About Bruce & Dorothy McKay

Dorothy & I built our house in West Lothian in 1999, close to Bathgate where Dorothy was born. I am retired and enjoy golfing - being a member at Archerfield on the East Coast. I will happily arrange for guests to play this magnificent course. I also look after the garden - when not golfing! Dorothy is a child-minder and works with our daughter, Laura who, herself, has four children. In total, we have eight grandchildren - the latest born two weeks ago.

Why Bruce & Dorothy McKay chose West Lothian

We searched for a number of years for a plot of ground and finally came up with this beautiful rural surrounding.

The house is situated in two and a half acres in a lowland crofting designated area which means we are in the countryside in a low density populated area. We have stunning views towards the Pentland Hills & the Five Sisters.

We are close to three railways stations providing easy access to both Edinburgh & Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is approximately 25 minutes drive and Glasgow airport 45 minutes.

There are many beautiful walks within easy access & entry to National Grid 75 cycle network is five minutes away. The county has many historical and tourist attractions.

What makes this cottage unique

Livingston Outlet - McArthur Glen - and Livingston Shopping Centre are five minutes drive. We are off the main road but still have access to public transport.

The local bridal path runs down the east side of our house so there is always plenty to see as the horses run in the field adjacent.

The garden is a haven for wildlife, including kestrels, red kites and buzzards.

Notes on accommodation: The accommodation has been tastefully decorated to a high standard. Dorothy enjoys making the place friendly and happy with attention to detail a priority. Outside: We have 2.5 acres of garden which our guests are welcome to use with or without their pets. There is a gazebo outside the French doors. Lovely place to enjoy the evening sun. Cleaning / Towels / Linen All towels and linen included. The property is cleaned on departure. Extra towels can be requested at any time. Other: Conservatory - very bright room with double French doors which open to the garden.

Ticks Every Box

Firstly a warm welcome from owners Bruce and Dorothy. A gorgeous warm little cottage with everything you could possibly wish for. Not on holiday but I was escaping from building work being done in my home in Edinburgh. This was the perfect peaceful retreat. If I should ever need work done again, I would return without giving it a second thought. Perfect spot too for people on holiday. Central area to drive to various activities and locations. Superb Indian restaurant in Whitburn. I relaxed daily looking onto the gardens watching what I thought was a rather large bunny bouncing around only to discover it is one of the resident hares. Handy for local shops and also a larger selection if you drive to the centre at Livingston. Good train services nearby, if required , instead of driving into Edinburgh. My little old cat Vera was welcomed and she was also very much at home here and snoozed away the days in her basket.

The kitchen provided everything you could possibly need and it was good to get washing done and hanging outside in the fresh air. Everywhere just spotless and instant hot water when needed. SO worth the 20/25 minute drive from Edinburgh. Highly recommended for single person or two. Good safe parking off road. Bruce and Dorothy were great hosts. There to assist otherwise leaving you to get on with your break. Thank you both for everything.

If you want a nice quiet break away this is ideal

The Property has everything you need for a quiet comfortable getaway in pleasant surroundings but with real easy access to all of the main areas you may want to go to in the mid highlands. Travelling from the near by Bathgate station with free parking to the centre of Edinburgh and Glasgow is painless and inexpensive with good regular services. Equally there are many decent places to visit within 20 miles making it an ideal touring base.

The owners Bruce & Dorothy make you feel welcome immediately whilst not being intrusive, they work hard to make your stay easy. In the property you have everything you may need right from the start all of which adds to the positive experience and this is helpful when you have travelled 300 miles plus as we did. Would we recommend it absolutely, in fact we have already had conversations with our friends and family and we hope to return again at some point.

In summary if you want a nice quiet bolt hole with the benefit of being central in mid Scotland this is the place......... and as a bonus in real terms the cost would be less than a premier inn, a no brainier really............

20% booking fee is applicable. Full amount to be paid 7 days prior to arrival. Late bookings should be settled in full prior to arrival.

£50 deposit will be taken in cash on arrival and returned on departure assuming no breakages or damages have occurred.

Changeover Day:
We prefer Saturday to Saturday but will consider long weekends should these be available. This would normally be Thursday to Monday. However, during July and August there is a minimum of 7 nights - Saturday to Saturday only.

Notes on prices:
Short term/weekend bookings will be charged on a pro rata basis.
