Fabulous holiday

  • 4 of 5

Castaways is in an ideal location for a fabulous family beach holiday.

The house is well presented with a perfect location 75 yards from the beach.Plenty of parking & the blue bar is an excellent watering hole.

The house maybe a bit of a tight squeeze if you are all adults then again when the weather's so wonderful the sleeping arrangements don't really matter

Fantastic family beach holiday location

  • 5 of 5

This cottage has everything you need for a great family holiday. The village feels very secure, so we happily let our older child explore on his own. The play park opposite the cottage (with pub next door as vantage point) was perfect for the younger ones. The cottage itself again feels secure, is clean and bright and situated brilliantly close to the beautiful beach. Highly recommend.

Porthtowan Has a Blue Flag beach. The surfing is excellent with both right and left beach breaks. Porthtowan is one of the country’s foremost surfing locations and hosts the annual “SAS Cornish & Open” surf championship. Surf boards can be hired in the village and a highly regarded surf school operates from the beach during the summer. Dolphins, seals and the occasional basking shark all come close to the shore and can sometimes be seen from both the beach and cliffs. The sandy beach has rockpools, caves and coves to explore.

Coast/Beach:

Just 70 metres from the wonderful beach; which is one of only 5 Blue flag beaches in Cornwall.

At high tide the beach is a large sandy cove and at low tide it is long and sandy, stretching for nearly a mile from Lushington Cove to Chapel Porth. It is ideal for family beach holidays offering sand, rock pools and safe bathing; with the RNLI providing a Lifeguard service from the 1st May until the 30th September.

Travel:

Newquay Airport - 20 miles (regular flights from across the UK)

Redruth Train Station - 4 miles

Distances:

Porthtowan’s central location and easy access to the A30 means that it is ideal for touring Cornwall. The village has a good range of shops and services. St Agnes is the nearest town approximately 4 miles to the north. Truro is approximately 9 miles inland.

Further Details:

Castaways lies within Cornwall’s World Heritage Site, is surrounded by land owned by the National Trust and is just yards from one of the UK’s finest surfing beaches. The small un-commercialised village has a lovely children’s play area, village shop, surf shop, post office, pub, coffee shop, fish & chip shop, ice cream parlour and the acclaimed Blue Bar. The Blue Bar, described by The Daily Telegraph as “Cornwall’s coolest bar” and by The Observer as “an awesome spot for a beer and bite to eat”, is worthy of special mention as it is child friendly, serves excellent food and welcomes families, surfers, walkers and dogs.

BEACH & SURF

At high tide the beach is a large sandy cove and at low tide it is long and sandy, stretching for nearly a mile from Lushington Cove to Chapel Porth. It is ideal for family beach holidays offering sand, rock pools and safe bathing, with the RNLI providing a Lifeguard service from the 1st May until the 30th September.

The beach also boasts a tidal pool which featured in the television programme "Robson Green's Wild Swimming Adventure": after swimming in the pool he described the beach and pool as "paradise".

WALKING

Much of the land surrounding Porthtowan is owned by the National Trust and the South West Way Coastal Path passes through the village. The cliff walks allow panoramic views to St Ives Bay in the south and St Agnes Head in the north. The surrounding cliff paths are some of the best in Cornwall, leading to Portreath to the south, and to Chapel Porth and St Agnes to the north. Chapel Porth can be reached by both the beach (tide conditions permitting) and the cliff path, and has a delightful National Trust café in the cove which is open for much of the year.

Porthtowan and the surrounding area are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The iconic Wheal Coates tin mine buildings are located on the coast path to the north of the village.
