About the property

Cottage in Sainte Sabine Born, near Beaumont du Perigord - A Romantic Couples Hideaway Deep In The Dordogne

Mon Coeur is an ideal retreat for couples. This 17th century cottage is set at the far end of a private hamlet with its own entrance, in 17 acres of pasture and plum orchards. It is one of two detached cottages in the hamlet to be let during 2017. 20 minutes south of Bergerac airport and central to all attractions; the cottage of warm honeyed stone and oak beams has one large bedroom, dressing area and bathroom with roll-top bath and separate over-sized shower. Downstairs the open-plan kitchen, diner and lounge lead out through three sets of French doors to a wrap around decked terrace and large private garden. A cedar Soaking Tub built into the decking is set to 32 degrees during the summer to cool off from the heat of the day. For cooler evenings and during Spring and Autumn the Tub can be heated to 35 degrees. You also have access to our fully equipped gymnasium, with a complete range of fitness machines, free weights and CV equipment.

About Gill and Nick

We are an english couple who left the UK to set up a new way of life in rural France.

Gill and Nick purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Gill and Nick chose Beaumont-du-Périgord

We found and bought a small hamlet in 2010 and after gaining permission to establish a group of holiday cottages, we started the process of renovation the following year.

What makes this cottage unique

We are proud of the traditional methods and materials we are using to bring the properties back to their former glory.

We hope that the modern luxuries we add, will result in authentic holiday experiences that capture the essence of the Dordogne; whilst treating our guests to the luxuries they would expect from a top hotel.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Thank you so much for letting us share your wonderful cottage. It is genuinely 5 star and it will be so impressive to see the final development when it is eventually finished. Keep up the great work and good luck with the project."

"Bonjour Gill,

Lovely meeting you yesterday.

I just had to express how blown away I am by the beauty and decadent luxury of Mon Coeur - it has smashed my expectations and the quality of the fittings and fixtures and thoroughness of your provision of essentials and needs is fab.

I have rarely stayed in a place as pleasing in all my travels"

B, 6th - 13th July

"After returning home from our holiday at Mon Coeur, we felt compelled to send a few words to congratulate you on the wonderful haven you have created. It was obvious to see that you have lavished a lot of love and attention to the renovation, which is of outstanding quality, and given a great deal of thought to the needs and comforts of your guests - from the (very) welcome pack, to the fluffy towels and quality bedding. You exceeded our expectations. Thank you so much, see you again soon."

beautifully restored cottage cottage

  • 5 of 5

Myself and my husband have just returned from spending a week in this fabulously restored cottage, no expense has been spared in the renovation and the cottage has retained all the original features. The location was perfect so quiet and restful but only a 5 minute The the nearest village which had two lovely restaurants and a boulangerie. We really enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate in recommending the cottage to any of our friends, thank you to Nick and Gill for a wonderful stay, Jenny and Terry Hall

Just beautiful

  • 5 of 5

Mon coeur was just beautiful. The owners had thought of everything including air con which really helped in the heat. It was all the little details that made it really special. We spent most of our time on the deck, between the loungers, the Tub and the hammock. Some great restaurants close by and a lovely market on Sundays. We can highly recommend this cottage and will definitely return.

Peaceful - and Perfect in Every Way

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cottage and will definitely be back. The setting is very rural, Mon Coeur is surrounded by plum trees and fields of sunflowers, cars come along the little road only very rarely. The cottage has been beautifully done up, not only looks fabulous but is incredibly comfortable. Gill and Nick very generous hosts, Molten Brown in the bathroom, wine in the fridge, fruit in the fruit bowl. Hot tub - hot and clean. Wonderful decked area. Sun and shade. Everything you could possibly want in the cottage - even Sky television so we could watch Wimbledon!

Straight out of French Country Home & Garden mag

  • 5 of 5

We had a great holiday in this beautifully furnished home. Downstairs was a good kitchen and spacious lounge with TV with all the UK Sky channels. Upstairs it had a very comfortable bed and a super bathroom. In the 38C heat while we were there, the air-con in the lounge and bedroom was greatly appreciated, although in this heat the hot tub got very little use. We love the privacy of staying in independent houses in the countryside and this suited the bill perfectly. There is a small village 2 minutes drive away with a bakers and 2 fine restaurants and we particularly loved the one with a Michelin star. There are two lovely towns with good shops and weekly markets at 7 and 15 minutes drive. It was an opportunity to get to know some lesser known French towns and villages which we loved, especially Monpazier. We were there in June and loved the drive to these nearby towns as the small roads were empty and wound their way through fields of golden corn and sunflowers just ready to flower and display in July.

In response to an email I mentioned that a few TV channels were not working and it was fixed immediately.

We would highly recommend this cottage.

Wonderful cottage in a beautiful corner of France

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a fabulous week's holiday at Mon Ceour and it was like a real home from home - we were quite sorry to leave.

