About Deborah Wheatley

This cottage was bought to be my personal bolt hole when visiting England and also a home to share with my friends and family as I am currently living in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I have dual British and American citizenship having moved to the USA 17 years ago.

The cottage is my personal pride and joy and it will be a pleasure for me to share it with you.

Deborah Wheatley purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Deborah Wheatley chose Essex

I fell in love with the cottage in 2012 while visiting Saffron Walden; it was so pretty with roses around the door and only a 5 minute walk from the town's restaurants and shops. I had lived in Saffron Walden before moving to Chicago, USA in 1999 and now live in Fort Lauderdale , Florida. I am very happy to have bought the cottage with a view to my husband and I retiring there in a few years time.

I love Saffron Walden with its historic centre and market place and the cottage's location, though in a very quiet street, is only a few minutes from the shops, market place, pubs and restaurants making it unnecessary to drive anywhere when in town. The cottage is only 25 minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge and a 45 minute train ride to the London Underground.

What makes this cottage unique

If you are looking for a romantic period cottage to spend a week or weekend this cottage is an ideal match. 15th century charm with brand new plumbing, kitchen and bathrooms.

It's location between Cambridge and London make it an ideal base for visiting the UK as the Audley End train station with its regular service to both cities is a 10 minute drive away making it unnecessary to drive into the cities. It is also perfectly situated for touring the East Anglia area including Suffolk and Norfolk.

The cottage oozes character from every beam and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Audley End Park is only a 5 minute walk away from the cottage meaning you can enjoy the English countryside as well as all that the town itself offers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We returned yesterday from such a special week at Drake Cottage, we all adored your home and the way it was fitted out and decorated. Lucy was more than helpful and was on hand to welcome us on the 22nd, We were so happy there over Christmas. The restoration you have done is so authentic and in keeping with the cottage

In short, we were so sorry to leave, you have such a magical place there." Peter M December 2013

"Seriously, I can honestly say that it is as good as it can be and there are no other improvements I would make or suggest. We have fallen in love with Drake Cottage. We look forward to using it as a Saffron Walden base in the future, bookings permitting, as I just know once word gets properly out you and it will be very popular. Thank you for your kindness." Incredibly, we will be opening up the calendar for 2018 bookings in the next few days. Do let me know if there was anything you weren't happy with or any equipment in the kitchen that you needed and didn't have. We only get to improve if guests like you are kind enough to comment. We look forward to welcoming you back to Drake Cottage in the very near future. Best wishes Deb

The only place to stay in Saffron Walden.

  • 5 of 5

Prepared by excellent communications between Deb Wheatley and ourselves beforehand, we enjoyed the fine holiday we expected.

The cottage's great character, it's position in the town, the friendliness of the town's inhabitants, the fascinating Fry Gallery and the surrounding characterful and culturally rich villages, galleries etc.made the week very special!

Fabulous character cottage in superb location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very well presented for a period cottage and was full of charm but also full of every little thing we could have wanted in a home stay. Well set up kitchen, cute little private garden, efficient hot water, comfy beds and plenty of space downstairs even for a family of 5. A few short steps to town and right next to the magnificent church. Quiet at night and convenient in the daytime. Parking a small challenge but so many big pluses that we just dealt with it by parking the car elsewhere when we had it. The dishwasher was a real bonus even though we filled it with the wrong soap Lucy helped set us straight the next day. Even our big teenager was very comfortable on the pull out settee bed downstairs. Even the bumps on the head from the low ceiling and doors were a charming part of the experience and we would highly recommend the place and certainly stay there again on a return visit to the area. Perfect location for day trips to London and Cambridge and Saffron Walden is a perfect little market town with several great restaurants and cute shops. If you are not from the area then try Duxford Air Museum, Punting on the River cam, day trips to London! The pre conversations with property owner Deb were always useful and kind and Lucy the housekeeper was brilliant. We loved everything.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your very kind review. I had already heard from Lucy, our wonderful housekeeper, about the wrong soap being used in the dishwasher which did make me laugh - a lot ; I'm going to get Lucy to label them from now on- can't be having any of our wonderful guests getting wrong footed. So very glad that you love Drake Cottage as much as we do and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best wishes from Deb.

Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed in Drake Cottage for three nights and wished that we'd booked for longer. The cottage itself is amazing, dating from the late 1400s, yet has been tastefully upgraded with every modern convenience. Both bedrooms are large and the beds comfortable, and having two bathrooms was much appreciated. A lovely perk is the private yard out back for a morning coffee.

Saffron Walden is such a quaint village with everything you need from cafes to a large Waitrose grocery store. Day trips to Cambridge, Lavenham and Coggeshall are easy from this location.

Would love to stay here again.

Three nights at this charming cottage in the ancient town of Saffron Walden. We absolutely loved it. Restored and renovated to a very high degree but also retaining its integrity as a timber frame cottage. The kitchen and bathrooms are modern but have been well thought out to fit in with the overall interior. Spotless, comfortable, cosy and everything you could require for self-catering.

Two points I should mention...the VERY awkward stairs and the low upstairs beams. We soon got used to the beams but the stairs (as no downstairs toilet ) had to be taken very slowly and with care! Not great for those of us with dodgy knees and back!! However!.. we coped and are already planning to see if we can book later in the year!!!

The town has so much to offer (especially if you are interested in architecture)Bridge Street Gardens are wonderful and Audley End is an amazing day out.

Would I recommend it?? Absolutely!!! As long as you are fairly mobile!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review of our much loved Drake Cottage and we would love to welcome you back later on in the year. So glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Many of our guests are now repeat customers which makes it lovely to do business. We try very hard to warn people about the narrow and quirky stairs and the low beams and trust me I've bumped my head a few times myself; it's normally when I get a bit blasé about taking care.I think I know the height and then ouch. Those beams are most unforgiving. It does all add to the cottage's charm but we do strongly recommend that anyone with disabilities does not attempt a stay at the cottage. The previous owner of the cottage loved it so much and managed the stairs until into his 80's but not sure I'll manage that. I hope to though :-) We also recommend that you don't bring large suitcases as they are difficult to maneuver up and round the staircase .
