About the property

House 4 miles South of Monemvasia , 5 Minutes on Foot from the Sea, Tranquil And Set In Open Countryside

Pretty one-storey house on the Southern Peloponnese coast. Low-environmental impact with deliberately minimal use of 20th/21st-century energy supplies in the property. This is very much traditional living: the twentieth-century has only just arrived, let alone the twenty-first which is the why the rental is exceptionally low.

Thank you for your interest in our house. It is situated about four miles outside Monemvasia, a beautiful Byzantine town built on a rock and one of the last unspoilt tourist attractions of Greece. The house itself is situated in open country and about 100 yards from the beach, although the best beaches are a quarter of a mile to either side of the house.

The house sleeps a maximum of 7 people: accommodation comprises of 3 double beds and 1 single bed. The house is simply furnished and cleaned between each let.

There is no electricity in the immediate vicinity of the house and so the cooker, the fridge and the heater are run off calor gas. There is an open fire for the winter months, and electricity and solar lighting have been installed. Water for the shower and lavatory are supplied by an electric pump – but it is important to use the plastic containers provided for fresh drinking water.

The rental of the house is £440.00 per week with lower out-of-season charges. The house has been let for the last 20 years and anyone who has taken it would, I am sure, be very happy to give you a reference should you require it.

Please contact Chante Antarakis (please see below for contact details) prior to your stay. As the house can be tricky to find, you may find it helpful to meet Chante in Monemvasia and then she can guide you to the property by car. Chante will also prepare the house for your arrival and check it is clean after you leave. We would very much appreciate you leaving it as you find it.

There is now a collection point from where the track to the house meets the main road. Black bags can be bought in Monemvasia. Please ensure all rubbish is cleared from the house on departure.

There are daily buses from Athens to Monemvasia via Sparti or Molai. The bus trip is about 5 hours. Buses from Athens to Monemvasia depart from Kifissos KTEL Bus Station. To go to Kifissos KTEL Bus Station, passengers have to take Bus 051 from Omonoia or Bus X93 from the airport of Athens. There are also daily buses from Sparti and Molai to Monemvasia. The bus trip from Sparti to Monemvasia is 1 hour and from Molai to Monemvasia 30 min

Open Monday – Friday, from 8am - 1.30pm.

The National Bank of Greece (next to the Post Office) opens twice a week. Opening times are 9am - 2.00pm. Contact Number: 0030 2732024210

Blankets and pillows are provided, but you should bring your own linen or a sleeping bag, towels, tea towels etc., unless you would like to borrow from the house and pay Chante to do your laundry on your departure at a fixed price of 10 euros per person.

In theory peace and quiet are wonderful, but it is also extremely useful to have a car. Although the local farmers are very generous about lifts, they cannot be relied on, and carrying heavy food and water supplies is not always convenient. There are also some marvellous journeys that can be made in the day, for example:

1. Mistra, the unique Byzantine city which is just outside Sparta and about 60 miles away on a good road.

2. The Dirgos caves, stalactite and stalagmite caves through which one can take boat tours, and which children love. These are beyond Githion which is a very attractive fishing town and a good place for an early lunch.

3. The Mani, the fascinating near-deserted next door 'leg' of Greece written about so well by Patrick Leigh Fermor in his book of that name.

4. Yeraka, and the other mountain and coastal villages to the south of Monemvasia, which can only be reached over rather slow and rough but beautiful mountain roads beyond Aeropolis. The wine in Yeraka is like nectar and is unlike the wine anywhere else.

5. Eleffansos is a delightful small island which can be reached by a glorified rowing boat that travels every half hour from the mainland, where there is also an excellent beach. Travel across the country via Foutia or by the longer but better coast road.

Agios Stefanos Outstanding food - home grown and Greek. Attached is Meliszankia Taverna, a small shop attached where Calor gas cylinders can be changed.

Inside the castle:

Kanoni Good quality Greek

Votsalo Different Greek dishes

Matula Garden restaurant

Xrysovoulo Upscale restaurant

On Bridge Pizzeria

In Monemvasia:

Votsato Traditional Greek dishes

Mamakias Creperie Crepes and fast food

The Trata Seafood

Taxis are available on the harbour at Monemvasia, next to the cigarette kiosk and you can arrange with them to pick you up from Limonas. If you wish, they will take you as far as Athens, which may give you an extra day of holidays in Limonas and although it will cost about £100, but this should be clarified with the taxi service. If the fare is shared between 4-5 people, it is not bad for a distance of 220 miles. The drive will take approximately 4 hours. Tel nos. 61398, 61247, 61127, 61605, 61793.

When leaving the house please inform Chante of your approximate time of departure and ensure that rubbish is cleared and the house left as tidy as possible. Since the lets are normally Saturday to Saturday, your successors will be arriving the same day and it does not leave much time for anyone to tackle a disastrously messy house.

About Harriet Bridgeman

We built the house in Greece around 40 years ago and took our four children there for annual holidays. Now our grandchildren visit and we still enjoy going there too. We hope you will enjoy your time there!

Harriet Bridgeman purchased this cottage in 1970

Why Harriet Bridgeman chose Monemvasía

Testimonies from our Visitor's Book:

As idyllic and rejuvenating as last time. We discovered new pleasures and revisited familiar. MANY thanks to Chante and Theo for all their help. We will return!

