About the Owner

We had been looking to buy a property in Portugal for about 4 years, when late one October afternoon in 2010, we drove into Sao Martinho do Porto and saw the sun shining on the beautiful shell-shaped bay and immediately thought "this is the place". We sat and had a beer in a bar overlooking the bay and, once the stunning sunset appeared before our eyes, that was definitely it - we decided to buy a place here straightaway!! It took our breath away!! We signed up for a Penthouse Apartment in a small complex that was under construction, overlooking open countryside, which was completed in 2015 and, having stayed there many times, we are delighted with it. It really is a stunning apartment which we have furnished and equipped to a very high standard. You will love it!!

Beautiful apartment

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the best apartments we have stayed in. Denise and Paul were extremely helpful right from the initial booking. We decided not to hire a car so they put us in touch with a lovely lady called Ana Real who offered airport transfers and also provided a taxi service for us when we visited different resorts and even when we did a big shop at the hyper market - we were so lucky to have been put in touch with her. Denise and Paul met us at the apartment to show us round and give us general information - they provided a super welcome pack that had all the essentials and a couple of bottles of delicious wine! This was very welcome to save us rushing out to the supermarket before it closed. The apartment itself has lovely furnishings, very comfortable beds and a lovely wrap around balcony. There was plenty of kitchen utensils, crockery, glasses etc - everything you could possibly need for self catering. It is obvious that Denise and Paul have put a lot of thought into providing everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable holiday. The pool is fabulous - a bit cold for me as the weather wasn't brilliant so the pool didn't get a chance to warm up but my son spent most of his days in the pool and had a wonderful time. There is also a grassy area where he could kick a ball or play bat and ball, really great for kids.

We would recommend hiring a car as it is a brisk 15 minute walk to the beach and mini market (25 minutes with a child) and the walk isn't a pleasant stroll as you pass an area of empty rundown shack style houses and there are parts of the walk that don't have pavement so not ideal for children and buggies. Sau Martinho do Porto is a pretty bay with big beach where there are cabanas for hire but no sun beds. There is a part of the beach which is quieter near the sand dunes. If you have the option to go out of school holidays then take it as the resort was very busy - as any resort is during peak season.

There are gypsies in the field behind the apartment who appear to be trading horses. Whilst they didn't cause us any problems it did make us more aware of security, we were naturally suprised to see gypsies so close to the apartment and we hope they move on soon and look after their animals.

Anyone who rents this apartment can be sure of comfort and attention to detail which makes this a wonderful apartment to enjoy your holiday.

Owner's Response: David and Sarah, Thank you for your lovely review of your family's holiday experience in our apartment and Sao Martinho do Porto. We are very pleased that you had such a great time and that Ana looked after you so well!! We really appreciate your comments on the attention to detail that went into us providing an apartment that is comfortable and full of everything you need for an enjoyable holiday. The gypsies appear every now and then when there is a horse fair on locally but we have never had any issues with them and they only stay a few days. We hope to see you all again sometime in the future. Paul and Denise

Ultra modern bright spacious apartment

  • 4 of 5

Modern penthouse apartment with balconies on 3 sides. On a small development of 3, 3 story apartment blocks surrounding a large pool. Sea view. Walking distance to Sao Martinho Do Porto and its sandy bay. The best bit was Salir Do Porto (a five minute drive to the left hand end of the bay) with a river, beaches, free car park, swimming pool and cafe. Two coffees (one with milk and one expresso) for 1.30 euros. How cheap is that !

Apartment was well equipped with a very good internet connection (able to get live english tv via Filmonlive tv with no buffering. Owners very welcoming and helpful. Essentials to eat and drink supplied so no need to shop on arrival. Other residents very friendly and keen to point out things to do and places to visit.

Lovely apartment and gorgeous village

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time in Paul and Denise's beautiful apartment. After a lovely warm welcome, we settled into their fabulous accommodation, enjoying the spacious lounge, amazing balcony and lovely pool. Everything was clean and in working order, and we had everything we needed for our holiday home.

We loved the village of San Martinho, which had fabulous restaurants for both lunch and dinner, and a lovely atmosphere, particularly in the evening whilst walking along the prom. The kids (despite 2 of them now being teenagers!) also loved the huge float in the sea, and we all adored the bay.

We also loved Nazare. Despite being regular visitors to the Silver Coast, we hadn't come across either San Martinho or Nazare before, and fell in love with both of them. The sea was amazing fun in Nazare, albeit a little scary at times! We'll definitely be back!

Thank you Paul and Denise for the fabulous apartment - we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others.

Great but beware!

  • 4 of 5

Really nice property, every bit as good as the pictures. Great welcome from Paul and Denise. Good location, 6 great nights out of 7. On the last night new neighbours were moving in and rang the apartment door bell at least 10 times up to 12.30 at night - accidentally but very annoying. Only word of warning is we left the appartment in a really tidy state, stripped beds etc but were later told by Paul there were stains on the double duvet cover, the single bed douvet cover and towels that would not come out and the replacement cost was over the £250 security deposite. My wife and I did not notice any stains at all on the bedding or towels and dispute there were any, but we accept the towls were grubby after a week's use as you would expect. We stay in apartments or villas 4/5 times a year and in over 20 years have never had a issue such as this. To protect yourself I'd suggest you photograph everything as you leave to ensure you have some comeback if this situation ever happens to you!..So stay here for a great appartment in a good location, disconnect the door bell and be prepared to lose your security deposit. Ask yourself if you would pay £250 more than the rental price and if the answer is yes then stay here by all means. The appartment and location are great and you'll have a fantastic holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay in our apartment and the surrounding area. It is unfortunate that the new neighbours chose to move in at night. We met them on the morning you left and they did not mention any disturbance and indeed we have never heard of this happening before. We can only apologise on their behalf. We are also very sad that we had to replace the bed linen and towels which were stained to the extent that even after at least six washes, and the use of commercial stain removers, we felt that they were not of the extreme high standard of cleanliness we expect to offer our guests. We strive to maintain the very highest standards and Egyptian cotton bed linen and towels are expensive to replace. We did send you photographs of the damage and are satisfied that we provide the absolute best in quality and the highest standards of cleanliness which we refuse to compromise on.

A Very Lovely Part of Portugal

  • 5 of 5

We holiday/travel regularly with our three boys and as a family of five it takes a lot to please us all! We spent 11 nights at Denise & Paul's beautiful apartment (I particularly like apartments with flexible booking) and happily I can report that everyone was extremely satisfied. The apartment is huge, very well equipped and tastefully furnished. The balcony and swimming pool both lovely. We hired a car and explored the area during our stay visiting Nazare, Peniche, Obidos, Alcobaca and Sao Pedro do Moel etc. but always glad to come back to Sao Martinho do Porto with its lovely friendly atmosphere. The children also loved the beautiful beach at Foz do Arehlo and the sand dunes at Salir do Porto. There is a large supermarket within a few minutes drive and restaurants, bakeries and ice cream shops a plenty in the centre of town. A great holiday in a lovely part of Portugal.

From start to finish this apartment and the owners delivered . The accommodation is spotless and pictures are spot on, we really liked the added benefit ,not listed , of the electric shutters , total darkness until you decided to get up. Lovely area, lots to do and not burning hot so perfect for the children . Paul and Denise treat you like friends coming to stay . The balcony is also a dream. So good is this apartment we have not been able to book for this year in the summer . A real gem .
