Renovated 17th Century Cottage For Two With Private Gardens And Cedar Hot Tub

Updated: 06-Nov-2016
Cottage in Sainte Sabine Born, near Beaumont du Perigord - A Romantic Couples Hideaway Deep In The Dordogne

Mon Coeur is an ideal retreat for couples or two friends. This 17th century detached cottage is set at the far end of a private hamlet with its own entrance, in 17 acres of pasture and plum orchards. It is one of two cottages in the hamlet to be let during 2015. 20 minutes south of Bergerac airport and central to all attractions. The cottage of warm honeyed stone and oak beams has one large bedroom, dressing area and bathroom with roll-top bath and separate over-sized shower. Downstairs the open-plan kitchen, diner and lounge lead out through three sets of French doors to a wrap around decked terrace and large private garden. A cedar Soaking Tub built into the decking is set to 32 degrees during the summer to cool off from the heat of the day. For cooler evenings and during Spring and Autumn the Tub can be heated to 35 degrees. You also have access to our fully equipped gymnasium, with a complete range of fitness machines, free weights and CV equipment.

"Thank you so much for letting us share your wonderful cottage. It is genuinely 5 star and it will be so impressive to see the final development when it is eventually finished. Keep up the great work and good luck with the project."

"Bonjour Gill,

Lovely meeting you yesterday.

I just had to express how blown away I am by the beauty and decadent luxury of Mon Coeur - it has smashed my expectations and the quality of the fittings and fixtures and thoroughness of your provision of essentials and needs is fab.

I have rarely stayed in a place as pleasing in all my travels"

"After returning home from our holiday at Mon Coeur, we felt compelled to send a few words to congratulate you on the wonderful haven you have created. It was obvious to see that you have lavished a lot of love and attention to the renovation, which is of outstanding quality, and given a great deal of thought to the needs and comforts of your guests - from the (very) welcome pack, to the fluffy towels and quality bedding. You exceeded our expectations. Thank you so much, see you again soon."

Outstanding relaxation, beautifully equipped

  • 5 of 5

Mon Coeur is a beautifully done barn conversion in a very quiet area of the south Dordogne. It's very well equipped with hot tub, lovely kitchen, fantastic bathroom etc - but also with little touches like mosquito coils so you can sit out on the terrace in the evening without being bitten to death. If I had one slight quibble it'd be that the aircon units are downstairs and the loft room (bedroom) therefore can stay quite warm at night - if you don't mind sleeping under just a sheet it's not really a problem though.

If you're looking for somewhere within immediate striking distance of bustling cities or high culture then this isn't it - but if you just want a perfect country retreat where you can wind back the pace of life to something close to zero then this is the place for you. Within half an hour to an hour's drive you have the Dordogne river itself with kayaking or canoeing available, as well as plenty of chateaux with accompanying vineyards and pretty medieval villages. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Andrew. Just to clarify Mon Coeur is not a barn conversion. This is an original Perigourd cottage that was in ruins when we found it. We have simply brought it back to life and given it some of the modern comforts. Although as you say there are some limitiations ie the height of the air con units in the deeply sloping roof. Gill

Best gites ever

  • 5 of 5

In 28 years of holidaying in France we can honestly say that this is the best and most well appointed gite that we have ever stayed in.

It contains everything that you would hope for and a few other bits and pieces you may not think of. Gill and Nik leave you to your own devices but should you need to get in touch they come back to you very quickly.

It is the first holiday that we have been on where we definitely didn't want to come home.

Absolutely no hesitation in recommending Mon Coeur to anybody. Will definitely be back.

Private romantic cottage for 2. Great location.

  • 5 of 5

Me and my husband have just come back from staying at Mon Coeur. The cottage is beautiful and very clean inside. The kitchin has everything you need for your stay. Gill and nick left us a welcome pack so we had supplies in the morning.

They don't encroach on your privacy, but if you need anything they are there. The king size bed is very comfy and everything is clean. The location is perfect as you have Villereal which is 6k away ,which is a old market town that have all the shops you need. Saturdays they have a very good market day there. Issigaec 15 minutes drive. Eymet 20minutes drive. 1k away is the village it has a good restaurant called Chez Edith that do lovely food, the bar area is lovely too. They have 2 more restaurants plus a little bakers that sell lovely bread. Location wise it's perfect. As the cottage is private but not remote. It is set on 17 acres of private land. Lovely views of the plum trees. The owners have put a lot of thought into the renovation of the cottage. It's perfect if you want to escape the rat race in the UK.

