Hacton Cruck is a rare example of medieval and modern in perfect harmony; a seamless fusion of 21st century technology and traditional craftsmanship. The restoration of Hacton has successfully managed the transition to modern day, yet in essence it is still a 600 year old building.
This is a medieval hall in all its glory retaining far more of the essence of the building than is normally found outside of a museum situation; a piece of history with great character, atmosphere and romance.

About the Owner
As a child I played in the derelict old building that was Hacton Cruck. Over the years I watched its condition decline. Gutters rotted, water poured down the walls. The north-east corner of the roof blew off and the floor and stair collapsed. Panels decayed and windows fell out.
Meanwhile I grew up, trained as a cabinet maker and left for New Zealand. I moved into building as a profession; furniture and boatbuilding for pleasure; diversified into commercial forestry and grow exotic trees experimentally. The sum of these experiences set me up ideally for the restoration of Hacton when it came my way.
Restoring it was a dream fulfilled, and though not living in it myself, I get great pleasure out of knowing so many other people get to experience and enjoy such a special building

Even the weather was good enough for us to enjoy three days of excellent cycling around the lovely quiet lanes in the immediate vicinity. We spent two evenings at dusk watching the badgers around their sett in the local woods and had a visit by two owls around midnight on another. I think we will be back.

“Thanks to an amateur historian family friend I grew from playing in the cruck to having an understanding that this building was something special. My grandfather's death created an opportunity and after 15 years in New Zealand it came into my ownership; at the time it was on the point of being lost altogether. The restoration project took another 15 years which culminated in Hacton being highly commended in the RICS Conservation Award National Finals in 2012. It involved individuals who became friends; the support of family members who perhaps thought I was mad but who grew to love the place too, and friends with all sorts of skills who make it possible for me to manage the property while living overseas. It wasn't a matter of choice but of chance that I came to own the cruck”

40 minutes to Ross-on-Wye and Symonds Yat, Ledbury and Leominster.
Plenty of history to explore, black and white villages, castles, churches, abbeys, museums.
Marvellous walking from the door or visit The Black Mountains above Hay-on-Wye or The Forest of Dean
The Yew Tree Inn is in the village.

If you stay at Hacton you’ll find your eye constantly drawn upwards, your mind going with it, leading to contemplative thought, a sense of calm. So If you are looking to leave the rat race for a time, to recharge the batteries, to allow time for a natural order to re establish itself and harmony take over, then Hacton is the perfect place. Dilys, our marvellous housekeeper lives next door. She is as big on character and heart as The Cruck and also has a long association with the building. She is responsible for its being beautifully presented and welcoming. If you need to know where to go, what to do, how it works; just ask Dilys”

- Notes on accommodation: All the furnishings and fitments are of a high standard, and we've put in WiFi and TV, but if its a luxury holiday let you're after, this is not the place for you. We have fitted underfloor heating, and a modern wood burner (with a good supply of firewood) but it can still be chilly; if that is a concern book for the summer. We prefer not to have dogs in the building and it is definitely no smoking. Outside: Outside is a large private garden with comfortable outdoor furniture and gas barbecue. The woodshed is close by with a good supply of dry firewood. The house sits in three acres of orchard and old pasture land leading directly to a network of footpaths; the River Wye is 20 minutes walk away Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bedding is provided, towels etc. While our housekeeper ensures the place is kept up to scratch we ask that you leave the property clean and tidy. To prepare for our next guests we like visitors to leave by 10.00am
