This modern split level apartment opens out onto cobbled street centuries old. If you like Spanish villages you will love Grazalema. This is the place where the Spanish nationals bring their families to relax at weekends and during festival times. Grazalema is a village full of character and charm and an excellent place for couples, families or groups. It offers excellent walking, climbing, cycling and swimming in the summer months.

'La Galleria' is a stylish, modern apartment, situated in a traditionally fronted house metres away from an old historic building. Being only 5 minutes walk from the village centre, you to take advantage of the amenities of this wonderful place (please read our independent reviews).

Sitting at an altitude of 800 metres and in the centre of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, the village occupies a prime location among the pueblos blancos.

A feature of the village is its cobbled streets, well-preserved historic architecture and churches including signs of occupation from Roman times. The Sierra de Grazalema has numerous archaeological sites of great value including Pileta Cave where cave paintings are a feature.

Which? consumer magazine Travel Supplement (May 2014) commented: It is "filled with lush river valleys and precipitous gorges. Magnificent scenery makes for rewarding walking and spring is the best time to see the the Sierra's fabulous array of wold flowers. A week's meandering in April or May could result in sightings of almost 300 differing species, ranging from tiny pimpernels to wild magenta peonies as large as saucers. The Sierra de Grazalema is also known for its bird population that includes griffon vultures, short-toed eagles, bee eaters and blue rock thrushes."

The villages has excellent credentials: UNESCO Biosphere (since 1977) , Natural Park (since 1984), CEE Area of Special Protection for Birds (1989)and was awarded a European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (2004). Regarded by many as the centre-piece of the pueblo blancos (white villages), Grazalema is set among Karst limestone mountain scenery and forests of cork, rare Spanish fir and Mediterranean oak. Peaks of 1500 metres can be accessed within 2 hours of leaving the apartment door and the area is a prime location for rock climbing, mountain biking and caving (and horse riding, canoeing and gorge exploration by arrangement).

The village is well known for its woolen industry and locally made shawls and blankets are still sold in the village. Local cheeses are popular and are made on the outskirts of the village. Hand made leather goods are available from artisan shops.

The village is tastefully preserved but still offers a full range of tapas bars, restaurants and shops. Despite its weekend popularity, the bars and restaurants retain their value-for-money style and it is possible to dine for less than €10 per person. In 2015 a reasonably-priced gastro-bar opened some 30 metres from the apartment offering excellent local cuisine.

Whatever season you choose, Grazalema has something to offer. Spring time is fresh with the hills coated in wild flowers.Hot summers are tempered by the accessibility of local swimming pools set in stunning locations accessed at very reasonable prices (€2pp).

Night life is given additional zest during the many summer and autumn festivals. Autumn is a great time for walking and outdoor activities.

The apartment is ideally located just 5 minutes from the village square and above an art gallery which holds periodic international exhibitions. Modern, tastefully decorated and very well-equipped, the apartment is close to local restaurants (usually providing free wi-fi) should you wish to eat out. From the upper lounge the views across the terrace are superb and it is a great place to watch the sunrise or a starry night.

Most of all, Grazalema is an ideal place to relax, absorb the surroundings and take life as it comes.

This location would ideally suit a couple/family or small group keen to mix and match exploring the outdoors with relaxing in the square watching village life. Long walks often have shorter variations. A wide variety of wildlife can be found in the vicinity of the Park and the local tourist information office is well stocked with guidebooks and maps.

Why David Wood chose Grazalema

We bought this apartment in 2005 having considered many other places in Spain over a 20 year period of visiting the country. We stumbled on it by accident during a road trip from Madrid to Malaga in 2004. It didn't take us long to make up our minds.

We wanted to find a place that had excellent scenery, authentic charm and offered good, inexpensive local facilities. We were surprised how few non-Spanish people knew about Grazalema.

Even now after 10 years we are still finding new places to go and explore.

We use it mainly as a base for mountain activities but also as a place to re-charge and take life as it comes. We find local people are very helpful and friendly even if your Spanish is not very good!

What makes this apartment unique

In addition to its charm Grazalema has its own cheese making factory and produces its own woolen blankets. There are artisan handmade leatherwork shops and a market every Tuesday. A recent addition is a gastro-bar some 30 metres from the apartment serving local foods at very reasonable prices. This is one of Andalusia's best kept secrets. We were amazed to find so much on our doorstep:- jagged mountain peaks over 1500 metres in height towering over an historic village that has kept its individuality throughout. We learned that this was the place that the Spanish nationals often visit at weekends when families can be seen dining out in the square. Despite the villages popularity we were impressed by how unspoiled the village is and how reasonable prices are with many of the numerous bars offering a 3 course menu for €8 or €9. We have had the opportunity of staying at fiesta time - and there are many - including the Bandalero festival in October when the square in turned into a medieval village, the bull running festival in July which provides a focus for the whole family, and the Christmas festivities. This is where families appear relaxed. Having tired of beach life, we nevertheless enjoy the fantastically located local pool during visits in July or August (entry fee €2!). As one of our friends commented: 'What is there not to like about Grazalema'

Beautiful apartment - perfect location

David Wood's apartment is the best one we have ever stayed in - the layout allows for a lot of privacy - the beds are comfortable - the views from the terrace on the second floor are stunning and the apartment is close to the square and restaurants - Finally, the host was very helpful and provided many resources about things to do in the area

Great apartment, stunning mountain village

This is a great place to stay. The apartment is well equipped and very comfortable, with lovely views from the small balcony in the bedroom and the terrace on the top floor. It worked very well and was easily spacious enough for the 5 of us in our party. The modern apartment is in an old house on a lovely quiet street, and is only a couple of minutes walk down to the central square. Grazelema is a beautiful mountain village, and is very well situated for walks and activities in the spectacular mountains (we managed to walk in the early morning despite the very high temperatures this August). You can see Griffon Vultures, Housemartins, and Bats, from the terrace (and lots of stars at night), and we saw more Vultures and Ibex when we walked. There is also a lovely open air public pool in Grazelema. The owner and local keyholder were both very helpful, especially as they had to make special arrangements for us because we booked at extremely short notice (because we had been let down at the last minute by the owner of a different house we had booked to stay in a different town). Thanks to David the owner and Jo the keyholder (and her friend Ana) we were able to stay in this lovely apartment, and we were delighted that we ended up in Grazalema - a fabulous place to stay.

