Country Cottage near Ourique

Overview

Property

Updated: 10-Dec-2016
Originally a wooden house with lovely country views and a peaceful location

Quince Cottage was originally built as a wooden house for the owners to live in, and has now been refurbished to retain all of it's original charm but with a typically Portuguese exterior and made available for the comfort of guests.

The generous living and dining area have a high wooden ceiling and french doors out on to the terrace both at the front of the house and side main entrance door. The open plan galley kitchen joins on to this room with a dividing bar and is fully equipped with cooker, microwave, coffee machine and dishwasher.

Quince Cottage has 2 ensuite bedrooms (one superking or twin) (one twin or triple). Like the living area, the bedrooms are spacious with high wooden ceilings and have plenty of hanging and shelving space. The mattresses are of top quality and have mattress toppers for even more luxury with ample pillows (extra always available) duvets or flat sheets, throws for extra warmth and cushions for added comfort when sitting in bed reading! The towels provided are luxurious bath sheets, hand towels and face cloths. We also provide shower gel and shampoo in the bathrooms.

Outside and under the cover of the terrace is a dining table and chairs with

a portable BBQ. Sun loungers with cushions are there too so that you can move them around the garden or on the terrace, wherever you prefer to rest and sun or shade bathe.

The large pool is a short walk from the cottage also with sun loungers and shaded seating areas. During the summer season we can offer private use of the pool for self catering holiday makers. This will often apply during other seasons too, but otherwise may just be shared with a couple of riding holiday guests that we could have staying in the main house. We do provide beach towels.

The cottage is easy to get too and we are only 2 kms from the old main road running north to south in Portugal so the access is good and it is easy to pop down to the Algarve for the day or go accross to the West coast or indeed inland to Beja and Evora. There is plenty to do for everyone here.

If you are not into riding horses, then there are miles of tracks for walking (or even running) and we can hire bicycles to you for your stay. The Rio Mira leading to Santa Clara lake is just 3 kms down the road. It is possible to arrange a fishing trip in a small boat there and also there are pedaloes on another nearby lake at Barragem do Rocha.

Surrounded by spring flowers in season and twinkling starlit nights above with no light pollution, this is an ideal place to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. Within walking distance of Castro da Cola with it's historic architectural sites and the small village of Fernao Vaz where the bar is open for a refreshing beer or wine, you will find truly rural sites on your way round. Shepherds tend their flocks, the famous Alentejo black pigs run around in the neighbours fields and the bird life is diverse and plentiful. As this cottage forms part of a larger estate, the horses graze in the nearby fields and are available for riding if you book.

Quince cottage is set in it's own fenced grounds of 2 acres and dogs are permitted by prior arrangement and for a small weekly fee.

About the Owner

Julian Mead & Pru Clayton-Mead with the help of some extremely good staff, run the guest house along with an Equestrian centre, Equus Ourique. Julian is also a yachtmaster instructor and owns Portugal Sail & Power, an RYA school in the Algarve. This obviously keeps them both quite busy! But having run a B&B and wedding venue in the UK before coming to Portugal - then this is just a different life in a warmer country! Pru has always been involved in tourism and ridden horses for pleasure and professionally in the UK. Julian worked in logistics with a sailing boat as his hobby. Now in Portugal they have pooled there resources and are very happy working together and entertaining guests and visitors. They are both British and from East Anglia. They moved to the Algarve from the UK in 2005 and then sold there and bought a beautiful piece of land here in the Alentejo in 2007 whereupon they have built and designed all the infrastructure and buildings.

Ourique Experience

  • 5 of 5

Our two week stay at this cottage was very good. The cottage itself was clean and well equipped for our needs. A little off the beaten track, the peace and quite was just what we wanted and the friendliness of the owner excellent. The swimming pool is a short walk from the cottage and is very enjoyable, clean and bigger than most pools when renting villas.

We are not horsey people but whilst here it seemed a shame to miss the opportunity to have a ride. The team looking after the horses and us on our ride were very friendly and professional.

We would definitely use this property again and recommend it to anyone who like peace and quite. The location allows easy travel to the Algarve and the popular resorts as well as the west coast. The best of both worlds.

Perfect Piece & Quiet

  • 5 of 5

Having now stayed in about 15 such properties across Europe this one is amongst the very best. Great cottage, well laid out, good kitchen and all you need for a relaxing time. The owners pool which we had use of is beautiful (pictures don't do it justice). The location is certainly off the beaten track but easy access to town and everything you need and still quick access to the Algrave. Lastly Pru, Julian & and the rest of the team are very helpful hosts.

Castro da Cola Restaurante

From the Owner

In 2001, while still living in the UK, Julian changed his work life and began a Sailing school out here in Portugal. By 2002 we had bought a Quinta in the Algarve, which needed completely renovating and partly re-building and moved in at the end of 2004. A few years later Pru was back riding having taken an 8 year break and so we started looking for some rural land where we could build an Equestrian Centre. In the spring of 2007 we found this wonderful spot with its rolling countryside, stunning wildflowers and space to breath fresh air. We bought 3 fields in the Alentejo with just fencing round them and began building! Now we have a lovely guest cottage on one plot, an extremely well set-up equestrian centre on the largest central plot, and our own house on the third plot - all adjoining

Coast/Beach:

Algarve coasts (Albufeira) about 45 mins drive. The beaches are generally sandy, with plenty of restaurants and activities. We also have a motor boat in Albufeira for those that want to take a day or half day out on the sea. West coast (Milfontes) about 1 hour drive with a more serene atmosphere, coves and sometimes big Atlantic rollers.

Travel:

Faro airport 1 hour drive. Lisbon airport 2 hours drive. Good roads with little traffic, the Cottage is only 2kms from the old main road Algarve/Lisbon with a well maintained gravel drive from this road to the cottage. Trains from Lisbon or the Algarve arrive at Funcheira 4-6 times daily. Hire car recommended.

Distances:

The small village/hamlet of Fernao Vaz is just at the bottom of the drive within 1 km and has a bar. Ourique is the nearest town with shops, chemist, supermarkets and lots of pretty, viewing points (10km). There are some super restaurants only 2kms away. Despite the Alentejo being a rural area the roads are good and distances not long to Beja, Mertola, Castro Verde, Almodovar all with unique interests.

Further Details:

Castro da Cola is on the Rio Mira and has its own excellent restaurant, archaeological site and church.

Local adegas for wine tasting within 1/2 hour drive.

Facilities

From the Owner

Although this property is in a rural part of the Alentejo, it is conveniently positioned for the main road to Lisbon and the Algarve (but without traffic noise) and for the local shops, bars, restaurants and local attractions. If you or any of your family are horse riders then this is an obvious choice, but if not you can come and relax by the pool and enjoy the peace and quiet of the location. There is plenty to do and see in the local area with the archaeological site of Castro da Cola and its excellent restaurant just down the road. You can visit the bird sanctuary in Castro Verde, or the mining and agriculture museum in Entradas. There are also plenty of adegas in the area for you to sample some of the excellent Alentejo wine. Whatever you choose to do we hope you will enjoy the Alentejo
