About Karl & Coral Shaw

Coral and I have lived full time at Le Pas since 2010 with our 2 daughters, (21 and 17) and Indee our black Lab cross.

We love the laid back way of life in Brittany and the friendliness of everyone we come across here.

Karl & Coral Shaw purchased this farmhouse in 2010

Why Karl & Coral Shaw chose Fougeres area

Both my wife and I like the seasons and although Brittany is always that few degree's warmer than the UK we still have our summers and winters.

Le Pas is ideal for us as access to the UK, should we need to head back, via road, rail, sea or air, but is still very much a rural part of France.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Le Pas is a wonderful location. Ideally situated with lots of interesting places to visit within a short drive. St James offers shopping and restaurants within a 3 minute drive.

The Gite is very well equipped and perfect for a fortnights hoiday. - The duck and dogs added to the charm.

Karl & Coral are perfect hosts - in the back ground and there if needed.

A true rural retreat. Star gazers will love the night sky, simply beautiful.

A great two weeks, thank you!!!

Really nice holiday

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week in August. We found the gite relatively easily after quite a long journey from Calais. Ellie was there to greet us and was friendly and helpful. I think maybe a folder of information and directions to supermarkets/shops/places of interest would be a useful addition as we did feel a little that we were relying on internet searches rather than any local knowledge. We did however manage to find the supermarket, which is great and has everything you need when self catering. We had a really great day out at Mont St Michel, Fougeres, Cancale and Carolles Beach, which were all easy to drive to. We ate some wonderful food, made the most of the price of wine and would recommend La Pas to friends and family looking for a quiet, rural holiday within easy reach of some great places.

Excellent week in Brittany

  • 4 of 5

We had a busy week touring Brittany and nearby Normandy based from Karl & Coral's beautiful gite at Le Pas. The gite itself is close to a village with basic amenities and a short drive away from St James a quaint town with a choice of supermarkets, fuel outlets, etc. It is also very close to good motorway links. The hosts are friendly and discrete with helpful advice if required about the local area.

The gite is well equipped and comfortably furnished in a modern contemporary finish. There's a good amount of storage space and plenty of parking space outside. If the weather is fine you can sit outside and take in the clean, fresh air without being overlooked by neighbours or having to cope with constant passing traffic.

We used the large open grassed area at the side of the gate for a family game of rounders and were greeted by Indie, the hosts very friendly pet labrador,on a few occasions. Also the lovely bottle of red wine awaiting us on our arrival was most welcome.

During our stay we visited Mont Saint Michel, well worth a visit, several of the Normandy D-Day beaches and museums, which gave us a fantastic and moving insight into this mammoth operation and several beautiful towns and villages. The area is very picturesque and well worth a visit.

We would thoroughly recommend Le Pas to anyone wanting a relaxing and comfortable stay in this beautiful area of France.

Many thanks to Karl, Coral, Ellie and of course, Indie.

A Restful, Rural Retreat in Brittany

  • 5 of 5

Le Pas was perfect for us. We wanted a quiet rural week with time for reading, relaxation and resuscitation. We found all of this at Le Pas. The accommodation is stylish yet practical and well equipped. Everything worked as it should do and our hosts were consistently helpful, relaxed and reassuring. The garden is a delight and Le Ferre is deafeningly peaceful - apart from an excitable pair of dogs down the road. St James is beautiful and provides everything you might need to self cater (as well as a range of restaurants, cafes and bars). The American Cemetery is moving and impressive. Le Pas is conveniently located for those who want to explore the towns and resorts of the north of Brittany: Mont St Michel, Dinan and Dinard are all within easy reach. Pontorson and Dol de Bretagne have some lovely bars and restaurants. We really enjoyed our stay at Le Pas and are grateful to Karl, Koral and Ellie for their welcoming and helpful approach. Thank you all.

Very nice peaceful place.

  • 5 of 5

Very comfortable. The owners were extremely helpful with everything including a malfunctioning toilet repaired the next day! Wonderful outside space and comfy beds. Spacious living area with UK telly! Boulongerie down the road and a local town with everything close by. We had a great time exploring Brittany and always looked forward to getting back to La Pas. Highly recommended!!!

The perfect tranquil base from which to explore Brittany.

  • 5 of 5

Le Pas provided us with exactly the serene and peaceful setting we craved for our week’s break in May. Karl and Coral and their family were delightful, helpful, and friendly and respected our privacy at all times.

We took the ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg and the drive down to Le Ferré was leisurely. Le Ferré itself is very very quiet indeed – we only visited it every morning for bread and pastries from the boulangerie. Saint James is considerably larger, with its own impressive Église Saint-Jacques, which is worth a visit. Of the supermarkets, Super U is definitely superior - the fruit and vegetable selection was stunning - the Carrefour, which is rather smaller, we found overpriced in comparison. It may seem obvious, but a car is a must in this area!

Le Pas is a beautifully converted barn and is an ideal base for exploring Brittany: Dinan, Dinard, Saint Malo, Le Mont Saint-Michel and Fougères are all within easy driving distance. Recommended also is the coastal town of Cancale for an oyster and mussels lunch and probably the best ice cream in the world. If you don’t mind the picturesque two-hour drive on Brittany’s immaculate highways, it’s worth visiting the stunning Île de Bréhat and taking the boat tour round this breathtaking archipelago: it’s the sort of place you want to keep secret, but can’t.

Although it was early May, the weather was still favourable enough at Le Pas for us to be able to enjoy the sunshine on the patio in the evenings, admiring the beautifully tended garden, savouring the sound of the breeze in the trees, playing the odd game of pétanque, and sampling the wines of France.

Thank you, Karl and Coral, for a superb holiday!
