Overview

About the property

Marrick, Swaledale, North Yorkshire, England - South Facing, Quiet Village Location

Rose Cottage has a south facing terraced front garden with fantastic views across the dale. Entry to the cottage is via a useful porch, designed to accommodate muddy boots and/or for drying off the beloved pet! The kitchen diner is homely and furnished in farmhouse style with a traditional Yorkshire flagged stone floor and an Esse range cooker (same as an Aga). A cosy beamed sitting room provides a relaxing place to "get away from it all" and relax. There is a utility room which provides space for storing outdoor equipment such as climbing or cycling gear. The stairs lead to a newly refurbished shower room and then upwards on to a separate cloakroom with WC and wash basin. The two double bedrooms are at the front of the house and both provide beautiful views across the dale to the opposing hills. Situated in a lovely quiet and friendly village Rose Cottage is ideally placed for those wishing to walk the many footpaths, cycle the quiet lane or simply relax and watch the world go by.

We came home. Didn’t even look upstairs!!! It smelt damp and definitely not up to our expectations.

Would not recommend it. We phoned the owner 4 times prior to arrival. We have been home a week now and should of been staying there and still haven’t had a return phone call from the owner

Owner's Response: I am sorry that you did not like the cottage. Also disappointed that you failed to contact me. I have checked my phone records, emails and messages and there is no record of your calls and no record of any messages. I can only guess that you were calling a wrong number. I always make a point of responding immediately to my guests. Gay Sayles

A delightful Dales cottage that ticks all the boxes

  • 5 of 5

We had a delightful stay in this very traditional dales cottage. The cottage is well equipped, warm and has a lovely comfy bed. The shower was great and we had great fun cooking on the Esse range. The peace and tranquility in the evenings was just the job in the cosy sitting room after some fabulous walks during the day, many straight from the front door. The weather was kind and we enjoyed coffee in the garden bathed in late afternoon sunshine.

We watched the coast to coast walkers passing the front door on a spectacular walk through the dale.

Thank you for sharing your cottage with us we had a fabulous stay.

Mixed feelings

  • 3 of 5

The beds were comfortable and clean even though the king sized mattress was on a double bed base. The main bedroom had plenty of storage space. The other bedroom with single beds has no hanging space and the tallboy has drawers occupied with spare bedding . The shower room is spacious and has a good force of water. The whole cottage is warm due to the Esse being on all the time. The kitchen and lounge are extremely small which I know is common for Dales houses, however I do think that this needs pointing out in the description. When there were four adults eating in the kitchen it was difficult for anyone to move about out of the door without others standing up to let them past. The Esse we enjoyed using. I personally found the lounge to be very oppressive, the furniture is far too large for such a small room. Unfortunately there was an unusual aroma in the lounge too and I had to keep the window open. This may have been due to some damp, I am not sure but it certainly needs addressing. There are lots of interesting and old artefacts around, it s quite clear that this was once a family home, unfortunately lots of items are covered in layers of dust as are the inside of some of the cupboards . This is a very old property and dust is inevitable, it must take lots of time to clean it . When we arrived the wifi was not working, however the owner did address this problem for us.

Very pretty little cottage

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at this beautiful and quirky little cottage in The Dales. We felt very at home there, and although it wasn't the cleanest (lots of cobwebs and black dirt and flies around the windows) we loved the welcoming bottle of wine, tea and coffee things laid out and information pack. I'm sure we'll be back for another stay, thank you!

Beautiful location

  • 3 of 5

The cottage has lovely views over the fields to the moors and is in a lovely little village not far from the busy village of Reeth. We were very well located for exploring the Yorkshire Dales and went on some lovely walks.

The cottage is very small and cosy and had everything we needed, although the outside space was disappointing.

Information about how to work the microwave and about recycling/rubbish would have been helpful.

Sadly, more attention needs to be given to keeping the cottage clean, there were a lot of cobwebs and dust around, and the cupboards looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a long time.

Owner's Response: I am pleased that you enjoyed your time in Rose Cottage and you had everything you needed. Indeed the walks and views are really lovely. There are instructions for the microwave along with instructions for all the appliances in the large folder which was left out for you to look at as needed. I am baffled that you found some cobwebs and a little dust as the cottage is thoroughly cleaned after each guest and has just not long ago had a deep clean. I will bring it to the attention of the housekeeper so that she can check as soon as possible.
