South Wing is a beautiful listed home in the village of Hunmanby, just two miles from the sea and three miles from Filey on the North Yorkshire coast. A former school, it is equipped with five large bedrooms that can comfortably accommodate 14 people. It has an elegant formal lounge complete with baby grand piano and wood- burning fire and a dramatic oak-panelled dining room. With over an acre and a half of private gardens and woods, it overlooks a 9 hole golf course, tennis courts and a gym, all of which can be used on a pay and play basis. Very convenient for many beautiful beaches, walks and cycle routes along the coast and over the Yorkshire Wolds and a short drive from the North Yorkshire Moors. Historic York is less than an hour away and Hunmanby is well serviced by both bus and train

About andrew wyborn

My family and I bought South Wing in February 2008 to use as a holiday home. We enjoy sharing it with guests and it provides a great base to explore the North Yorkshire coast and countryside. My wife is originally from Scarborough and we are regular visitors to this fantastic part of the country. I have three kids who all love staying at South Wing and regularly invite friends up to join them. They have more space here than at home and lots to do right on the doorstep.

Many of our guests are regular visitors who enjoy the welcoming feel of South Wing and the opportunity to spend time with family and friends in a very comfortable and relaxed setting.

I am obviously a little biased but South Wing is a fantastic place to take a break!

Why andrew wyborn chose North Yorkshire

My wife is originally from Scarborough and we have many friends and family in the area. I can pretty much work from anywhere so we tend to spend a lot of time here in the kids holidays.

As well as local friends, the things that really appeal are the house itself which is a great place to be based - it's big enough to accommodate us all in comfort without tripping over each other.

We spend a lot of time at the beach weather permitting and our kids virtually live in their wetsuits in the summer (the water is cold!). I like cycling and the wolds are perfect for road cycling whilst nearby Dalby Forest is a mountain biker's dream.

There's plenty for everyone and if the weather turns against you its the perfect excuse to stay in the house, crank up the log burner and relax.

What makes this house unique

There's lots of benefits to staying at South Wing. If you like to keep fit there is a 9 hole golf course and 4 tennis courts right outside that are available on a pay and play basis. There is also a very well equipped gym which you can join on a weekly basis.

The village centre is a two minute walk away and is very well serviced with shops, hairdressers, doctors and dentists plus an excellent fish & chip shop and several good pubs.

South Wing is massive, almost 6000 sq ft of space. Despite that it is very comfortable and welcoming and provides plenty of space to be together but also to be apart!

"This was our third visit to South Wing and we are all looking forward to the next! The house has an understated grandeur that lends itself to celebratory meals in the superb oak panelled Dining Room, chilling out in the snug or all getting together around the grand piano in the Drawing Room. Our family group has numbered up to 12 and the house absorbs us easily.

Despite the cold weather the the house was beautifully warm and the wood-burner was a nice focal point. 10 out of 10 in all categories!!!"



"We stayed here for my parent's 40th Wedding anniversary. We couldn't have picked a better place. It is a beautiful house. On our arrival, we spent about an hour wondering, open mouthed around the lovely rooms. The adults had a wonderful time sitting around the log burning stoves sipping wine, whilst the children amused themselves in the gardens or around this huge home"

Notes on accommodation: South Wing is a stunning property. This is our family holiday home and we have equipped it to a high standard. We have been letting to guests since 2008 and have excellent feedback. Many guests make regular repeat visits. The majority of rooms in the house face south over the gardens and a 9 hole golf course. All rooms are very large - the house covers 6000 sq ft, but the feeling is warm and cosy and very welcoming. Log burner in main lounge with a good supply of logs and kindling Outside: Large flat grassed gardens with gravelled surround approx 1.7 acres, Terraced area with bedding plants. Ha Ha at end of garden looking out to 9 hole golf course and 4 tennis courts (which are available on a pay and play basis). South and East facing gardens, a large BBQ and a garden table with 8 seats. External power available. Utility Room: Washing machine and drying machine, ironing board and iron Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are provided, all good quality Egyptian cotton with lovely duvets. South Wing is cleaned ready for each new visit and there is a caretaker nearby to assist with any problems

Such a nice place.....south wing looks very good in the pictures but it's even better when you get to see it.

It's very big but still nice and cosy,plenty to do within walking distance,would love to go back!!!

Excellent property and location for a family stay.

The property is excellent for a large family to make a base to visit the various resorts and places of interest which are all nearby. The accommodation has everything you need and plenty of space for a large family and is excellent for children. The property is central to the village with good shops and pubs.

A happy place.

We were celebrating my wife's birthday by bringing our two daughters and their families together, without the responsibilities of hosting at home. Twelve in all.

The entrance hall confirms that our hopes for the holiday is bang-on.

As my wife and I venture within there was a warm feeling that the whole wing was going to be just perfect. Quirky and idiosyncratic mixed with comfort and style. Small but adequate Kitchen, the luxury of space in the TV room, Dining room, and entertainment room, not to forget the hall for the younger children.

The garden is really great, a good flat lawn for rounders, and a well maintained terraced shrubbery, while away under the trees there is a nature habitat.

We had a great holiday which was well facilitated by the house.

My only regret was we didn't get to play hide and seek of the adults against the children starting in the dining room and disappearing through the special window that secretly opens out at floor level. We did use it for the barBQ. What a place for a murder mystery weekend.

A beautiful property in a great location.

We have just spent a long weekend in this lovely old house. Nine adults and five children aged 8, 2 and three under 2. Although a little chilly when we first arrived the property soon warmed up and for somewhere with such vast rooms was surprisingly cosy. There was room to run around for the little ones without fear of them hurting themselves or damaging anything which was a huge bonus for all of us, and lots of toys and games which were very much appreciated and played with. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and the range oven was perfect for cooking a roast chicken dinner for us all, even having somewhere to warm the plates! The owners very kindly left us a welcome pack of basics such as bacon, bread, milk, butter and wine. The beds were comfortable and had good quality whits bed linen with thick feather duvets. The soft, fluffy white towels and ample bathrooms for everyone were also appreciated. Everywhere was extremely clean. We didn't go out and about much as the weather wasn't brilliant but a trip to Flamborough Head blew the cobwebs away and gave us some dramatic scenery and some sunshine. We will certainly consider using this property again for similar family breaks in the future. The extensive grounds will be ideal for the little ones to play out during the summer and the sun terrace looked very appealing for warm days. Just one little observation, the piano was out of tune but we played it anyway.

Wonderful House

We stayed at South Wing to celebrate a 60th birthday, there were 10 adults in our party. The house is VERY large, but very comfortable and warm.We had an exceptional stay there is plenty of room and VERY clean. Filey is a short drive away and anyone that enjoys afternoon teas I would recommend The Lighthouse. Hunmanby village is a 2minute walk where you can find Pubs, Butchers, Post office, Boots the chemist, Chinese takeaway, tea room and a deli. You can walk to Hunmanby gap which is a very nice walk about 2.5 miles.

It really is a great year-round venue with plenty of room indoors and lots to do in the surrounding area. As you will have seen for stay at home days we have provided Sky HD+ with all sports channels, fast internet access, music stations and lots of games and books for all the family. In the immediate area many of our guests take advantage of the pay and play golf and tennis or simply enjoy the large gardens and woods. Good to hear that you found you way to the beach on foot and hopefully the tide was out when you got there as it opens up a 7 mile sweep of sand stretching from Filey Brig to Reighton Sands.
