About Deborah Wheatley

This cottage was bought to be my personal bolt hole when visiting England and also a home to share with my friends and family as I am currently living in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I have dual British and American citizenship having moved to the USA 17 years ago.

The cottage is my personal pride and joy and it will be a pleasure for me to share it with you.

Deborah Wheatley purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Deborah Wheatley chose Saffron Walden

I fell in love with the cottage in 2012 while visiting Saffron Walden; it was so pretty with roses around the door and only a 5 minute walk from the town's restaurants and shops. I had lived in Saffron Walden before moving to Chicago, USA in 1999 and now live in Fort Lauderdale , Florida. I am very happy to have bought the cottage with a view to my husband and I retiring there in a few years time.

I love Saffron Walden with its historic centre and market place and the cottage's location, though in a very quiet street, is only a few minutes from the shops, market place, pubs and restaurants making it unnecessary to drive anywhere when in town. The cottage is only 25 minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge and a 45 minute train ride to the London Underground.

What makes this cottage unique

If you are looking for a romantic period cottage to spend a week or weekend this cottage is an ideal match. 15th century charm with brand new plumbing, kitchen and bathrooms.

It's location between Cambridge and London make it an ideal base for visiting the UK as the Audley End train station with its regular service to both cities is a 10 minute drive away making it unnecessary to drive into the cities. It is also perfectly situated for touring the East Anglia area including Suffolk and Norfolk.

The cottage oozes character from every beam and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Audley End Park is only a 5 minute walk away from the cottage meaning you can enjoy the English countryside as well as all that the town itself offers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We returned yesterday from such a special week at Drake Cottage, we all adored your home and the way it was fitted out and decorated. Lucy was more than helpful and was on hand to welcome us on the 22nd, We were so happy there over Christmas. The restoration you have done is so authentic and in keeping with the cottage

In short, we were so sorry to leave, you have such a magical place there." Peter M December 2013

"Seriously, I can honestly say that it is as good as it can be and there are no other improvements I would make or suggest. We have fallen in love with Drake Cottage. We look forward to using it as a Saffron Walden base in the future, bookings permitting, as I just know once word gets properly out you and it will be very popular. Thank you for your kindness." Lovely cottage, excellent location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage has been recently renovated to a high standard, and is warm and cosy. It is well equipped. Bath robes are provided as well as nice fluffy towels. The housekeeper is friendly and helpful. It is a very short and pleasant walk to the Fry Gallery, Bridge Gardens and the centre of town.

You need to be aware that the upstairs rooms are quite small, with various low beams to look out for, and the stairs are small, steep and twisty. We managed OK (aged 60, 64, 69 and 89!) but do take note of the warnings given in the description if you are tall/large or not very mobile. However the structure can be considered part of the overall charm of the cottage.

Marvellous cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our kids and we adults loved our stay at Drake Cottage with lots of cute details to be discovered. Everything was very clean, the kitchen well equipped. The rooms were larger than what we expected

from the pictures, however, for tall people it might be difficult to get up the stairs.

Owner's Response: Dear Claudia, Thank you for your kind review and so glad you enjoyed your stay at Drake Cottage. The stairs and landing can be a bit challenging for those who are very tall; however my 6'5" son in law somehow managed to stay at the cottage without once bumping his head ; still not quite sure how he managed that as I always manage to bumpy my head at least once whenever I get to stay. I will pass on your complements to Lucy regarding her wonderful housekeeping; she is the best. Come back and visit us soon.

Character cottage in beautiful part of Saffron Walden

  • 5 of 5

Best accommodation in Saffron Walden. Friendly and helpful owner and great housekeeper, always available for any queries. This 14th century cottage oozes charm, located in a peaceful and quiet part of SF, yet close to centre. All mod cons available, especially the kitchen is a gem! Free

parking very close. I would recommend this cottage wholeheartedly. Great for families but also for couples or even one person, as one feels "at home" straightaway .

Owner's Response: Hi Petronella, thank you for the lovely review of your recent stay at Drake Cottage; we love having our repeat stay visitors and both Lucy, our housekeeper and myself think of all our guests as friends coming to stay with us. The only problem is that it makes my husband and I jump on the next flight and stay at the cottage ourselves :-) Do let me know if there is anything at all that would have made your stay an even better one.

Well equipped, clean and homely

  • 5 of 5

Everything about staying in this cottage was easy. The booking process, communication with the owner and the housekeeper, directions, key location, information in the cottage etc. I have never booked a break away with so little stress!!

Without overdoing it, it is fair to say the cottage was perfect. The tea tray and pint of milk on arrival were a welcome sight after a long drive, it was warm and spotlessly clean. The cottage is in a great location, to be able to walk into the centre to have a meal locally of an evening was lovely, but tucked away around the corner it was also very quiet.

Practically the cottage has everything you would need from kitchen essentials to a hairdryer. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning.

Owner's Response: Dear Helen, Thank you so much for your very kind and generous review. I am always so excited to hear that our guests love Drake Cottage as much as my husband and I do. Sometimes we get quite jealous that we don't get to use it as much as we would like to. Do though let us know if there is anything we could have done to make your stay an even better one, even if its just down to a missing piece of equipment in the kitchen. The only way we can improve is if you let us know. Before getting this review I got to hear that you are coming to visit us again; so pleased that you are joining our list of repeat guests; we love having you return to the cottage; in fact over 40% of our guests come back for another visit which is just lovely as it makes it feel that we are sharing the cottage with good friends :-) Best wishes Deb