It has a hot tub too, but unfortunately we never got to use it, as it was a working holiday looking for a house..

I would highly recommend staying here at gill and nick retreat.

Stunning tranquility with 5* luxury

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Mon Couer, our first being September 2014.

The location is stunning & only 20 mins from Bergerac airport, with lots of towns/villages en route for getting supplies & wine to start your holiday off!

The gite, as before, was exceptionally clean & well maintained, with sheet & towel changes during our two week stay provided. Fantastic luxury toiletries are also provided, with the cosiest bathrobes for when you step out of the roll-top bath. The super-king bed is great for us as so few places offer them & we really miss ours when we're away from home, except when we come here.

Gill & Nick are always around & about if needed & the guest booklet in the gite is packed with lots of tips & details of places worth a visit. There are some truly fantastic restaurants nearby which are very reasonably priced considering the quality of the food & wine. If you are a foodie, then this is the ideal place to locate from.

The location is one of the nicest we have visited, there is no traffic noise all you can hear are birds & the odd cow having a moo. Proper peace & quiet time.

It's the only place we have ever visited more than once on holiday!

Stunning ...5 star class and total relaxation...

  • 5 of 5

Booked this cottage for a two week 'chill out' and total relaxation ... which is what we got. The moment we opened the door my wife said,"It's stunning". Everything about the accommodation was first class down to the smallest detail. It is the place to book if you want a location to relax. The owners Nik and Gill leave you in complete peace but were always at the end of a text message if there was anything needed.

We hired bikes for the two weeks and saw quite a bit of the countryside. Many fabulous restaurants within 20 minutes drive with a local restaurant in the village which we used on many occasions. The Dordogne River towns are about 30 minute drive away, from where we got the train to Bordeaux for the day.

The best recommendation we can make is ... we never return to the same place, but this is the exception we will be returning to this cottage. Thank you Nik and Gill.

From the Owner

We found and bought a small hamlet in 2010 and after gaining permission to establish a group of holiday cottages, we started the process of renovation the following year.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Bergerac at 12 Miles

Bergerac airport is just 20 minutes from Mon Coeur cottage. If you decide to fly then it will be essential to hire a car, as the property is very rural and public transport is limited. All the major car hire firms operate from Bergerac airport.

If you decide to drive from the Uk, then channel ferries from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth sail regularly and the drive down is approx 650km and takes about 7 hours.

Mon Coeur lies in the centre of four beautiful places.

Villereal is a bastide town 5 minutes to the South of the cottage, and ideal for supplies with shops and supermarket.

Issigeac is a beautiful village just 10 minutes to the West, and has the largest market in the area every Sunday morning.

Beaumont du Perigord is a beautiful bastide town 10 minutes to the north with a cobbled square of cafes and bars.

Monpazier 20 minutes to the East is known as the finest bastide town in France!

Further Details:

Mon Coeur is centrally placed for all the main tourist attractions in the Dordogne and Lot et Garonne.

The village of Sainte Sabine Born, is a 2 minute drive from the cottage, or a 15 minute stroll. Although small, it has a bakery, pizza parlour and and two very good restaurants:

'Chez Edith', which has a beautiful outside terrace and serves as the local bar, coffee shop and restaurant with great well-priced food, and

'Etincelles', which is a Michelin starred restaurant in the small hotel La Gentilhommiere , and is rated 4.5/5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Villereal has a full size supermarket open from 9am to 7pm without closing for lunch, and a Carrefour open till late, and Sunday mornings. There are also plenty of specialist shops in the market square, an exquisite patisserie shop, and a pharmacy. A Saturday morning market sells a large selection of fresh produce - although the market at Issigeac Sunday morning has the largest selection of produce and artisan products in the area. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars at Villereal with outside seating to soak up the sun or recline in the shade. If you have any medical problems, there are also two english speaking doctors.

The cottage is also at the heart of the 'Route des Chateaux', the driving routes around the fairy tale castles of the Dordogne; and is only 25 minutes from the beautiful Chateau Biron, and 45 minutes from the amazing Chateau Bonaguil.

If you would prefer to laze away an afternoon in a canoe or on a boat trip along the Dordogne river then Bergerac is only 20 minutes away. The old town of Bergerac is a great place to eat before the boat trip with some excellent restaurants set within a beautiful collection of mediaeval houses.

The UNESCO heritage site of Les Eysies de Tayac is only 50 minutes from the cottage, and is an acclaimed site of prehistoric rock dwellings and cave paintings.
