'Tara' is a detached chalet-style house situated in the hills above Steephill Road, Ventnor. There is a sunny, landscaped back garden, with a raised patio, grass border and lawned side area with sea views. To the front are glorious sea views from the upstairs master bedroom and the lounge downstairs. Steephill Cove, a picturesque and safe beach, and Ventnor Botanic Gardens are a short walk away. Tara is a real home-from-home which we refurbished, modernised and redecorated in 2008 and have kept it in very good order eversince. It is furnished throughout with good quality, modern furniture and fittings. About the Owner

We live on the English mainland with our 3 sons and have had regular holidays in the Isle of Wight every year since our first son was born (he's now 22!). In fact we have been enjoying holidays every year on the island since we were children ourselves with our own parents and families, many years before we met and got married - since the 1960s in fact! We love the Isle of Wight so much that whatever other holidays we have, we always make sure we spend at least one week on the island each summer and visit whenever we can during the rest of the year. Steephill Cove has always been our family's favourite place and we spend most of our time there - we love its relaxed atmosphere, the seclusion and that it has remained non-commercialised.

Tara - Frankly my dear, it was excellent!

We have just spent a week at Tara, a lovely contemporary property set in a quiet edge of Ventnor. It has all the practicality of purpose-built holiday accommodation, but with the charm and cosiness of the owners' home-from-home. Well outfitted and spacious it also has many nice touches in terms of ornaments and pictures which give it character but not clutter. Everything is light and airy and the large front windows have views out over the rooftops to the sea.

Our visit had very mixed weather, and it was great to be able to pull the curtains and pop the heating on to shut out torrential rain one day, then open up the big windows and have lunch on the patio in the sun the next.

Tara is managed by the owners, and they were very responsive and helpful before, during and after our stay. There was also a wealth of information on site about the house, equipment, local places of interest, etc which we found very useful. The wireless broadband (essential these days) worked well and the Sky ‘everything’ package was a bonus. It is worth noting, though, that mobile phone coverage is patchy around this part of the island.

Ventnor has a lot to offer - coffee at The Royal Hotel, the 'fish three ways' meal at Foggs, lovely walks along the coastal paths and fish & chips from The Chippy were all highlights, as was a visit to the Heritage Museum for local history.

We had a great time here, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a base for exploring the island. Tara offers a homely coastal retreat from mainland hubbub without losing key practical comforts such as Internet access and a dishwasher.

We've always loved the Isle of Wight and finally managed to buy a property of our own, Tara, in 2007 with a view to moving there one day! With this in mind, we've made sure Tara is much more than a holiday rental property; we've used all our experience gained over many years of staying on the island to make it our second home. If were able to, we would certainly spend most of our time there. One important factor in deciding to buy a property on the island was to make sure it was within our 'golden' location near to Steephill Cove. When we came across Tara we immediately fell in love its location and the spectacular sea views! It's a 20 minute, beautiful coastal walk into Ventnor, and there are unlimited walks and cycle routes on the island, but nothing is very far by car!

Beaches: Steephill Cove, access by slope or steps, secluded, safe and sandy with cafes, 10-15 min walk, 2 min drive with parking at Ventnor Botanic gardens; Ventnor, a mixture of sand and shingle with tearooms and pubs along esplanade including Spyglass Inn, 20 min coastal walk or through town; Shanklin (20 min drive) and Sandown (30 min drive) are long, sandy with calm seas, cafes, tearooms, pubs and amusements; Compton Bay unspoilt, good for surfing and Brooke, hunt for fossils, 25 min drive.


Ferries and crossing times - Wightlink: Portsmouth–Fishbourne 35 minutes or Lymington-Yarmouth 40 minutes; Red Funnel: Southampton-East Cowes 1 hour. Wightlink Fast Catamaran Portsmouth–Ryde 22 minutes; Red Funnel Red Jet Hi-Speed service Southampton–West Cowes 25 minutes. Southampton airport approx 15 minutes from Red Funnel ferry terminal. Heathrow and Gatwick airports approx 1 hour 15 minutes from Wightlink ferry terminal in Portsmouth and Red Funnel ferry terminal in Southampton.

By car in minutes: Ventnor town 5 (20 minute walk); Shanklin Old Village 15; Blackgang Chine (theme park) 15; Robin Hill Adventure Park 30; Carisbrooke Castle 30; Cowes marina 40; Osbourne House 40; Newport (the Island's capital, shopping and cinema) 30; The Needles Park, Alum Bay (coloured sands) 45; Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Havenstreet 35; Amazon World Zoo Park 20; Seaview Wildlife Encounter 30; Dinosaur Isle, Sandown 25.

Further Details:

Ventnor has a number of 'knick-knack' and speciality shops e.g. books, antiques, bespoke jewellery, vintage fashion, as well as a supermarket (Co-Op) and grocery shop (Londis). There are many lovely cafes, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants in the town and along the esplanade serving food such as locally caught seafood, steaks and traditional English dishes, as well as European and International cuisine e.g. Spanish and Italian. Takeaways in Ventnor include fish and chips, Chinese, Indian and kebabs. For fine dining there are the Hambrough and Royal Hotels or the Hillside restaurant. Ventnor has 2 banks (HSBC and Natwest), 2 chemists with pharmacies, plus a doctors surgery.

Eating places on Steephill Cove: The Beachshack www.thebeachshack-ventnor.co.uk (enjoy a drink or light meal whilst looking out at the incredible view of the English Channel from their terrace), The Crab Shed (light meals and refreshments), and The Boathouse (small seafood restaurant open at lunchtimes).

Each year Ventnor hosts: The Fringe Festival "A unique blend between a metropolitan arts festival and the traditional field music festival that the Island is famous for" which always coincides with the Ventnor Carnival; the Isle of Arts Festival. Ventnor Botanic Gardens is set in 22 acres with plants, trees and shrubs including rare and exotic species and has a cafe and gift shop, a cafe/restaurant plus a Visitor Centre. They also hold many events, exhibitions and workshops.

Walking and cycling, hugely popular with many routes to choose from such as walking on nearby Boniface Downs, the top of which is the highest point on the island. Cycle hire is available in Ventnor.

Water-sports, a lot to choose from eg kayaking and body boarding - NEW FOR HIRE ON STEEPHILL COVE 2013 - surfing (Compton Bay and Sandown), sailing with the famous Cowes week every August and there's a small 'drying' harbour in Ventnor where yachts can make short stays. Fishing and angling is also popular.

From the Owner

We have completely refurbished inside and outside to make sure everything is as we would want it to be if we were living there all the time. That means that unlike many other holiday properties we have a full Sky package in the Lounge and in the main bedroom and also full unlimited WiFi broadband. Unlike many other Isle of Wight properties that we have stayed in over the years we have a full central heating throughout since Tara is a perfect place to stay during the winter as well. We completely landscaped the back garden in 2012 and we love relaxing there and hopefully having quite a few barbeques!

  • PLEASE NOTE: Strictly no pets & no smoking. Children welcome. A travel cot is provided but please bring bedding for this. There is no child safety gate on the stairs. Rear garden is gated but children should be supervised at all times as there are steps leading up to the patio and a steep tree-covered slope behind. OUTSIDE - REAR GARDEN: landscaped raised patio with grass border, lawned area to side with sea views, area for patio furniture with sea views, lawned side area ideal for relaxing on sun loungers.
