The Cottage is located on a small hill-top situated just a 2 minute drive from the centre of the very pretty village of Nanteuil-en-Vallee, documented as one of the most picturesque villages in the Charente region. This "Village Fleurie" is also rich in architecture, drawing visitors throughout the year and featured in many guide books. One of its main attractions is the 12th century Benedictine Abbey built on a site originally founded by Charlemagne, but this lovely Medieval Village also provides all amenities and has 2 fabulous restaurants with attractive outside dining-areas in Summer as well as a traditional Pizzeria take-away restaurant. One of the restaurants also has a Bar and offers Live Music on certain dates throughout the year. The Abbey also caters for a spectacular outside musical event usually held in August and a wonderful medieval spectacle in June, especially nice for children. The immediate countryside all around the Cottage displays miles of open rolling countryside, with hill-top views and is also a great location for family bike-rides as well as cycling enthusiasts as the small hill-top provides great cycling opportunities plus lots of flat routes all around. There are plenty of country walks to be enjoyed and in the evenings you can witness some wonderful sunsets and night skies of amazing clarity from the hill-top views, as well as often spotting wild roe-deer in the distance. At a very short distance from the Cottage there are lots of activities for both children and adults, including horse-riding and tennis as well as canoeing/kayak trips, fishing and swimming. There is also a fabulous English-run Beauty Salon very close by with a good choice of facial treatments, massages etc. available. Having previously taught both French and English in International schools in Geneva and France, at the Cottage I can also offer French lessons free of charge and/or help with school-work revision to young people and/or adults. Andy also offers introduction music lessons free of charge. The tranquil location of the Cottage guarantees a relaxing holiday, yet our pretty village is full of atmosphere and less than an hours drive to the 2 popular cities of Angouleme and Poitiers. Poitiers in particulier offers fabulous days out to its world-famous Futoroscope 3-D Cinematic Theme Park, a great day-out for families . There is also some stunning architecture in Poitiers as well as good shopping and restaurants. Close to the Cottage you can also enjoy the local leisure-beaches and picturesque river picnic-spots where you can take canoeing trips on the Charente river or perhaps visit the nearby open-air Monkey Park where for younger children it's good fun to feed and observe the Monkeys in their natural habitat. Alternatively, there is a good and varied choice of beach days out to choose from, in particular the coastal towns of La Rochelle and Royan which both have fabulous beaches and lots of activities for the whole family One hours drive also takes you to the well known City of Cognac with its "Musée des Arts du Cognac", boat-trips and distilleries. There are also some truly stunning Châteaux available to visit in the surrounding towns and villages as well as several good French Markets + a weekly Farmers market offering plentiful local produce. This is an idyllic location where you can truly relax at home with a good meal or a glass of something special, or easily venture out to the pretty local villages and surrounding areas. Both Poitiers and Limoges Airports are an easy 1 hour drive away. Bordeaux International Airport is 2 hours.

About the Owner

Having radically altered our former professional lives to wind down and savour this wonderful area of France, we have no regrets. Previously, I worked for the World Health Organization, an International Agency in Geneva but also taught French & English in an International Junior School for 3 years. Over the years we have acquired a lot of knowledge regarding property in the area and I now currently work independantly with a local Estate Agency. Andy is in the Music Industry. For us, living in this truly picturesque village of Nanteuil-en-Vallee and surrounding area has never once disappointed, on the contrary, every day here displays time and time again the authentic beauty of this fabulous Charente region and the quality of life here.

Lovely hosts and fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

I spent the month of August at this gorgeous Gite - and would highly recommend it.

On arrival Sarah and Andrew welcomed us warmly! A guided tour of the property was conducted professionally and it was clear that if I had any further questions they would be on hand to answer them.

The description of the house and facilities was accurate and it was exactly as I expected. The photos clearly detail the property and the house was clean and well appointed.

The walk in to the village is down (and up) a steep hill - my husband walked it most days with our dogs and loved walking around the village and arboretum!

The master bedroom has a good sized bed - it is comfortable and when we commented how hot it was at night Sarah provided a fan!

A lovely gite in a very good location - we drove to La Rochelle and Cognac. Villages close by are pretty and there is a good variety of restaurants to chose from! if you really want a treat try 'La Range aux oies' - not cheap but what a place! The village of Nanteuill en Vallee has two good restaurants and a pizzeria (we used all of them)!

