House in Shaftesbury, Dorset, England - Peaceful Location In The Rolling Dorset Hills A Mile From The Centre Of Historic Shaftesbury

CHRISTMAS DATES - Contact owner to discuss - Saturday or Monday changeovers can be agreed - Saturday 17th or Monday 19th December - Monday 26th December- Monday 2nd January.

This unique property is located on the outskirts of Shaftesbury in an elevated position which allows for some of the finest views across the rolling countryside. The accommodation is finished to the highest standard offering four bedrooms, an upstairs sitting room and a balcony to take in the breathtaking views and sunsets that are something else! The property has been recently overhauled to reveal the 200 year old stone walls and extended with an oak frame with exposed beams and rooms opened up to the eaves. The modern facilities include a games room with pool table, a darts board and table football and there are 2 sitting rooms with flat screen TVs. The historic hilltop town of Shaftesbury has strong appeal for holidaymakers. It is the home of Gold Hill, the setting for the famous Hovis advertisement with its steep cobbled street lined with picturesque cottages. This is just one example of the charm of Shaftesbury's historically preserved streets and buildings.

Absolutely Fabulous!

A stunning house with a fantastic garden. The house had everything we needed and would have been quite happy to move in permanently.

The garden and trampoline were a more than welcome bonus, if our children had been younger we may never of got them away from it for the day.

In a great spot not being too far from anywhere and with all the lovely restaurants nearby - what more could you want.

Hope to be back soon!

Wonderful holiday location

We had a lovely and truly relaxing week at Foyle Hill Cottage, the location was amazing, as were the views and the garden.

The children had loads of fun on the trampoline, slide, hammock and pool table, and we especially enjoyed the open plan living space and kitchen area. The master bedroom was a real haven, with beautiful beams and views. The en suite waterfall shower was a treat too. The house was very well equipped and decorated, with a comfortable but stylish edge.

Saskia (the owner) was a pleasure to liaise with, and left a very thorough and thoughtful list of local places of interest and eateries, instructions and advice. Along with the Prosecco and fresh flowers, it was an absolute pleasure to stay at this property, and we had one of the best family holidays we have ever had, home or abroad.

Would highly recommend this property, and hope to visit again in the near future. Many thanks to the family for letting us stay in their beautiful house.

Fabulous, would stay here again!

Had a wonderful family holiday here for a week (30th July-6th August 2016).

The Cottage had everything we could possibly need,

Glad we chose this particular property!

Good contact with owner Saskia,too.

We loved the spectacular views and the games room proved popular for us adults and the kids alike!

Nice touch to have a bottle of Prosecco and flowers on arrival,too,much appreciated.

The kids,especially loved the garden,with its quirky style and plenty of hiding places,for a game or 2 of hide and seek.

Would definitively recommend The Cottage and Shaftesbury for a family holiday, and if we were to come this way again,we would not hesitate to stay here again, it would be a pleasure!

Enjoyable family holiday

We spent a very enjoyable week at foyle hill house with all the family. We were all accommodated comfortably in the high specification residence. The downstairs offers a very sociable space which extends outside, weather permitting, of course. Even if the weather isn't on your side, the games room provided our family with hours of entertainment. The additional upstairs lounge offers alternative space for relaxation with amazing views. The pictures and descriptions are accurate. The location was rural but was within easy walking distance of the local amenities in Shaftsbury. The welcome wine and flowers was a lovely touch which enhanced our arrival at this spotlessly, well equipped, family holiday let. The owner put together a very useful handbook for the house and surrounding area with advise and recommendations which we found informative. I would highly recommend this let.

Cottage in Shaftsbury

Stunning views and superb balcony in a lovely quiet setting walking distance from Shafstbury. Lots to see locally including Stonehenge, Salisbury and Bath. Don't forget to walk up 'Gold Hill ' of 'Hovis' fame. Good food at the the local 'Two Brewers'. Excellent bakers and deli in the town!

Perfect holiday

Our big family spent a week in this lovely house last Summer holidays. The house was immaculate when we arrived and the owners had left nice touches such as flowers and a bottle of fizz.

We had great communication with the owner prior to arrival and they really couldn't have done any more for us.

The accommodation was perfect, the garden private and lots of fun for the children, and the view just beautiful.

All mod cons added to the luxury of the house and being on holiday, as well as a fully stocked games cupboard, TVs, pool table, lots of toys and garden games, close to town and local attractions, we really did have an amazing break.

We would love to return.

Activity and Interests


1 hour drive (35 miles) from the coast.

Beaches at Studland, Swanage, Sandbanks, Bournemouth.

Jurassic Coast for cliffs and coastal path.

Open air swimming pool:

5 minute drive. Shaftesbury Oasis Swimming pool on Bell Street. See their Facebook page for opening times.


The nearest train station is Gillingham (Dorset not Kent), 10 minutes away front the property. It is on the London Waterloo (2 hrs) - Exeter St Davids line (1hr 25).

Nearest airports are Bristol, Bournemouth and Southampton. All around an hour to and hour and half away (driving). Ferry ports are at Poole (1 hour) and Portsmouth (1hr 30 mins).

Travel by car from London is 2 hours + via M3 and A303, exiting at the A350 turn off. Travel from the North is probably best via M5 or A34.


Shaftesbury town centre is 1 mile away. A 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive.

Salisbury or Yeovil are a 40 minute drive.

Bournemouth is an hour drive.

Bristol is an hour and a half drive.

Further Details:

In Shaftesbury there are a number of boutique clothes shops, a Deli (Turnbulls), a Butcher and 2 chemists, a good toy shop and a number of other shops. Supermarkets are Tescos and the Co-op. There is a Lloyds, Barclays, Natwest, HSBC and Santander and a library and Post Office in Shaftesbury. There are 3 parks in Shaftesbury with play equipment and one with a skateboard / scooter park.

A number of pubs and cafes are located around the town and a number of other great pubs around the local area. Much of this information will be contained in the welcome pack but if you need any more specific information prior to arrival do contact the owner. Two petrol stations are located at Tescos and a large roundabout of the edge of town.

As for activities and places to visit there are a number of national trust and English heritage properties nearby Stourhead being one of the most impressive. Wardour Castle is 10 minutes drive away. There are also 2 castles at Sherborne.

Moors Valley Country Park is about 50 minutes away from here and is a great place to have a family day out and they do Go Ape there. You just pay for the car park and there's a play trail with different stop off points with climbing structures. You can also hire bikes there.

Higher Green Farm is 10 minutes from the property and they do arts days there which vary from a combination day in which they do a number of different activities or a course in Jewellery making or sculpture amongst other things.

Longleat is good with loads of different attractions for most ages, although expensive.

There are riding stables nearby at Farrington.

Cinemas are at Salisbury, Yeovil and Poole (Tower Park). Swimming pools at the Royal Chase Hotel (small leisure pool) in Shaftesbury, Gillingham and Blandford. Splashdown is at Poole.

The minimal rental period is 7 days (Saturday to Saturday). All rental rates are inclusive of taxes and include bedlinen and towels (and kitchen towels), heating and electricity. A 20% deposit is required at the time of booking and the balance is due in full 8 weeks before arrival.
