About the property

Spacious 1 bedroom cottage with mezzanine, up to 4, with exclusive benefit of 5.5 hectares of meadows and water.

Overlooked by an old and typical village of Burgundy, Rix mill offers, for your exclusive benefit, the luxury of 5.5 hectares of meadows and water inviting to wander around, daydream or observe and contemplate the rich nature and wildlife widely present.

A self-contained holiday cottage has been equipped, combining the beautiful architecture of the era (built in 1743 before the French Revolution) and the comfort and nice decor one's want to find when on holiday. Spacious and bright, the accommodation receives the outdoor light through large windows offering an open view on the mill stream, the village and the river. The main room includes a fitted kitchen and a dining space, a living space (3-seat sofa - which is an extra high-comfort double bed - , television, internet wiring, WiFi and a large range of English and French books). An under floor heating system and a charming wood stove guaranty a great comfort, even in winter. The bathroom is equipped with a walk-in shower. The double-bed bedroom is installed on the mezzanine overlooking the main room.

Situated in the heart of Burgundy region, within the "Chablis, Sancerre, Beaune vineyards triangle", Rix Mill is part of the 200 inhabitants Rix village, just 3 kms from the medieval town of Clamecy (5000 inhabitants), where all amenities and shops are available, and 2 hours drive South from Paris. With a rich history, Burgundy offers a wide variety of tourist attractions and places to visit easily reachable by car from the mill: Vezelay (designated Unesco World Heritage site), Guedelon castle (one-of-a-kind project in the whole world ), Fontenay abbaye, Semur en Auxois, Auxerre, the Morvan massif and its lakes, the "canal du Nivernais", Autun, Bibracte, Alesia...

As an alternative to the car, the surrounding countryside will also invite you to walks, bike rides and boating. Two bicycles (more can be hired in town) are at your disposal on site. Use of an inflatable boat, swimming or fishing are all means of enjoying the 1 km of river. Pétanque, badminton and table tennis can also be practiced onsite and, activities as yoga, climbing and micro lighting are available all year round at very short distance.

Your hosts, Yves and Christine, have spent many years as expats in Switzerland and the UK and are bilingual French-English. Their primary wish is to make your stay thoroughly enjoyable, your mood and your pace will be their only guides in advising you, accompanying you or leaving you alone when it is your choice. They are living in the mill main house. On your arrival they will welcome you with an "aperitif bourguignon". They will then keep a discreet distance to preserve your tranquility. If you are staying for the week, if it suits you, they will invite you to a convivial welcome dinner to have the time to share and exchange more. Sharing another meal later during your stay will always be possible at extra fee.

If you like to improve your skills or those of your relatives in French language you can also ask for Christine's assistance, please get in touch for a specific quotation.

Rix mill is reachable either by car, train or private plane as there is a public airfield in Rix with a parking space for your plane in a private hangar.

If you prefer not to pay any deposit and additional service fees and book directly with us, it is possible, you have just to contact us through our website rix-mill-burgundy.com. In this case our clients usually pay on their arrival either by cash or by Bank transfer, and an invoice is then delivered.

Christine Mercier purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Christine Mercier chose Rix

After 21 years expatriation (4 years in Switzerland and 17 years in England), we returned to France and fell in love with Rix Mill. Untouched and uninhabited for some 25 years prior to our purchase, we have enjoyed the combined challenge of restoring what is an historical Mill, pre-dating the French revolution, and introducing a high specification interior with 21st century comfort and the latest in modern communications technology.

This type of site is rare as it combines features that you don't usually find together. The mill is in Rix village, therefore not isolated, while nature and wildlife are at its doorstep. It benefits from sun all day long and offers view on the valley and its wide spaces. Its location makes a lot of interesting towns, including Paris, quickly reachable by car

What makes this cottage unique

Exclusivity, serenity, conviviality, a unique site and the perfect place to unwind, think, create and discover Burgundy...

Wonderful place to relax and unwind!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful find this is! Christine and Yves welcomed us with a fantastic dinner and we found peace and tranquillity in their lovely property. We stayed in the cottage and had our own private and peaceful space to relax and unwind, the location is absolutely stunning. Just sitting by the river or wandering along the banks watching the wildlife was amazing. It is also a great location to explore the beautiful Burgundy countryside especially getting some great ideas from our lovely hosts! Will certainly make an effort to return.

Owner's Response: We wish any gite owner to get the opportunity to host guests as Julie and Chris. Their kindness, their refreshing joie de vivre, their curiosity and enthusisam about the mill and its surrounding, their generosity in sharing products from their own region and a delicious meal they cooked for us are the exact reasons why we enjoy running a gite and welcoming people from all around the world. And what a nice feeling to find the place in such a good state after their visit! We certainly would be very pleased to have another opportunity to host Julie and Chris.