Joe, Vicky, Ted, Anna. July, 2017

Limonas has continued to be the amazing place I remembered it to be and I can't think of a better way I could have spent my first few weeks of summer so thank you to everyone in and around Monemvasia who made our holiday so special. I will never forget the wonderful experiences I have had here including watching shooting stars late at night, dancing on the verandah to Joni Mitchell, starlit swims off the causeway between the new and old town, and eating many of the best meals of my life. I hope everyone who stays here has such a lovely, lovely time.

Anna, aged 13

It has been TOO good. It is terribly painful to leave - a real bereavement. The place is woven deeply and tightly into the very strange book I have been writing here.

Charles and Mary Foster. August and September, 2017

Thank you so much. It has been an amazing stay. I recommend the beach down the lane. At night I saw a shooting star. I was paddling in the water when a turtle swam under my feet. I recommend Pipinelli's taverna. He does amazing party tricks such as picking up and holding the table in his teeth. Thank you.

Rachel, aged 9

What makes this cottage unique

We bought a little plot of land in the late 1960s and built a simple house there in the style of the local Greek homes. It has the traditional reed-lined roof and Greek blue shutters at all the windows with mosquito netting built in. The large chimney breast is the main feature in the living area. The large sheltered veranda outside is where most people choose to eat and spend the majority of their time. The area is still underpopulated and many artists and writers have stayed there and have fallen in love with the tranquility and the surrounding wildlife. The most noisy aspect of the area is the cicadas!

The area offers a standard of living which my family really enjoy - locally grown food, cooked to order; wine produced locally from vineyards in the area. You can enjoy peace and quiet for reading, walking, exploring a local butterfly valley, sunbathing, or use the house as a base from which to walk up to the mountains, explore the coast, take boat trips or cycle. There are no other properties like this available to rent in the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The most relaxing and most memorable holiday at Limonas - a happy, happy time - a wonderful limbo between mountains and sea and old friendships renewed. What could be more beautiful or appropriate at this time of change?

Limonas is an absolute tonic!

  • 5 of 5

The property and surrounding area has a very magical charm and warmth about it. The local people were very welcoming and we felt very much at home. Loved the 'off grid' part of solar water heating and lighting. Chante and Theo (the welcoming party) were like old friends and couldn't be more helpful. We always felt as though we were being looked after.

If you want a relaxing holiday and get a flavour of Greek life look no further. Having a car was a must for short excursions and trips into the mountains, but most of the time we were very happy on the local beech and going to local restaurants. Would thoroughly recommend, and can see ourselves going back in the future.

Thanks to the owners for sharing their beautiful property.

Rural idyll

  • 5 of 5

We had a blissful time. Limonas is as characterful as the description implies. Local beaches were gorgeous and there was a wealth of great tavernas. We will return.

In Arcadia

  • 5 of 5

My father, sister and I stayed in this charming, no-frills holiday house, and enjoyed every minute. Its simplicity was endearing and reminded us that life without Wifi is both possible, and enjoyable. Being off-grid really made it a proper break from the frenzy of life back at home. We discovered for ourselves the excellent local wine, the magic of Monemvasia, and the ancient history of the area.

Einfaches Haus, gut ausgestattet, mit schönem Garten und Kamin

  • 4 of 5

Insgesamt empfehlenswert.

Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

This isn't a typical tourist area so no special interest holidays are offered, as far as I know. If you speak Greek, you'll be able to make further enquiries in the area once you're there! Cycling, walking and swimming are all possible.

Limonas is off the coast road south of Monemvasia so the closest beach is about 200m in front of the house, separated from the house by the garden and the road. There are sandy beaches along the coast in either direction from the house - as you drive from Monemvasia, you'll see plenty of spots to visit. The best are about 1/4 of mile on either side of the house.

If you are travelling from the UK, the nearest airports are Kalamata or Athens. The drive from Kalamata to Monemvasia takes 90 minutes; the drive from Athens to Monemvasia is 4-5 hours. However, Kalamata only operates during the summer months (roughly May-September), in which case Athens is the best option from the UK. Taxis to Monemvasia from Athens would cost around €100. Car rental is easiest from Athens: , and compartmentalize. Daily bus from Athens to Monemvasia takes 5-6 hours.

Any taxi from Athens Airport knows where the Bus Station is for buses going to the Peloponnese. There is a boat which leaves Piraeus (accessible by taxi from the airport) at 9am three times a week which takes about 6 hours.

Further Details:

At the foot of the rock of Monemvasia and the old town is the new town and a small port with restaurants, shops and hotels. In Monemvasia, opposite the marina, hire bicycles for €5 per day, adults and children.

Suggested trips:

Mistra, Byzantine city just outside Sparta, 60 miles away

The Dirgos caves, through which one can take boat tours, and which children love. These are beyond Githion, a very attractive fishing town.

The Mani, the fascinating near-deserted next door 'leg' of Greece written about by Patrick Leigh Fermor in his book of that name.

The beautiful port of Yeraka, and the other mountain and coastal villages to the north of Monemvasia. The wine in Yeraka is like nectar.

Eleffansos, a delightful small island which can be reached by a boat; there is also an excellent beach. Travel across the country via Foutia or by the longer but better coast road.

Porto Heli can be visited by boat.
