Gite in Beaumarches, near Marciac, Midi-Pyrenees, France - Country Holiday Property In Beautiful Farming Location

A Bertin is a traditional 200 year old Gascon Stone Farmhouse. Within the house is a two bedroom ground floor gite with its own entrances on the south and north sides of the house and private terraces overlooking the garden and pool. Set in gardens and 20 acres of meadows, guests are welcome to make themselves comfortable anywhere in the garden and by the pool and walk through the fields. The owners, Richard and Fran Nustedt, live in the main house and are available for as much or as little contact as you want.

The property is on a no-through lane with superb views over the surrounding fields and hills, undisturbed by the sound of traffic but only a ten minute drive to the nearby medieval towns of Marciac and Plaisance. Our gite is the only holiday accommodation on or near the property. Feel completely at home here in your own little corner of Gascony, with the well-known Bastides and Castlenau Route only one mile away which will lead you through the beautiful medieval towns and villages of this area of south West France.

The Gers is generally considered to be the very centre of Gascony; almost like a national park, there are no airports, heavy industry or large cities here - and virtually no public transport either, so come with a car! The night skies are exceptionally clear and the air incredibly clean - expect to sleep well!

About the Owner

We are Richard and Fran and have lived here in the Gers for over twelve years. We raised our family in North Devon and then, when they flew the nest, came to make our home here in the beautiful - and warm - countryside of South West France.

With help, we transformed our Gascon Farmhouse to incorporate a ground floor apartment where we welcome visitors throughout the year. We keep ourselves relatively busy by looking after second homes for a number of English owners but always find plenty of time to relax and enjoy our own home which is quietly situated in a beautiful part of the Gers.

Wonderful family holiday peaceful and relaxing

We have recently returned from A Bertin having spent 2 weeks there on our family summer holiday. The views were absolutely fantastic overlooking the French countryside and the setting is peaceful and tranquil.

Richard, Fran and their dog Prim made us feel very welcome and all were very tolerant of our 7 month old mad spaniel who was with us as well.

We had great fun visiting the local markets which were always an adventure. We drove into the Pyrenees and managed two visits into Spain as it is so close. The local restaurants in Marciac were also very good to eat in. Fran and Richard were really helpful on things to do and local history and information. Fran also let our daughter ride out on her horse (under her supervision) a couple of times which she loved.

The accommodation was clean, well presented and was certainly ample for what we needed for our stay.

If you are looking for somwhere quiet and relaxing with a chance to explore some beautiful French countryside then look no further than staying at A Bertin.

Peace & Tranquility

We stayed for a full month at A Bertin, a decision that we were not to regret. Our Border Collie was with us and he settled well into his new temporary home. The owners made us most welcome and Fran even treated me to a ride on one of her horses, Cyrrhus. On our arrival we found basic food items in the fridge and a bottle of wine on the table. Fran had made a lovely multi-ceral loaf for us. The owners have a delightful pointer dog, Prim, and she quickly made friends with us and our pooch. The house is in a very rural area that is undeveloped. This means the air is clean as there is no industrial manufacturing as such. The dominant industry is farming. There are literally tens of little bastide towns and villages to visit, very picturesque and historic. This is d'Artagnan country and the town of Condom has an excellent statue of the Three Musketeers plus d'Artagnan in the main square. Lourdes is not too far and a tour of the Pyrenees in this area proved spectacular. Biarritz and Bayonne are within a couple of hours as is Toulouse. Armagnanc is produced here along with foie gras.

The accommodation at A Bertin is uncomplicated but clean and comfortable and more than met our requirements. As for the setting, it is serene, quiet and very beautiful. The swimming pool overlooks the countryside although this time of year, October, it was too cold for us to use. There was ample parking for our car plus trailer, a major bonus, as my husband transports his precious motorbike wherever he goes on the continent.

We found the local people to be friendly and helpful, something we appreciated as we needed both a dentist and a doctor for minor problems. Fran was extremely helpful and is a mine of information on the locality.

For those who like a peaceful holiday, in a beautiful rural location with lots of interesting places to visit, A Bertin meets these criteria. As for the owners, they proved friendly and helpful and as a result, we hope to visit again within the next year. What more can I say? !!!

Having lived for a long time in some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, it wasn't surprising that we chose to move to this area of France. It is a thriving farming area, sitting on rich clay soil with soft rolling hills, cattle, sunflowers, and small patches of woodland. A mecca for wildlife. This is the heart of the ancient province of Gascony - still totally unspoilt and with new building only allowed if it is within a village and fits in with the existing vernacular - terracotta roofs over ochre-coloured walls. Quiet and well away from tourist honeypots, yet accessible to the mountains of the Pyrenees and the beaches on the Atlantic ocean.

We have a delightful elderly horse in our fields and if you have a pony-mad child who would like a quiet hack out, Fran, who is a qualified Riding Instructor, would be delighted to take them out. Please mention this when enquiring. Thank you.


It takes two hours to get to Biarritz/St Jean de Luz/Hossegor on the Atlantic coast. There is very little driving through towns on this route so although it's two hours, it makes for a pleasant day out.


Airports most convenient are Toulouse (1hr 45mins), Lourdes (1 hr), Bordeaux or Biarritz(2 hrs) and Pau (1hr 15mins). Car hire is essential. Driving time from St Malo is 7 hours, plus stops.


Marciac and Plaisance du Gers are small Bastide towns, both only 10 minutes drive from the house The Gers is a rural department full of small medieval villages with inexpensive and friendly restaurants serving duck in all its forms!

Further Details:

We are about one hour from the Pyrenees foothills. One and a half hours from the ski station of La Mongie where you can take the tele-cabin to the top of the Pic du Midi at any time of year and look down from the mountain tops! Local supermarkets are ten minutes from the house.

  • Notes on accommodation: The apartment is on the ground floor of a private stone farmhouse, in which live the owners of the property. There is no other holiday accommodation on the property and very little sign of it in the area. The apartment has two doors - the south doors lead onto a private terrace overlooking the garden and pool. On the other side of the courtyard are stables for the two horses who stay in during the hot summer days. The north door leads from the twin room onto a small very private sitting out space. The swimming pool is for guests exclusive use. Although elderly now, one of the horses is available for short rides and if anyone would like to ride out, beginner or experienced, please mention this when booking. There is no charge and Fran is an experienced Riding Instructor so beginner children are safe! Babysitting is also available. Outside: The gardens look out onto a glorious valley and are fully available to guests. The pool is approx 10 x 5, has wide Roman steps, and is shallow enough for games but deep enough for swimming. A barbecue is available with charcoal. There are four sunbeds and ball games, plus table and chairs on the terrace for 6. Utility Room: Washing machine, dish washer and chest freezer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels are provided for bathroom and pool. The beds will be made up for your arrival. Towels and bedlinen are changed weekly. The cleaning at the end of your stay is included in the price. No damage deposit is required.
