About Deborah Wheatley

This cottage was bought to be my personal bolt hole when visiting England and also a home to share with my friends and family as I am currently living in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I have dual British and American citizenship having moved to the USA 17 years ago.

The cottage is my personal pride and joy and it will be a pleasure for me to share it with you.

Deborah Wheatley purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Deborah Wheatley chose Essex

I fell in love with the cottage in 2012 while visiting Saffron Walden; it was so pretty with roses around the door and only a 5 minute walk from the town's restaurants and shops. I had lived in Saffron Walden before moving to Chicago, USA in 1999 and now live in Fort Lauderdale , Florida. I am very happy to have bought the cottage with a view to my husband and I retiring there in a few years time.

I love Saffron Walden with its historic centre and market place and the cottage's location, though in a very quiet street, is only a few minutes from the shops, market place, pubs and restaurants making it unnecessary to drive anywhere when in town. The cottage is only 25 minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge and a 45 minute train ride to the London Underground.

What makes this cottage unique

If you are looking for a romantic period cottage to spend a week or weekend this cottage is an ideal match. 15th century charm with brand new plumbing, kitchen and bathrooms.

It's location between Cambridge and London make it an ideal base for visiting the UK as the Audley End train station with its regular service to both cities is a 10 minute drive away making it unnecessary to drive into the cities. It is also perfectly situated for touring the East Anglia area including Suffolk and Norfolk.

The cottage oozes character from every beam and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Audley End Park is only a 5 minute walk away from the cottage meaning you can enjoy the English countryside as well as all that the town itself offers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We returned yesterday from such a special week at Drake Cottage, we all adored your home and the way it was fitted out and decorated. Lucy was more than helpful and was on hand to welcome us on the 22nd, We were so happy there over Christmas. The restoration you have done is so authentic and in keeping with the cottage

In short, we were so sorry to leave, you have such a magical place there." Peter M December 2013

"Seriously, I can honestly say that it is as good as it can be and there are no other improvements I would make or suggest. We have fallen in love with Drake Cottage. We look forward to using it as a Saffron Walden base in the future, bookings permitting, as I just know once word gets properly out you and it will be very popular. Thank you for your kindness." the most beautiful Holiday accomodation we ever had. Very polite and helpful owner and housekeeper, also very polite and openminded neighbours around the Cottage. We enjoyed our stay so much and looking forward to come back again. All our friends requested the link from us, when they saw the lovely pictures from in -and outside the cottage.

Thanks a lot again to Deb and Lucy

Owner's Response: Dear Gerald and Kirsten, Wow - what an amazing review of Drake Cottage and so very glad that you loved the cottage as much as we do. We look forward to you returning to the cottage in the future. Lucy, our housekeeper, is wonderful and does the most amazing job of looking after our guests and keeping the cottage to the highest standards; we are so lucky to have her on our team :-) Thank you again for choosing Drake Cottage for your stay in Saffron Walden.

Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed in Drake Cottage for three nights and wished that we'd booked for longer. The cottage itself is amazing, dating from the late 1400s, yet has been tastefully upgraded with every modern convenience. Both bedrooms are large and the beds comfortable, and having two bathrooms was much appreciated. A lovely perk is the private yard out back for a morning coffee.

Saffron Walden is such a quaint village with everything you need from cafes to a large Waitrose grocery store. Day trips to Cambridge, Lavenham and Coggeshall are easy from this location.

Would love to stay here again.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Three nights at this charming cottage in the ancient town of Saffron Walden. We absolutely loved it. Restored and renovated to a very high degree but also retaining its integrity as a timber frame cottage. The kitchen and bathrooms are modern but have been well thought out to fit in with the overall interior. Spotless, comfortable, cosy and everything you could require for self-catering.

Two points I should mention...the VERY awkward stairs and the low upstairs beams. We soon got used to the beams but the stairs (as no downstairs toilet ) had to be taken very slowly and with care! Not great for those of us with dodgy knees and back!! However!.. we coped and are already planning to see if we can book later in the year!!!

The town has so much to offer (especially if you are interested in architecture)Bridge Street Gardens are wonderful and Audley End is an amazing day out.

Would I recommend it?? Absolutely!!! As long as you are fairly mobile!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review of our much loved Drake Cottage and we would love to welcome you back later on in the year. So glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Many of our guests are now repeat customers which makes it lovely to do business. We try very hard to warn people about the narrow and quirky stairs and the low beams and trust me I've bumped my head a few times myself; it's normally when I get a bit blasé about taking care.I think I know the height and then ouch. Those beams are most unforgiving. It does all add to the cottage's charm but we do strongly recommend that anyone with disabilities does not attempt a stay at the cottage. The previous owner of the cottage loved it so much and managed the stairs until into his 80's but not sure I'll manage that. I hope to though :-) We also recommend that you don't bring large suitcases as they are difficult to maneuver up and round the staircase .

Very nice renovation of cottage in great location of which we were unaware and we lived in the town

  • 5 of 5

3 of us stayed/ eight played. We hosted 8 on Saturdayand comfortably fit at large table in open concept kitchen/ dining area. All friends appreciated the venue and agree we will use it for our next if available. My 2 tall friends found the height of stairwell and upper floor bit of a challenge in their late 60's but would be happy to stay again. My self being of more hobbit like dimensions was unplussed by low ceilings. Very comfortable beds and well stocked kitchen. Nice part of town slightly away from center but conveniently located, Neighbors very friendly and parked in front of cottage. Memorable time with friends of 47 years.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your wonderful review. Interestingly, I had lived in Saffron Walden and local villages for over fourteen years and visited the town at least once a year after our move to the States and I didn't know this particular corner of the town existed either. I was walking a friend's dog when I came across the cottage and said "one day I'm going to buy that cottage I love it so much" and lo and behold it came on the market months later. A race across the Atlantic and Drake Cottage was ours. So glad you loved it as much as we do and thrilled that all of you were able to get together and enjoy it . Those beams on the landing are always going to be a challenge to all but our shortest guests, but they do add to the charm without a shadow of a doubt. Drake Cottage has such a wonderful and happy atmosphere and I suspect you just added a little more. Come back and visit us again soon.

Gem of a property

  • 5 of 5

This is a gorgeous cottage! It is truly quaint but with a modern kitchen, ensuite and bathroom. Spotlessly clean! Lucy, the housekeeper was there to greet us, give us the key and show us around. The location is superb being minutes on foot from the town centre. Absolutely couldn't fault this rental and would love to return for a longer stay. Would recommend to anyone. Superb!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your very kind review of Drake Cottage. We would of course, love to welcome you back in the future but please remember to book ahead for those summer months as we just had to turn down a previous guest who wanted to come in June and we love our repeat guests. Every time we read a lovely review we want to race back over the Atlantic to spend time there ourselves - thank you again.