The cottage is beautifully restored and very well equipped as well as tastefully furnished. You have absolutely everything you need. And the owners made us very comfortable with thoughtful details like the croissants, milk and fruit for the first mornings breakfast, the coffee machine with lots of capsules, and the lovely Molton Brown smellies in the bathroom.

There's even cleaning products, tin foil, cling film and olive oil, the sorts of things you don't really want to buy when you are away but you really can't do without!

I particularly loved the herbs on the decking area, just like being at home, except the rosemary is doing a lot better than mine!

We spent a couple of days lazing around and relaxing at the cottage and the weather at the end of March was just perfect. Chilly in the breeze in the mornings and evenings but hot in the sun during the day. The hot tub and the hammock were both very welcome!

Also Gill had left us with firewood for the stove and we lit it one evening for a very cosy night in.

The cottage is in a great location for exploring the south Dordogne area. Issigeac is 10mins drive away, it's a very pretty little town with a great market on Sunday morning. We also had a delicious meal there one evening at La Bruceliere.

We also ate one evening at Chez Edith in the local village Sainte Sabine. We had the place to ourselves, and the food was very nice. I imagine the atmosphere gets quite buzzy later in the season.

We really enjoyed how quiet everywhere was at this time of year. The touristy towns were very easy to park up in and the roads were a pleasure to drive on. Weather not too hot, and everywhere just starting to go green, what a lovely time of year!

If you are looking for a peaceful break in the Dordogne then look no further. Thoroughly recommended!

Outstanding relaxation, beautifully equipped

  • 5 of 5

Mon Coeur is a beautifully done barn conversion in a very quiet area of the south Dordogne. It's very well equipped with hot tub, lovely kitchen, fantastic bathroom etc - but also with little touches like mosquito coils so you can sit out on the terrace in the evening without being bitten to death. If I had one slight quibble it'd be that the aircon units are downstairs and the loft room (bedroom) therefore can stay quite warm at night - if you don't mind sleeping under just a sheet it's not really a problem though.

If you're looking for somewhere within immediate striking distance of bustling cities or high culture then this isn't it - but if you just want a perfect country retreat where you can wind back the pace of life to something close to zero then this is the place for you. Within half an hour to an hour's drive you have the Dordogne river itself with kayaking or canoeing available, as well as plenty of chateaux with accompanying vineyards and pretty medieval villages. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Andrew. Just to clarify Mon Coeur is not a barn conversion. This is an original Perigourd cottage that was in ruins when we found it. We have simply brought it back to life and given it some of the modern comforts. Although as you say there are some limitiations ie the height of the air con units in the deeply sloping roof. Gill

Nearest Airport
12 Miles

Bergerac airport is just 20 minutes from Mon Coeur cottage. If you decide to fly then it will be essential to hire a car, as the property is very rural and public transport is limited. All the major car hire firms operate from Bergerac airport.

If you decide to drive from the Uk, then channel ferries from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth sail regularly and the drive down is approx 650km and takes about 7 hours.

Mon Coeur lies in the centre of four beautiful places.

Villereal is a bastide town 5 minutes to the South of the cottage, and ideal for supplies with shops and supermarket.

Issigeac is a beautiful village just 10 minutes to the West, and has the largest market in the area every Sunday morning.

Beaumont du Perigord is a beautiful bastide town 10 minutes to the north with a cobbled square of cafes and bars.

Monpazier 20 minutes to the East is known as the finest bastide town in France!

Further Details:

Mon Coeur is centrally placed for all the main tourist attractions in the Dordogne and Lot et Garonne.

The village of Sainte Sabine Born, is a 2 minute drive from the cottage, or a 15 minute stroll. Although small, it has a bakery, pizza parlour and and two very good restaurants:

'Chez Edith', which has a beautiful outside terrace and serves as the local bar, coffee shop and restaurant with great well-priced food, and

'Etincelles', which is a Michelin starred restaurant in the small hotel La Gentilhommiere , and is rated 4.5/5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Villereal has a full size supermarket open from 9am to 7pm without closing for lunch, and a Carrefour open till late, and Sunday mornings. There are also plenty of specialist shops in the market square, an exquisite patisserie shop, and a pharmacy. A Saturday morning market sells a large selection of fresh produce - although the market at Issigeac Sunday morning has the largest selection of produce and artisan products in the area. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars at Villereal with outside seating to soak up the sun or recline in the shade. If you have any medical problems, there are also two english speaking doctors.

The cottage is also at the heart of the 'Route des Chateaux', the driving routes around the fairy tale castles of the Dordogne; and is only 25 minutes from the beautiful Chateau Biron, and 45 minutes from the amazing Chateau Bonaguil.

If you would prefer to laze away an afternoon in a canoe or on a boat trip along the Dordogne river then Bergerac is only 20 minutes away. The old town of Bergerac is a great place to eat before the boat trip with some excellent restaurants set within a beautiful collection of mediaeval houses.

The UNESCO heritage site of Les Eysies de Tayac is only 50 minutes from the cottage, and is an acclaimed site of prehistoric rock dwellings and cave paintings.