A super, comfortable, spacious apartment in the heart of this pretty and tranquil village. We enjoyed a week here in mid April. The apartment is of a high standard with a well equipped kitchen and great art on the walls. It is cosy with the very efficient under-floor heating and wood burning stove. The terrace is delightful for relaxing and watching the swallows and swifts nearby with the vultures wheeling above the crags opposite. We had excellent hikes, several from the door, within the National Park. There is a good choice of supermarkets, deli and restaurants within a few minutes walk,the bread shop around the corner was a bonus! Ronda is an easy drive, the cave paintings and formations at Cueva de la Pileta above Montjaque were well worth a visit and the stunning drive to get there. We loved our time here.

Fantastic apartment in a magnificent area

We spent a week in this lovely place in late February. Grazalema itself was everything we had expected: an attractive a characterful old town with craggy mountains all around and wonderful walks, scenery and wildlife right on the doorstep. The apartment is in an excellent location near the town centre yet with splendid views of the mountains - we spent a lot of time just watching the Griffon Vultures from the terrace! Despite the season we had no difficulty in finding good restaurants open every night; the bread shop round the corner is handy at breakfast time; the local supermarkets adequate for basics and we got some nice cheese and other specialties in the deli's - and all within a few minutes walk. The apartment itself is very well-appointed, the beds and seats are much more comfortable and supportive than many rented apartments, there is a generous supply of crockery and cutlery and the kitchen has everything you would want. At that time of year Grazalema can be chilly, but we found the underfloor heating adequate on its own, and if you want to be really cosy in the evenings you can also light the wood stove - which is good fun and quite easy. All in all, we firmly recommend this beautiful place and splendid apartment.

We see Grazalema as an attractive village, worth visiting in its own right. But combine this with the scenic landscape, plant life and wildlife of the Grazalema Natural Park and you have a world class destination. It is a great place for couples (young or old) and families to relax or get fit.

We were surprised to find that as well as its many very reasonably-priced bars and restaurants, there were three supermarket and several shops hidden away in a manner which blends in with the local architecture. It is good to see that what was once a fully employed working village has retained its character despite its popularity with Spanish tourists.

We use our hire car to see some outstanding views and places of interest. Ronda (a historic town with a breath-taking deep gorge) is 30 minutes away and can be combined with a tour of Roman ruins with a full amphitheatre near Sentinel.

Some 30 minutes away is a cave system that has a huge entrance. On the east side the cave opens out into a fresh water pool - excellent for summer swimming and easily accessible by car.

We especially enjoy the walking and climbing in the area since it is not often that you can leave your door and be over 1500 metres and back in less than 4 hours


The Grazalema year can look like this:

Spring is an excellent time to visit the village. Wild flowers and greenery are in profusion and the temperature such that walking or climbing can be undertaken all day. Should you wish, to you could also use a local adventure guide company to arrange caving, mountain biking, canoeing or gorge exploration. Alternatively use one of two guidebooks available from the local Tourist Information Office to plan your holiday.

Summer can be hot but we don't really miss the beach. There are plenty of excellent pools in Grazalema and surrounding villages, including fresh water pools and one lakeside resort which offers attractions such as horse riding and zip wire riding..

There are several festivals in the summer: The Carmen festival and the Bull running fill the village with families. Night-time activity is very lively and partying can go on all night should you choose it to! It is great to see families enjoying themselves and children playing freely and being a part of events like the Flamenco dancing, with no trouble or fear. The most important agricultural festivals in Grazalema are held during the third week in August. The eighth day of September is the day of the Virgin of the Angeles, who is the patron saint of Grazalema.

Despite the summer heat we have never encountered mosquitoes in Grazalema.

If we visit In early October we enjoy the Bandoleros festival - Blood and Love (Sangre-y- Amor). Locals in bandit costumes roam the streets in a re-enactment of a time when bandits ruled the mountains. This amazing event attracts families from all over the region. The local car park is transformed into an 18th century village for a week. In October, it is often comfortable to be outside for the whole day and when we feel the need to have a shorter day we enjoy watching the vultures and other bird life from mountain pass or watching the sunset across to the Atlantic from Puerto del Boyar (5 min car journey).

Winter months (Nov-Jan) can be wet but when the sun comes out and the clouds rise there is almost an alpine feeling about the area. We enjoy the wood smoke of the village fires and of our own log-burning stove which makes the apartment feel warm and cosy.

All in all something to do all year round.

We do not have a seasonal rate, nor do we make an charge extra for summer school holidays. An extra charge may be levied at festival times including Christmas/New Year, Early October and mid July.

Changeover Day:
Saturday is the usual changeover day but this may be flexible for full occupancy and short breaks/longer stays.

Notes on prices:
Prices are based on two people sharing. The price is £490 for one week or £350 for 3 days or shorter stays. For each additional person add £42 per week or £30 for a 3 day or shorter stay. A reduction of 15% applies for a full second week booking. No addition charges are made for the summer school holidays. Please check with owner for variations on the above regarding rates for Fiesta times (Christmas/New year/Early October/Mid July).
