels and linen can be changed more than weekly on request at an extra cost.

A little gem in the Yorkshire dales

We booked this cottage about 6 months ago, because we love the area, and I must admit that I was concerned that I had booked when I saw the previous review but I was more than pleasantly surprised.

After an long drive for about 4 hours we arrived in Marrick just before dark.

And we were happy to be welcomed by such a homely feeling lovely cottage.

All was very clean, and everything was working, a lovely old fashion kitchen, a very modern bathroom, and 2 nice decorated bedrooms, the cottage has central heating and is working very well, so we were pleasantly surprised with the cottage, we had a great break, and booked again for next year

small, cold, isolated

dusty, spiderwebs everywhere, arga (esse) didn't work (was only cool all week even though we had it on full power) radiators in both bedrooms didn't work so very cold. House is a good 20 minutes away from leyburn or richmond so very isolated. Attempted to contact owner about esse and radiators but they never answered the phone and called me back (left messages for them but got nothing back). We had to leave after 3 nights becaused the bedrooms were too cold and we couldn't cook anything. If you want a cold, isolated, small cottage in the middle of nowhere then this is perfect, if not then just be careful.

Owner's Response: Most reviewers describe Rose Cottage as "warm and cosy" and in a "beautiful setting" I was therefore shocked to receive this review and made some rapid enquiries. As I personally live some hundreds of miles from Rose Cottage, I employ an local agent to oversee the maintenance and quality of the accommodation and to be on call if day to day concerns arise. In the last few weeks this person has clearly sadly let both myself and my guests down by not responding to phone calls when guests needed to speak to them. It was not myself that the guest supposed they were calling but said agent. In order that we can return to providing a happy place for people to holiday the agent is no longer employed by us and has now been replaced.

We came home. Didn’t even look upstairs!!! It smelt damp and definitely not up to our expectations.

Would not recommend it. We phoned the owner 4 times prior to arrival. We have been home a week now and should of been staying there and still haven’t had a return phone call from the owner

A delightful Dales cottage that ticks all the boxes

We had a delightful stay in this very traditional dales cottage. The cottage is well equipped, warm and has a lovely comfy bed. The shower was great and we had great fun cooking on the Esse range. The peace and tranquility in the evenings was just the job in the cosy sitting room after some fabulous walks during the day, many straight from the front door. The weather was kind and we enjoyed coffee in the garden bathed in late afternoon sunshine.

We watched the coast to coast walkers passing the front door on a spectacular walk through the dale.

Thank you for sharing your cottage with us we had a fabulous stay.

Comfortable and cosy cottage in a beautiful setting

Super week spent in Swaledale. The cottage was warm and equipped with everything you could need. In fact the kitchen had more useful items than we have at fome!!

Teeside International airport, 20 miles. Leeds Bradford Airport, 50 miles.

Newcastle international airport, 50 miles.

Use of car is recommended


Reeth (3 miles) is the nearest village with shops.

Richmond (9 miles) boasts larger shops and a supermarket as well as a theatre, cinema, restaurants and swimming pools.

Further Details:

North Yorkshire is renowned for good food and drink and in the area there are many excellent pubs and restaurants to choose from.

Walking is very popular in the area and the cottage is conveniently situated on Wainwright's Coast To Coast walk. Cycling is becoming very popular but be warned that the roads and tracks are very steep and demanding.