We had extremely hot weather and made good use of the BBQ! and the pool so did not do as much sight seeing as others may do but there is a lot of choice without travelling too far.

Would I recommend this piece of heaven to others - YES - but please let me book first!!!!

The perfect rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

On arrival we was greeted by Sarah & Andy who were the perfect hosts throughout. Never intrusive but always on hand.

The property itself is as good if not better than the pictures. A truly charming cottage with glorious grounds surrounding, all perfectly maintained & spotlessly clean. Set at the top of a winding round, just a few minutes from the picturesque village which has a couple of well stocked small shops & 2 very nice restaurants.

Further afield, a 10-15 min drive takes you into Ruffec which has larger supermarkets, all the shops & bars which you could wish for, & even a drive through MacDonalds!

This was truly the perfect holiday for us, spending most of our working time in the hustle & bustle of London, this was calm, peaceful, relaxing, & the ideal opportunity to unwind & just relax. Saying that our 14 year old son & his friend were never bored throughout the stay, spending most of the holiday either in the lovely pool, or in the barn playing pool & table tennis, or with a football in the extensive grounds the property has to offer.

We are already looking at booking again for next year, as once you find your piece of paradise there is no reason to look elsewhere.

Thanks again to Sarah & Andy who made our holiday the perfect rural retreat for us.

Proud to be able to live in this Cottage

We enjoyed this lovely clean and well presented cottage

Everything you would wish for in a stay in France. Easy accessible from the ferries.

Beautiful restful gardens with a plunge pool (a highlight of the early morning wake up dip)

The restaurants in the village well worth a visit.

We would highly recommend a holiday with Sarah & Andrew.

Lovely property, lovely people. Perfect.

  • 5 of 5

We have had a truly relaxing week and were made to feel most welcome by Sarah and Andy. The cottage was perfect for us and we particularly appreciated the attention to detail throughout and the special touches added to make us feel comfortable and 'at home'. We didn't get a chance to enjoy the fabulous garden and outdoor eating areas so much due to wet November weather but anyone lucky enough to stay here in the more typical Charente sunshine is in for a treat. One bonus of a November stay was being thoroughly spoilt by having a roaring log fire lit for us each evening by Andy, thank you again, what a special treat.

Sarah gave us great recommendations for places to visit locally and the best places to eat or have coffee and pastries. The village is the prettiest around and well worth a visit. I recommend this cottage wholeheartedly and look forward to returning soon.

A lovely, comfortable stay

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here. Sarah and Andy were welcoming on arrival and made sure we were comfortable! Each day, Andy came in to make a fire so that we were warm enough as the sun went down. They were also very helpful in terms of pointing out places to visit and things to do. The kids loved the games in the barn and playing in the garden. Our dog was made to feel very welcome too! It was lovely break!

Location

From the Owner

We bought this lovely property after having lived for many years in another area of France and chose it for its traditional Charentaise style and the truly gorgeous tranquil setting. Only 2 minutes drive or a 15 minute walk down takes you to the picturesque village of Nanteuil en Vallee which has all local amenities, 2 great restaurants and lots of atmosphere. Nanteuil displays a truly picture-postcard ambience and has a 12th century Abbey with a small Art gallery as well as 2 wonderful restaurants one with a Bar and occasional live music outside during the Summer, plus a small traditional local Pizzeria for fabulous take-away Pizza's. Having carefully explored the area for ourselves we found Nanteuil to be one of the most authentic and welcoming French villages in this wonderfully sunny region.

Facilities

From the Owner

The beautiful spacious Gardens and grounds add to the real tranquility of the Cottage. Surrounded by open-fields of sunflowers and hill-top views over open Charente countryside we are lucky enough to occasionally see Deer roaming in the distance or on the many walks just outside our door. The night skies are wonderful as are the spectacular sunsets and our guests have all commented on how well they sleep in the peacefulness of this very special relaxing location. Should you like to learn/improve on your French language skills, have help for the children with French school revision work, or even have an initiation to playing the guitar, piano and music in general, we can offer these events once or twice weekly free of charge when and if you have spare time!
